  • Patent number: 6617079
Abstract: A process and system are provide for determining the acceptability of a fluid dispense such as a discrete volume of fluid used to coat a substrate. The fluid dispense is exposed to an energy source and the energy transmitted by the fluid dispense is detected to determine the shape of the fluid dispense. The fluid dispense shape and the timing of the beginning and end of the dispense are compared to previously generated standard dispense profiles and used to determine the acceptability of the shape and/or timing of the fluid dispense. The output from the sensor is used to control further processing of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6596148
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for selectively removing one or more organic and also preferably one or more inorganic contaminants from plating baths. More particularly, the invented method relates to the use of a source of energy in combination with chemical oxidants, alone or in conjunction with a catalyst to oxidize organic contaminants in the plating bath to a level such that the electroplating bath can be recovered and reused after appropriate chemical adjustment. The oxidative treatment method may be a continuous process or a batch process that is performed in a single pass and the endpoint of the oxidative process detected by a sensor. Residual organics, if desired, and chloride ions in the bath are removed from the solution by a chemisorption or physisorption treatment.

  • Patent number: 6596145
Abstract: An electrodeionization (EDI) module is formed from an anode spaced apart from a cathode, one or more waste channels formed between the electrodes and a product channel located inward of the waste channel(s). Ion permeable membranes form the boundary between the product channel and the waste channel(s). The product channel and waste channels are filled with a mixture of anionic and cationic ion exchange materials. At least the waste channel(s) and preferably the product channel as well, use either an anion bead having a relatively low affinity for the selected anion specie(s) to be retained (e.g. Type II) or it is a blend with Type I materials. Preferably, the membranes contain an ion exchange material to speed the transfer of ions across them. More preferably, the anionic membrane contains anion materials that have a relatively low affinity for the selected specie or species for retention.

  • Patent number: 6588377
Abstract: A process and apparatus are provided for conserving water and heat energy in a hot water supply system. A holding tank is provided near the Point Of Use to capture unwanted cooled water. An integrated displacement actuator allows this volume to be recirculated back into the hot water supply line after use. The actuator consists of a flexible bladder or rolling diaphragm that divides the holding tank into two compartments; one for non-compressible supply water, and the second for a compressible phase change fluid. At ambient temperature, the phase change fluid condenses to a liquid phase at a relatively low pressure, allowing diverted water to flow into the tank from the hot water supply system. When the phase change fluid is warmed by the adjacent hot water, it changes to a gaseous phase, pressurizing the holding tank and allowing re-injection of the cool water into the hot water supply system. A control system is provided direct water flow based on time, temperature and pressure.

  • Patent number: 6524513
Abstract: A filtration apparatus is provided which is formed from multilayer presealed elements and monolayer elements that are insert molded together. The device is provided with a feed port, a filtrate port and, optionally, a retentate port. The sealing configuration of the presealed elements and the seal provided by the insert molding step effect a seal configuration that causes a feed liquid to be filtered to form a filtrate such that the filtrate is not mixed with either the feed or a retentate.

  • Patent number: 6365395
Abstract: A process is provided for selectively removing protein aggregates and virus particles from a protein solution in a two-step filtration process. In a first step, a protein solution is filtered by tangential flow filtration through a cellulosic ultrafiltrate membrane at a transmembrane pressure of between about 1 and about 10 psi to produce a first permeate and a retentate stream. Water or aqueous buffer is added to the retentate stream to form an essentially constant volume retentate stream. The first permeate is filtered through a second ultrafiltration membrane to retain virus particles at a retention level of at least 3 LRV and to allow passage therethrough of a protein aggregate free and virus free protein solution.

  • Patent number: 6365023
Abstract: An electrodeionization-based process for purifying water to remove ionic species is disclosed. Ionic removal is accomplished by supplying an electrical current between an anode and a cathode of an electrodeionization module in the range of about 1.5 to 15 times a “theoretical minimum current”. The current is supplied by a power source capable of automatically increasing or decreasing voltage in response to a change in the electrical impedance of the electrodeionization module to maintain constant current. Conduct of the process on pretreated water yields deionized water of good quality, while maintaining conditions that promote the longevity of the electrodeionization module.

  • Patent number: 6306191
Abstract: A seal, a vent for a filter housing and a system for using them. The seal is designed a first outer seal having a closed outer periphery that divides and isolates a first inner area from the outside environment and a second inner seal formed along a portion of the inner surface of the first outer seal and forming a second inner area within the first inner area and which is isolated from both the first inner area and the outside environment. The seal is incorporated into a vent for a filter housing having opening is contained within a vent area and the opening is offset from the center of the vent area. The opening establishes a fluid pathway from the interior to the exterior of the filter device. The inner seal surrounds the vent opening. The outer seal also surrounds the vent opening at one of its ends and surrounds the entire periphery of the vent area so as to isolate the vent area from the area outside of the vent area.
