Abstract: A process for producing a sterile article in a sealed container during a continuous production process. In a preferred embodiment, a contact lens is immersed in an ozone-containing solution within a container during a continuous lens packaging process, and the lens and container are subsequently subjected to ultraviolet radiation. This process sterilizes the contact lens and lens container in order to maintain the contact lens in a sterile environment during shipping, handling, and storage.
Abstract: A container, composition and method for preserving treatment solutions, in which the composition includes weak and strong preservatives. The dispensing container includes media within a dispensing tip which media removes or alters the strong preservative, while allowing the weak preservative to inhibit microbial growth in the tip media. The dispensing container is especially useful in delivering to the ocular environment ophthalmic solutions which are essentially free of strong preservative which may cause patient discomfort. A dispensing container including a pH-preserved pilocarpine solution is disclosed in one embodiment.

Abstract: The blister pack comprises a base portion and a cover layer. The base portion comprises a hollow chamber that contains a soft hydrophilic contact lens and a sterile aqueous preserving solution, and a substantially flat flange that extends right round the outside of the hollow chamber. The cover layer is releasably sealed to the flange in a sealing zone that extends right round the circumference of the hollow chamber. The flange comprises a grip region that extends from one side of the hollow chamber beyond the sealing zone and is covered by a corresponding grip region of the cover layer but is not sealed thereto.

Abstract: Methods of deblocking a polymeric article from a mold and/or removing undesirable materials from a polymeric article by applying supercritical fluids to the polymeric article. A preferred process is the treatment of ophthalmic lenses, such as contact lenses. Supercritical fluid, composed primarily of carbon dioxide, is applied to a contact lens affixed to a mold subsequent to the polymerization step. The application of supercritical fluid (SCF) causes the lens to efficiently and consistently separate from the mold, removes undesirable materials such as unreacted monomer, oligomers, or residual solvents from the lens core, and/or cleans the lens surface of adhered debris.
Abstract: A preservative-free ophthalmic composition useful in the treatment of conditions such as dry eye comprising an aqueous solution of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, polyethylene glycol, dextrose, potassium chloride, boric acid and sodium borate decahydrate.
Abstract: The invention relates to a novel process for the manufacture of mouldings, especially contact lenses, in which a soluble prepolymer comprising crosslinkable groups is cross-linked in solution, and also to mouldings, especially contact lenses, obtainable in accordance with that process. The present invention relates also to novel prepolymers that can be used in the process according to the invention, especially derivatives of a polyvinyl alcohol having a molecular weight of at least about 2000 that, based on the number of hydroxy groups of the polyvinyl alcohol, comprise from approximately 0.5 to approximately 80% of units of formula I ##STR1## wherein R is lower alkylene having up to 8 carbon atoms,R.sup.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl andR.sup.
Abstract: A pH controlled protein removal system and method in the substantial absence of (a) enzyme and (b) a surfactantly effective amount of a surfactant is disclosed. The method comprises contacting a substrate with a cleaning composition therefor, which compostion is substantially free of (a) enzyme and (b) surfactantly effective amount of a surfactant, for a period of time at an alkaline pH and removing said substrate from said composition.
Abstract: A preservative for ophthalmic solutions having an active ingredient is provided, having a hydrogen peroxide content of about 0.001% to about 0.10% by weight; and diethylene triamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid) or a physiologically compatible salt thereof, present at about 0.002% to 0.03% by weight and/or 0.005% to about 0.20% by weight of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, or physiologically acceptable salt thereof.
Abstract: The present invention relates to stable highly concentrated formulations of specific fluorescein derivatives, to the preparation of said formulations and the use thereof, especially for the photodynamic therapy of secondary cataract. The invention principally relates to an aqueous solution comprising a fluorescein diester, preferably a fluorescein di-lower alkyl ester, most preferably fluorescein diacetate, and a partially etherified .beta.-cyclodextrin the ether substituents of which are hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl or dihydroxypropyl groups, some of which ether substituents may be methyl or ethyl groups, said .beta.-cyclodextrin ether having a water-solubility of more than 1.8 g in 100 ml of water, preferably hydroxy-.beta.-cyclodextrin.

The polymers can be used, for example, as surfactants, thickeners, carriers for biologically active ingredients or in the manufacture of contact lenses.
Abstract: An ophthalmic lens disinfection apparatus, including a container and a mating cap, she apparatus having an improved seal and vent means for venting gas generated within the apparatus. The vent means is an integral part of the disinfection apparatus which allows venting of gas when internal pressure increases, while maintaining a seal which is substantially gas and liquid-impermeable at other times. The seal is defined by the interference mating of a flexible periphery on a container with a rigid mating rim on a cap. The apparatus is particularly useful in the disinfection of contact lenses with hydrogen peroxide in which the excess peroxide is decomposed into water and oxygen.
