  • Patent number: 4079609
Abstract: A control system for a multi-stage reducing apparatus having a series of material reducing stages through which elongate material is continuously advanced and progressively reduced in cross section. The control system is settable for establishing voltage analog signals representing the cross sections of the material at the plurality of successive stages and an input speed control signal for establishing the speed of the apparatus. A plurality of analog arithmetic units connected for being operated by the cross section signals and the speed control signal provide a plurality of speed reference signals for controlling the speeds of the material at the plurality of reducing stages respectively, each speed reference signal being directly proportional to the speed control signal and to the ratio of the cross sectional area of the material at the final stage to the cross sectional area of the material at the respective stage.

  • Patent number: 4074382
Abstract: A book forming and pressing apparatus provides a pair of chain driven conveyors or carriages in side-by-side relation which define a book flow path between the carriages on which are mounted a plurality of creasing iron assemblies. The creasing iron assemblies move through the book flow path in synchronized timed relation to the passage of books with a book pressed between each pair of creasing iron assemblies. An array of fixed elongated lamps are provided on a return side of each carriage for emitting radiant energy in a line focused on a path of travel of nippers of the creasing iron assemblies to heat and maintain the nippers at an elevated temperature for creasing each book at its hinge area upon the nipper being conveyed by its carriage into the book flow path.

  • Patent number: 4070060
Abstract: A manually operated dump truck is provided with front wheels which are located and mounted on the bottom of the truck, as for example, on swivels, so that they are selectively movable from a forward position substantially in advance of the center of gravity of the truck, which is the position selected when the truck is being loaded or used as a conveyance, to a position more closely adjacent the center of gravity when the truck is to be dumped thus reducing the amount of energy required to tip the truck forwardly in a dumping action. Manually controlled latching means is provided to maintain the wheels in the forward position.

  • Patent number: 4067513
Abstract: A coilable rule having a replacement cartridge comprising a hub, a spool for winding the tape and a keeper for maintaining the cartridge in factory adjusted position until it is field-installed in the tape casing is disclosed. The spool has a single side flange journaled on a hollow hub which is non-rotatably mounted within the casing with the hub providing a second side flange to define an annular spring chamber with the hub flange spaced from the spool by an annular clearance to prevent frictional contact and provide a unit bearing construction for the spool so that the spool is self-aligning. The keeper is snap-fitted into one of a plurality of non-circular openings in the hub flange and a central post passing through the hollow hub fixes the distance between the sidewalls of the casing to provide an axial clearance with the hub to accommodate the axial movement thereof.

  • Patent number: 4057650
Abstract: Small meat pieces are secured in an integral, internally knitted, bound and coalesced form by a new and improved curing and binding composition comprised of an aqueous saline curing agent blended into and absorbed within ground meat particles to form a solid unified mass or body of meat which on slicing has a texture, color and general appearance similar to a primal meat cut. The composite meat product is characterized by an integrated boundary between abutting pieces of meat as well as between meat and fat areas, yet the binding and curing composition is not visably noticeable in the finished product. It is at least partially absorbed by the meat pieces and effects the fused integral appearance of the desired final product which does not separate upon handling or slicing. The product is produced by a technique that permits its processing into any desired shape or form including that of bacon with all the attendant beneficial characteristics thereof yet with a reduced fat content.

  • Patent number: 4052971
Abstract: A liquid fuel injection pump for supplying timed charges of fuel to an engine by timed pumping strokes includes an adjustable timing mechanism for changing the timing of the pumping strokes. The timing mechanism includes an advance piston which is variably positionable in response to two different hydraulic control pressures. A speed related control pressure operates a servo mechanism associated with the advance piston to provide a component of speed advance. The reference position of a servo spring associated with the servo mechanism is varied by the second control pressure acting against a piston which mounts the spring and which is biased to a position of relatively advanced timing, thereby to add a component of advance which modifies or supplements the speed advance.

  • Patent number: 4049026
Abstract: An automatic bending apparatus for forming fasteners from metal wire strip, or bar stock includes a removable, axially movable, non-rotatable shaped central mandrel and a relatively rotatable faceplate mounting a bending pin disposed coaxially with the mandrel and independently axially movable relatively thereto. The apparatus includes a pair of shears positioned adjacent the mandrel along the path of movement of the stock and in advance of the mandrel and means for automatically feeding the stock. The invention is characterized in that the mandrel is substantially L-shaped and has a support rod and an arm with a U-shaped groove in the front face thereof through which the stock passes. The groove is dimensioned to closely receive the stock so that the supported portion therein is not deformed or bent during the bending operation and the external portion of the mandrel is shaped to define the curvature of the bent portions of the stock.
