Patent number: 7552955Abstract: A hybrid bumper system includes a polymeric reinforcement beam with end sections and structural covers attached to the end sections to considerably strengthen the end sections. Bracketry stably supports the reinforcement beam on a vehicle frame. A fascia covers at least part of the reinforcement beam but leaves a portion of the structural covers in a visible position. The structural covers are treated for aesthetics, such as by painting, chroming, or other surface treatment. In one aspect, the beam includes a molded polymeric beam component, structural L-shaped covers attached to its end sections, and a tie bar along its rear side that stiffens and rigidifies a center of the polymeric beam component. In another aspect, a tow bar or rail-to-rail metal reinforcement beam front system (or rear with tow bar) is incorporated.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2006Date of Patent: June 30, 2009Assignee: NetShape Energy Management, LLCInventor: Darin Evans

Patent number: 7549519Abstract: A spool-shaped damper piston which is slideably mounted on a damper rod and has an external foam friction element engaging the inner surface of the cylindrical damper body. A pair of axially movable limiting disks are spaced from the spool-shaped damper a predetermined distance to allow movement of the damper rod a predetermined amount before the spool-shaped damper is engaged. In one embodiment, the disks include axially extending tabs which extend through slots in the ends of the spool and selectively engage the foam friction element when the motion of the damping rod exceeds a predetermined threshold. In another embodiment of the invention, the limiting disks include spring fingers extending between the disks and the spool ends to cushion the initial engagement between the disks and the spool as the free space threshold is exceeded.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2008Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: Suspa IncorporatedInventors: D. Patent number: 7550703Abstract: An automatically dimming mirror includes a dimming element having variable reflectivity, the degree of reflectivity based on a control signal. An ambient light sensor is positioned to receive light from a region generally in front of the vehicle. The ambient light sensor outputs a discrete ambient light signal based on the amount of light incident on the ambient light sensor over an integration period. A glare sensor is positioned to view the scene generally behind the vehicle operator. The glare sensor outputs a discrete glare signal based on the amount of light incident on the glare sensor over an integration period. A dimming logic determines an ambient light level based on the ambient light signal. The glare integration period is determined based on the ambient light level. The glare signal resulting from the glare integration period determines a mirror glare level used to set the dimming element control signal.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2005Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: Gentex CorporationInventors: Jon H. Patent number: 7547055Abstract: A vehicle tailgate movement assist mechanism including a tailgate configured to rotate between opened and closed positions and a tailgate lever arm fixedly connected to a bottom area of the tailgate. A drive lever may be pivotally connected at one end thereof to the tailgate lever arm and pivotally connected at an opposite end thereof to a bell crank. The bell crank may be pivotally anchored at one end thereof to a vehicle body. A strut may be pivotally anchored at one end thereof to the vehicle body and pivotally connected at an opposite end thereof to the bell crank. With the mechanism configured as discussed above, rotation of the tailgate from a closed to an opened position simultaneously rotates the tailgate lever arm to impart movement to the drive lever and the bell crank to thereby actuate the strut to reduce an opening speed of the tailgate.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2007Date of Patent: June 16, 2009Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventor: Eric L. Patent number: 7547034Abstract: The fifth wheel hitch lube plate of the present invention comprises a perforated support member having a plurality of perforations and a lubricious material molded around the perforated support member such that the lubricious material covers both the top and bottom surfaces of the perforated support member and extends through the perforations formed in the perforated support member. Preferably, the support member is a perforated metal plate and the lubricious material is nylon, graphite, or an ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene material. The problems associated with utilizing nylon (or similar materials) and bonding it to a support plate are overcome by forming the plurality of apertures in the support plate so that a mechanical cohesive bond is formed between the upper and lower surfaces of the support plate, thereby substantially increasing the lube plate strength, and shear strength, while decreasing the likelihood that the lube plate may buckle.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2006Date of Patent: June 16, 2009Assignee: SAF-Holland, Inc.Inventors: Gerald W. Patent number: RE40736Abstract: A bumper beam includes an open front section made from a high-strength material such as ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS) material, and further includes a mating back section made of lower-strength material attached to a rear side of the front section along abutting flanges. The front and back sections combine to define different tubular cross sections. The front section can be roll-formed, and the back section can be stamped, thus taking advantage of roll-forming processes' ability to form high-strength materials, while allowing the back section to have a more complicated shape and be stamped. The abutting flanges telescopingly overlap in a fore-aft direction of the vehicle and are welded together at locations that potentially experience shear upon impact, but the flanges of the front section are captured within the flanges of the backs section, thus providing impact strength even if the attachment locations shear off.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2007Date of Patent: June 16, 2009Assignee: Shape Corp.Inventors: David W.
