  • Patent number: 4729046
Abstract: The cassette tape recorder for the four common types of cassettes according to German Industrial Standards DIN 32 715 T, 32 715 W, and the so-called micro-cassette as well as the mini-M-cassette comprises three sound head carriers (10, 20, 30) adapted to be moved selectively into operating position. Furthermore, the spacing between winding shafts (2,2') is adjustable by a movable cam disc (17). This adjustment is taken care of by cam disc engaging fixtures (23, 33) at the movable sound head carriers (20 and 30, respectively) and by a spring (18) holding the cam disc (17) in an inoperative position against a stop. Likewise provided are adjustable winding heads (3,3') causing different engagement members (4,6) to become effective for the winding drive, the adjustment of the winding heads (3,3') also being effected upon moving of the sound head carriers (10,20,30).

  • Patent number: 4727179
Abstract: A method and apparatus for locating the position of parts, and identifying hanges in parts position over time, within a radioactive cell by utilizing two cameras mounted on a stationary positioning table within the cell, each of the cameras being capable of relative displacement on the table under control of a computer, and each camera having a high resolution objective field smaller than the total desired viewing field. The method is implemented by simultaneously photographing the objective fields of both cameras, displacing one camera a predetermined distance relative to the other camera and repeating the step of simultaneously photographing, and repeating the displacement and simultaneous photographing steps over the entire viewing field; the method steps are repeated at a later time and a comparison is made of the viewing field images reproduced at the two times to identify relative changes in parts position with high resolution.

  • Patent number: 4718249
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of and apparatus for heating and cooling. The method and apparatus employ a thermodynamic moat across which heat energy conductance can be entirely prohibited. The moat comprises a heat source for a heat pump. The heat pump can be contained within the thermal protection of the moat. Thus its energy of operation may be added to, rather than lost from, the system. Structures for absorbing solar irradiation are disclosed, as are means to contain these structures within the protection of the moat, thereby to overcome grave deficiencies of solar collectors used in cold climates. A method of and apparatus for utilizing the solar absorber structures for summer cooling are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4707803
Abstract: An optical fiber communications system includes an optical pathway defined as a closed optical loop with a signal source introducing a fixed frequency optical signal onto the loop as a reference signal for system wide propagation. Each terminal device in the system includes a thermally controllable bus tap resonator which can be controlled in a step-wise manner to support plural sets of resonant modes having corresponding different free spectral ranges with one mode of each supported set of resonant modes frequency locked to the system reference signal and another mode used for communications purposes. The bus tap resonators are thermally controlled to allow each terminal device to tune from a first set of resonant modes having a first free spectral range to another set of resonant modes having another free spectral range so that the frequency of the mode used for communications in the latter set will be different from that in the former set.
