  • Patent number: 7469176
Abstract: A vehicle control system includes an active steering system having a steerable wheel defining a steering angle and a steering wheel defining an input control angle. The steering system further includes a coupler component, a actuator component, a controller component and a sensory component. The components are interconnected such that the controller component can selectively vary the steering angle relative to the input control angle. The steering angle defines a desired path. The sensor component detects a first vehicle operating parameter indicating that the vehicle is off road and a second vehicle operating parameter indicating that the vehicle has encountered an object preventing the vehicle from traveling along the desired vehicle path. The controller component is adapted to oscillate the steerable wheel when the sensor component detects that the vehicle is off road and has encountered an object preventing the vehicle from traveling along the desired path.

  • Patent number: 7461874
Abstract: A bumper system includes a rollformed tubular beam with bracket mounts welded to a rear surface for mounting to vehicle frame rails. The illustrated beam has a continuous tubular cross section for its entire length, and includes a center section, corner-forming end sections, and mounting sections connecting ends of the center section to the end sections. The center, end and mounting sections can be linear or similarly curved or differently curved. The center, end and mounting sections can be similarly or differently locally annealed as part of being tuned to specific impact loading criteria, including annealing all or part of cross-sectional areas. The annealing can be done in-line with a rollforming process, such as to assist with forming tight radii in the beam for meeting packaging/space-related requirements, or can be part of a secondary process for advantageously affecting impact strengths in selected localized areas.

  • Patent number: 7458637
Abstract: A back construction includes a back shell mounted on a back frame at top and bottom connections, and a flexible lumbar section biased forwardly by a biasing device. The bottom connection is located rearward of the back shell to allow unencumbered sliding entry into the seating unit from a lateral side position, but the bottom connection defines a virtual pivot forward of its physical location to provide the desired path of flexure when the lumbar section is flexed. In one form, the bottom connection is a pair of non-parallel links of dissimilar length. In another form, the bottom connection is a follower with two bearings following a guide slot. In some variations, the force of the biasing device is variable. Seating units incorporating the back construction include a vehicle seat, a foldable portable stadium seat, and a wheelchair seat.

  • Patent number: 7456586
Abstract: A device (300) includes a driver circuit (200) having a field effect transistor (FET) (30), acting as a current sink, a current sense network (10), an operational amplifier (opamp) (20), and a light emitting diode (LED) (40). Current sense network (10) is connected to the source electrode (32) of FET (30), as well as to the inverting input terminal (22) of opamp (20). The non-inverting input terminal (24) of opamp (20) is coupled to a variable voltage control signal source (VDAC) (110). The output terminal (26) of opamp (20) is coupled to the gate electrode (36) of FET (30). LED (40) is connected to the drain electrode (34) of FET (30). The brightness of LED (40) is controlled by varying the amplitude of the VDAC control signal, and on/off status is controlled by a switch S1 disposed between the output terminal (26) of opamp (20) and the FET (30).

  • Patent number: 7451630
Abstract: A method of forming a vehicle component, particularly an elongated impact beam, having an open section structure, in a manner to provide predetermined strategically strengthened portions, comprising the steps of cold forming unhardened steel into a workpiece having mounting surfaces, selectively fixturing the mounting surfaces, static induction heating the workpiece with lengthwise surface eddy currents on selected portions, followed by quenching of the fixtured heated workpiece to form strengthened portions, and unfixturing the resulting component. Also disclosed is apparatus to accomplish this, and the resulting novel vehicle component.

  • Patent number: 7446155
Abstract: Hyperbranched polymers having a plurality of at least two different types of functional groups are described. Specific embodiments include hyperbranched polymers having functional groups of a first type that are substantially uniformly distributed throughout the hyperbranched polymer molecule and a second type of functional group that is substantially uniformly distributed at the terminals of the hyperbranched polymer molecule. The hyperbranched polymers having different types of functional groups are synthesized by reacting one or more monomers having functional groups that are capable of reacting during a set of polymerization conditions to form a hyperbranched polymer, wherein at least one of the monomers contains latent functional groups that are not reactive during polymerization.
