  • Patent number: 7050759
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for improving the feedback of channel information to a serving base station, which allows a reduction in the reverse link load while allowing the base station to improve the forward link data throughput. Over a channel quality indicator channel, three subchannels are generated; the re-synch subchannel, the differential feedback subchannel, and the transition indicator subchannel. The information carried on each subchannel can be used separately or together by a base station to selectively update internal registers storing channel conditions. The channel conditions are used to determine transmission formats, power levels, and data rates of forward link transmissions.

  • Patent number: 7046701
Abstract: A composite signal has two components, each carrying a stream of information that may be digital. In one application of a method according to an embodiment of the invention, at least one of the components is delayed such that a time relation between the streams of information is altered. The components are transferred via a common signal path such that upon transfer, the original time relation between the streams of information may be restored.

  • Patent number: 7042972
Abstract: A digital PLL includes an adaptive PFD, an adaptive loop filter, an iDAC, an ICO, and a divider. The adaptive PFD receives a reference signal and a feedback signal, determines phase error between the two signals, and provides a PFD value for each phase comparison period. The magnitude of the PFD value is adjusted to achieve fast frequency acquisition and reduced jitter. The adaptive loop filter updates its output whenever a PFD value is received, widens the PLL loop bandwidth if a large phase error is detected, and narrows the loop bandwidth if a small average phase error is detected. The iDAC, which can be implemented with both steered and single-ended current sources, converts the loop filter output into analog current. The ICO provides an oscillator signal having a phase determined by the iDAC output. The divider divides the oscillator signal by a factor of N and provides the feedback signal.

  • Patent number: 7043239
Abstract: Techniques for downloading and displaying system tags by wireless terminals based on roaming status. A tag includes texts and/or graphics. The system tags include home system tags and roaming system tags, which include group tags and specific tags. A home system tag is associated with one or multiple home systems, a group tag is associated with one or multiple roaming indicator values, and a specific tag is associated with one or multiple SID values. A terminal is provided with home system tag, group tags, and specific tags. The terminal displays the home system tag when obtaining service from the home system and a roaming system tag when obtaining service from a roaming system. The particular roaming system tag to be displayed is dependent on the roaming indicator value and the SID value for the roaming system. The system tags may be downloaded to the terminal via over-the-air signaling.

  • Patent number: 7039398
Abstract: A system and method for displaying an interactive screen, such as an end-user license agreement or verification form, on the graphic display of a wireless device when the wireless device connects to a network server on a wireless network and attempts to access or download software applications and data. The user of the wireless device must then affirmatively interact with the interactive screen in order to access or download a software application or data from the network server. The interactive screen can be transmitted from the network server where the wireless device seeks to access or download an application or data, or can be transmitted from a separate server to the wireless device. The records of the wireless device-server interactions can be stored on a network server or other data stores on the wireless network.

  • Patent number: 7039138
Abstract: A computationally efficient method and apparatus for estimating the bandwidth of a received signal. In an exemplary implementation, signal power within several selectably narrow frequency bands, each centered about a selected frequency, are calculated using only a relatively small number of arithmetic operations. Applications include using the estimated bandwidth to estimate the relative velocity between the transmitter and receiver, and modifying receiver operation based on such estimate.

  • Patent number: 7039246
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to encoding techniques that can be used to improve encoding of digital video data. The techniques can be implemented by an encoder of a digital video device in order to reduce the number of computations and possibly reduce power consumption during video encoding. More specifically, video encoding techniques are describe which utilize one or more programmable thresholds in order to terminate the execution of various computations when the computations would be unlikely to improve the encoding. By terminating computations prematurely, the amount of processing required for video encoding can be reduced, and power can be conserved.

  • Patent number: 7035343
Abstract: A trellis decoder determines the most likely transmitted phase in response to previously requested phase adjustments and observed transmitted symbols. Maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding also may be used. Alternatively, the identified likely transmitted phase is used for data demodulation. This and related features have the benefit of decreasing the effect of phase discrepancies introduced by erroneous reception of phase adjustment information, resulting in improved error rates, and a corresponding increase in system capacity, data throughput, or both.

  • Patent number: 7035657
Abstract: A method and apparatus for delivering media to a group of target communication devices provides for multicasting media to the group of target communication devices to save network resources. The disclosed embodiments provide for a significant reduction in network traffic and media processing time by transmitting media in multicast transport mode, where a single copy of the media destined for a group of target recipients is transmitted to a wireless infrastructure over the multicast path. The wireless infrastructure replicates and transmits one copy of the media to each of the target recipients that are assigned to dedicated channels, but multicasts one copy of the media to the target recipients that are assigned to a shared channel.

  • Patent number: 7031282
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing orthogonal spot beams (14a, 14b), sectors (16a, 16b), and picocells (18), by using orthogonal auxiliary pilots and different Walsh traffic channels in adjacent areas. According to the IS-95 standard, the pilot signal is covered with the 64-chip Walsh sequence zero. Designating the 64-chip all zeros Walsh sequence as P and the 64-chip all one sequence as M, additional pilot signals are provided in the present invention by concatenating the P and the M sequences. Thus, for two pilot signals, pilot Walsh sequences of PP and PM can be used. For four pilot signals, pilot Walsh sequences of PPPP, PMPM, PPMM, and PMMP can be used. In general, the required number of pilot Walsh sequences can be generated by substituting each bit in an K-bit Walsh sequence with the 64-chip all zeros P or all ones M sequence, depending on the value of that bit.

  • Patent number: 7031678
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to techniques for voice and data transmission from a wireless communication device, such as mobile telephone handset. In accordance with the disclosure, a wireless communication provides a hybrid coupler that permits voice and data calls to be combined for transmission over a common air interface. When increased transmit power is required, the wireless communication device prioritizes the voice call over the data call. In this case, the voice call is sent over both the voice output branch and the data output branch, taking advantage of the power amplifier in each output branch chain to achieve a greater overall transmit power for the voice transmission. In this manner, the mobile subscriber unit independently and simultaneously handles data and voice calls under ordinary circumstances, but drops the data call and combines the voice and data output branches for voice transmission when increased transmit power is required for the voice transmission.

  • Patent number: 7027392
Abstract: A method (100) for scheduling packet data transmissions in a wireless communication system wherein a per-user Priority Function (PF) is calculated as a function of packet delay time of the user. When a given user has a packet delay time violating a threshold, the PF of the user is adjusted accordingly. In one embodiment, a delay function is applied to the PF calculation, wherein the delay function considers the average requested data rate for all users in the active set having pending data and the average data rate of a given user.

  • Patent number: 7027484
Abstract: The present invention describes a spread spectrum communication system wherein the frequency of carriers and the code channels of the carriers or both for transmission to a given remote station user vary in time. This provides for a direct sequence spectrum communications system which changes frequency or code channel according to a predetermined pattern. The code channels and frequencies can be determined in accordance with a deterministic function or based upon a subset of the data to be transmitted. A receiver structure is also described for receiving the same.
