  • Patent number: 7119606
Abstract: An N-FET headswitch has improved performance (e.g., less leakage current, lower ON resistance, and smaller area) over a conventional P-FET headswitch. The N-FET headswitch includes at least one N-FET device and couples between a power supply and a load circuit, which may be, e.g., a microprocessor, a digital signal processor, or a memory unit. The headswitch couples the power supply to the load circuit when the headswitch is enabled and cuts off the power supply from the load circuit when disabled. A charge pump couples to the headswitch and provides a control signal. This control signal is sufficiently high when the headswitch is enabled to ensure that the N-FET device operates in a linear region and has a small drain to source voltage drop. The headswitch may be operated as a power switch or in a feedback configuration to implement a linear or a digital voltage regulator.

  • Patent number: 7116725
Abstract: Techniques for processing a data transmission at the transmitter and receiver. In an aspect, a time-domain implementation is provided which uses frequency-domain singular value decomposition and “water-pouring” results to derive time-domain pulse-shaping and beam-steering solutions at the transmitter and receiver. The singular value decomposition is performed at the transmitter to determine eigen-modes (i.e., spatial subchannels) of the MIMO channel and to derive a first set of steering vectors used to “precondition” modulation symbols. The singular value decomposition is also performed at the receiver to derive a second set of steering vectors used to precondition the received signals such that orthogonal symbol streams are recovered at the receiver, which can simplify the receiver processing. Water-pouring analysis is used to more optimally allocate the total available transmit power to the eigen-modes, which then determines the data rate and the coding and modulation scheme to be used for each eigen-mode.

  • Patent number: 7113773
Abstract: Systems and methods for systems and methods for reliably broadcasting content to a plurality of users and facilitating distribution of portions of the broadcast content that either were not received by particular users, or were received with errors. In one embodiment, a wireless communication system is configured to broadcast content from a content source to a plurality of user devices. The content source is configured to provide the content to a base station. The base station parses the content into a plurality of segments and associates sequential identifiers with each of the segments. The content is then broadcast to each of the user devices. An identifier of an alternative data source is also provided to the user devices. When a mobile station receives the segments, it examines the segment identifiers to identify missing segments. The segments are then retrieved from the alternative data source identified by the base station.

  • Patent number: 7113522
Abstract: Wideband speech signals must be converted to narrowband speech signals if the transmission medium or the destination terminal is constructed with narrowband constraints. A typical wideband-to-narrowband conversion method is the elimination of frequencies above 3400 Hz using a low pass filter and a down sampler. However, this method produces a muffled speech sound since the resulting narrowband signal has a flat frequency response. Methods and apparatus are presented herein to enhance the acoustic quality of a wideband-to-narrowband converted signal. A bandwidth switching filter is used to emphasize a mid-range frequency portion of the wideband signal so that the resulting narrowband signal has a non-flat frequency spectrum.

  • Patent number: 7110765
Abstract: Techniques for limiting cell reselection in response to a variable channel are disclosed. In one aspect, a measurement of received pilot power from a base station is used as an indication of channel quality. In another aspect, hysteresis is applied to limit cell reselection, wherein the hysteresis is greater in relatively higher quality channel environments and lower in relatively lower channel quality environments. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of reducing cell reselection, thus increasing time spent in low-power mode, thereby reducing power consumption and increasing standby time.

  • Patent number: 7110463
Abstract: Techniques for efficiently computing spatial filter matrices are described. The channel response matrices for a MIMO channel may be highly correlated if the channel is relatively static over a range of transmission spans. In this case, an initial spatial filter matrix may be derived based on one channel response matrix, and a spatial filter matrix for each transmission span may be computed based on the initial spatial filter matrix and a steering matrix used for that transmission span. The channel response matrices may be partially correlated if the MIMO channel is not static but does not change abruptly. In this case, a spatial filter matrix may be derived for one transmission span l and used to derive an initial spatial filter matrix for another transmission span m. A spatial filter matrix for transmission span m may be computed based on the initial spatial filter matrix, e.g., using an iterative procedure.

  • Patent number: 7110357
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing voice latency in a voice-over-data wireless communication system. In a transmitter, data frames are created from audio information by a vocoder and stored in a queue. Prior to storage, some of the data frames are eliminated, or dropped, and are not stored in the queue. In a receiver, data frames are generated from received signals and stored in a queue. Prior to storage in the receiver queue, some of the data frames are dropped. Data frames are dropped either at a single fixed rate, a dual fixed rate, or a variable rate, generally depending on a communication channel latency. By dropping data frames at the transmitter, the receiver, or both, voice latency due to data frame retransmissions is reduced.

  • Patent number: 7106239
Abstract: A time-analog-to-digital converter (TAD) utilizes a time-to-digital approach for analog-to-digital conversion. The TAD includes two voltage-to-delay converters (VDCs), e.g., CMOS inverter chains, in order to increase the dynamic range of the TAD. Each VDC can handle a different range of input voltages. Comparators compare the input signal voltage to reference voltages corresponding to the different ranges of input voltage and a selector selects one of the VDC line outputs based on the range in which the input signal lies. A filter estimates the input signal voltage from a delay signal from the selected output.
