  • Patent number: 7590310
Abstract: The present invention is an automated and extensible system for the analysis and retrieval of images based on region-of-interest (ROI) analysis of one or more true objects depicted by an image. The system uses a Regions Of Interest (ROI) database that is a relational or analytical database containing searchable vectors that represent the images stored in a repository. Entries in the ROI database are created by an image locator and ROI classifier that work in tandem to locate images within the repository and extract the relevant information that will be stored in the ROI database. Unlike existing region-of-interest search systems, the ROI classifier analyzes objects in an image to arrive at the actual features of the true object, instead of merely describing the features of the image of that object. Graphical searches are performed by the collaborative workings of an image retrieval module, an image search requestor and an ROI query module.

  • Patent number: 7584653
Abstract: Dynamic nanomechanical analysis of a sample is performed by using a cantilever probe that interacts with the sample using a force applied across a wide range of frequencies that includes frequencies greater than 300 Hz. The motion of the cantilever probe is detected in response to the applied force over the range of frequencies and analyzed over at least a portion of the wide range of frequencies to determine a mechanical response of the sample, preferably including quality factor and modulus of the sample. The analysis of the motion of the cantilever probe is preferably performed in terms of amplitude, phase, and frequency of both the probe and the sample and preferably, where the applied force is analyzed to determine both a real and an imaginary modulus of a mechanical response of the sample. Preferably, the force is applied so as to produce a minimum of phase and amplitude response variation in the absence of the sample.

  • Patent number: 7581292
Abstract: A clip having structure for detachably interlocking with another clip having substantially equivalent structure. The clip of this invention can be used to secure items, such as gloves, to garments being worn by a user. The instant clips may be made from a resilient material and include a base structure defining an aperture and a gap, which enable the detachable interlinking. One of the clips includes generally opposed arms in mechanical communication with jaw members biased in a contacting relation. The jaw members are forced apart by the user applying opposing forces to each of the arms. The jaw members operably grasp the article when the arms are released.

  • Patent number: 7583387
Abstract: An instrument for studying an object (12) comprising a movable interferometer having a laser source and a plurality of detectors (24) arranged in an array. The laser source is expanded and arranged to direct a converging object beam (21) towards a point (22) or line beyond the object (12) whereby a speckle pattern of light reflected from the object (12) is detected by the detector or detector array (24). The point (12) or line at which the laser source is arranged to converge the object beam (21) is approximately the same distance beyond the object (12) as the object is spaced from the source. The speed of movement of the instrument, the sampling rate of the detectors (24) and size of the area (23) of the object illuminated by the converging laser object beam (21) are arranged so that sequential areas (23) of the object (12) studied overlap.

  • Patent number: 7580495
Abstract: A phase control circuit includes a signal generator sub-circuit that generates a set of phase reference signals having phase angles generally distributed over a phase angle adjustment range. A controller sub-circuit produces weighting signals that assign relative priority for each of the phase reference signals, and includes at least one incremental adjustment input. The controller sub-circuit is adapted to maintain the weighting signals in a generally steady state when receiving signaling on the adjustment input that represents no adjustment, and to adjust relative intensities of the weighting signals based on stimulation of the adjustment input. The phase control circuit further includes a mixer sub-circuit that is coupled to the set of phase reference signals and to weighting signals that collectively control a mix of the phase reference signals. The mixer sub-circuit is adapted to produce an output signal having a phase angle that is based on the mix of the phase reference signals.

  • Patent number: 7578199
Abstract: The load on an aircraft component, such as the load on a landing gear leg during braking, is measured with a contactless, all-weather displacement measuring system. The system includes a control unit a controllable microwave emitter of electromagnetic radiation and a microwave detector comprising a plurality of antennae. When the aircraft component is subjected to a load relative movement of the emitter and detector is caused. The detector generates in response to microwave radiation received from the focused beam of radiation emitted by the emitter a signal that is received by a signal processor of the control unit. The signal received by the control unit depends on the relative positions of the emitter and detector. The control unit is arranged to provide an output signal representative of the load sustained by the aircraft component. The system may be used to control braking in dependence on the output signal so as to maximize braking efficiency without overloading the landing gear leg.
