  • Patent number: 5241903
Abstract: A safety guard for the nip of two neighboring rolls in a calender has an elongated support which is located in front of the nip and has two elongated strip-shaped barriers each adjacent but spaced apart from the peripheral surface of one of the rolls. The support is mounted on the bearings for one of the rolls for pivotal movement about an axis which is parallel to the nip and carries cams which are biased against rollers on the bearings for the other roll by one or more reversible motors. If the bearings for one of the rolls are moved relative to the bearings for the other roll, the cams move along the respective rolls and/or vice versa, whereby the orientation of the support and of the barriers thereon is changed so that the width of the clearances between the barriers and the peripheral surfaces of the adjacent rolls does not exceed a maximum permissible value such as would enable a careless operator to introduce a finger into the nip.

  • Patent number: 5242260
Abstract: Discrete light sensitive exposed but undeveloped sheets which are stacked in a dark box are transferred toward or into one or more developing machines by one or more suction cups which can jointly attract a single sheet at a time or each of which can attract the uppermost sheet of one of two or more stacks of sheets in the dark box. A suction cup which attracts a portion of the uppermost sheet of a stack in the dark box is caused to flex the attracted portion above and away from the sheet below the uppermost sheet in order to promote separation of the uppermost sheet from the remainder of the stack. The flexed uppermost sheet is then at least partially extracted from the dark box and is monitored to ascertain whether or not its underside adheres to one or more sheets.

  • Patent number: 5240318
Abstract: A device for holding a drawer closed includes a fork-like member which is pivotable between an inoperative position and an operative position. When the drawer is open, the fork-like member is normally in the inoperative position. As the drawer is closed, a pin on the drawer engages a first tine of the fork-like member to thereby pivot the latter to the operative position in which the pin is engaged by a second tine of the fork-like member. The second tine biases the pin under the action of a spring so as to hold the drawer closed. A returning member is integral with the fork-like member and serves to return the fork-like member to the inoperative position if the fork-like member is unintentionally pivoted to the operative position while the drawer is open. The returning member is provided with a channel having a first open end adjacent to the fork-like member and a second open end which faces the pin when the drawer is open and the fork-like member is in the operative position.

  • Patent number: 5234397
Abstract: A continuous tow of filamentary filter material is advanced past a rotary applicator which delivers metered but variable quantities of a second filter material (such as granulated or pulverulent charcoal) into successive increments of the tow. The tow and the delivered second filter material are thereupon draped into a web of wrapping material to form a filter rod which is sub-divided into sections of desired length. The density and/or the mass of the filter rod or of successive filter rod sections is monitored and the results of such monitoring operation are utilized to regulate the rate of delivery of second filter material so that the mass or density of the rod remains constant. The draw resistance of the filter rod or of filter rod sections can be monitored to generate signals which are used to regulate the rate of advancement of the tow toward the draping station and to thus maintain the draw resistance at least substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 5234316
Abstract: A canned motor has a housing and a motor shaft which extends through the housing. A rotor is fixed to the shaft and is located in a rotor compartment within the housing. The rotor compartment has a flow path for circulation of a cooling and lubricating fluid through the compartment. A sleeve surrounds the shaft upstream of the flow path and is surrounded by a second sleeve. The two sleeves cooperate to define a gap which serves as a filter for fluid entering the rotor compartment. The minimum height of the gap is smaller than the minimum height of the flow path to prevent suspended solid particles which can obstruct the flow path from entering the latter. The sleeves are composed of a hard material so that oversized particles can be ground down by causing the fluid to repeatedly bring the particles into contact with the sleeves.
