Abstract: An improved water flow test for determining the integrity and/or pore size distribution of a porous filter is disclosed. The improvement involves the ability to determine and take into account the changes in filter structure due to filter compaction or creep resulting from compressive forces when pressure is applied to the surfaces of the filter. By proper characterization of the filter under test, the initial system volume and the volume change associated with pressurizing the filter can be accurately determined at all points in time during a test cycle. As a result, composite flowrate changes (i.e. the flow due to filter compaction/creep plus the flow due to liquid intrusion) can be evaluated to distinguish between various flow components to accurately determine the pore size of the filter being tested or a filter defect.
Abstract: A flange structure formed from a plurality of joined flange segments is provided. The joined flange segments form a generally circular opening for a conduit. The generally circular opening has a perimeter formed from a first surface segment having discrete teeth and extending in a direction generally perpendicular to the faces and a second surface segment tapered toward one of the faces. The flange structure can be connected to a substrate by fasteners extending through two oval shaped openings connecting the two forces. At least one shim is attached to the flange segments about the circular opening. The shim has an inner surface with essentially the same surface configuration as the generally circular opening of the flange segments.
Abstract: A device for isolating and containing gas reactive materials includes a novel valve arrangement that is actuatable in conjunction with the movement of a pre-loaded metal diaphragm. The valve is situated in a housing having an inlet and an outlet fitting, a seat for the diaphragm and a metal tube in contact with the diaphragm to provide fluid communication between the housing and the gas supply to that the pre-loaded diaphragm is opened upon the connection of the gas supply to allow gas flow to the gas reactive material disposed within the housing. The pre-loaded diaphragm force is sufficient to form a fluid tight seal when the device is disconnected from a gas supply line therby sealing the interior of the device from the surrounding enviroment.

Abstract: A display device is provided comprising one or more masking discs being printed on a surface and a transparent area for viewing printed matter on a substrate disc such as a compact disc. A masking disc or a protective layer includes a bushing extending through a central hole of the compact disc so that each masking disc and substrate disc are rotatably mounted relative to each other. The bushing cooperates with a securing disc to maintain the masking discs and substrate disc together. The securing disc includes means for mounting the display device on a substrate independent of the display device.

Abstract: A multiwell filtration device having at least two liquid receiving reservoirs is disclosed in which at least one of the side walls includes one or more openings for passing liquid therethrough. A filtration membrane is sealingly adhered to the side wall covering the openings of each reservoir. The reservoirs are adapted to be positioned within the wells of a multiwell plate, which receives the filtrate passing from the reservoir through the membranes. The desired orientation of the reservoirs in the multiwell plate is retained before, during or after filtration to promote efficient automated sample handling techniques.

Abstract: An alarm system is provided for a card shaped object comprising a holder for the card shaped object and a detecting apparatus for detecting the absence of the card shaped object from the holder and a device transmitter. The transmitter device sends a signal to a component remote from the holder and a transmitter device. The transmitter device sends a signal to a component remote from the holder which contains a receiver of the signal and an adjustable alarm. A resettable timer is positioned either in the holder or in the component remote from the holder so that, after a set time period, is activated in response to the signal.
Abstract: A composite porous membrane is provided which comprises a porous membrane substrate having an average pore size between 0.01 and 10 microns formed of a first polymer which is coated over its entire surface with a crosslinked second polymer. The second polymer is dissolved in a solvent with a free radical polymerization initiator in the absence of a crosslinking agent. The second polymer is crosslinked in situ and rendered insoluble by mild heating and/or exposure to ultraviolet light.
Abstract: A manifold segment is provided for tangential flow filtration apparatus. The manifold segment includes a fluid feed conduit, a retentate conduit, a filtrate inlet and a filtrate outlet. An adaptor manifold is provided which directs filtrate from the manifold segment into a tangential flow filtration module and directs filtrate from the module into the manifold segment. Filtrate introduced into the tangential flow filtrate module reduces pressure drop across a filter layer in the module.
