  • Patent number: 8217724
Abstract: An atomic clock comprises endohedral fullerene systems which provide the standard frequency oscillations. A magnet device applies a magnetic field to the endohedral fullerenes. The applied magnetic field is adjustable. An excitation device both excites each endohedral fullerene system to cause it to undergo transitions which generate the time-keeping oscillations, and also probes the systems such that the oscillations can be measured and the device controlled. A detection device senses the response of the systems induced by the excitation device. The output of the detection device is fed to a controller. The controller produces the atomic clock output, which is the clock signal or frequency standard, and also controls the magnet device and the excitation device.

  • Patent number: 8215107
Abstract: A valve assembly couples a plurality of hydraulic actuators to a variable displacement pump and to a tank. A separate valve is associated with each hydraulic actuator and comprises a variable flow source orifice between the supply conduit and a summation node coupled to a pump control port, a variable metering orifice between the summation node and the associated hydraulic actuator, and a variable bypass orifice between the summation node and the tank. As a valve operates to enlarge the metering orifice, the flow source orifice also enlarges, and the bypass orifice shrinks. When the valve operates to shrink the metering orifice, the flow source orifice also shrinks and the bypass orifice enlarges. Those operations vary fluid flow in and out of the summation node, which alters pressure applied to the pump control, thereby causing the pump output to vary as required to drive the associated hydraulic actuator.

  • Patent number: 8218144
Abstract: A particle detector has a sample area of cross section no in excess of about 2 mm for containing environmental fluid, a light source on one side of the sample area for directing a collimated or nearly collimated beam of light through the sample air or water so that part of the light beam will be scattered by any particles present in the air or water while the remainder remains unscattered, and a beam diverting device on the opposite side of the sample area for diverting or blocking at least the unscattered portion of the beam of light and directing at least part of the scattered light onto a detector. The detector produces output pulses in which each pulse has a height proportional to particle size and a pulse height discriminator obtains the size distribution of airborne particles detected in the air or water sample at a given time from the detector output. The detector may also include a device for discriminating between biological agents and inorganic particles.

  • Patent number: 8219830
Abstract: A method for accessing data in a data storage system is presented. The method includes supplying a host computer that is in communication with the data storage system, where the data storage system includes a data storage medium and a holographic data storage medium. A first request is generated to access a directory encoded in the data storage medium and includes a first encryption key. The requested directory recites a listing of data files encoded in the holographic storage medium. If the first encryption key decrypts the directory, the directory is read and a data file encoded in the holographic data storage medium is identified. A second request is then generated to access the data file and includes a second encryption key. Finally, if the second encryption key decrypts the data file, then it is read.

  • Patent number: 8214013
Abstract: A method for prescribing a scan on an MRI system includes selecting a general pulse sequence to be used during a time-resolved imaging process of a subject using an MRI system. The method also includes setting a first set of scan parameters to more specifically prescribe the general pulse sequence and setting a second set of scan parameters using a formula that relates time resolution and spatial resolution resulting from the first set of scan parameters. The method then includes performing the time-resolved imaging process using the general pulse sequence, the first set of scan parameters, and the second set of scan parameters.
