  • Patent number: 7647238
Abstract: A computer-implemented warranty knowledge base construction system and method. An user interface receives a first rule related to vehicle repair claim processing. A rules syntax data store stores syntax rules for constructing repair claim-related rules. A knowledge base generator module connected to the user interface and to the rules syntax data store determines whether the first rule is in an acceptable syntax based upon the stored syntax rules. The first rule is used in a knowledge base system to process repair claims.

  • Patent number: 7644692
Abstract: A control method for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle that is used with a variable valve timing (VVT) system to promote lock pin disengagement. The method establishes if the VVT is at a lock pin position, establishes if a lock pin is not disengaged out of an associated recess, and can control the rate of movement of the VVT away from the lock pin position so that the lock pin can be disengaged out of the recess.

  • Patent number: 7634932
Abstract: A key fob for a vehicle has a first end that is used as a key for insertion into a vehicle ignition receptacle and a second end that defines an opening for internal storage of a separate, removable key. While the key fob will remotely unlock the vehicle doors and start the vehicle engine when turned in the vehicle ignition, the removable key is an auxiliary, mechanical access key that may be used on door locks and interior storage compartments. The key fob will not unlock interior storage compartments and the removable key will not sustain operation of the vehicle engine.

  • Patent number: 7632215
Abstract: An automatic transmission for a vehicle includes a main box controlled using a series of clutches, and an underdrive assembly controlled using a series of clutches and at least one overrunning clutch. In achieving a double-swap downshift from a first transmission “gear” employing a first main box clutch and a first underdrive assembly clutch, to a second transmission “gear” employing a second main box clutch and a second underdrive assembly clutch, a controller delays release of the first main box clutch until after the second underdrive assembly clutch has been prefilled, and fully applies the second underdrive assembly clutch only after slip has been detected in both the main box and the underdrive assembly. Additionally, the controller fully applies the second main box clutch only after the second underdrive assembly clutch has itself been fully applied.

  • Patent number: 7620486
Abstract: The present disclosure provides systems for microprocessors to control a transmission power relay output with a latchdown mechanism in the event that either microprocessor decides it is appropriate to de-energize the relay. Advantageously, the present disclosure allows, for example, the transmission control to be performed by an existing dual microprocessor configuration instead of a custom-designed application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The microprocessor-based software is more easily updated or changed to add functionality. Further, the present disclosure minimizes unique development with respect to electronic transmission control with a less complex design.

  • Patent number: 7612314
Abstract: A laser ablation method is used to polish a bearing surface of an automotive crankshaft. A laser ablation device generates a laser according to parameters such as wavelength, pulse duration, pulse repetition rate, and beam quality. The laser is applied to the surface of a rotating engine component, such as a crankshaft, as the component is rotated in order to polish the surface according to the parameters. The laser substantially improves tribological performance of the bearing surface by changing the waviness and form of the surface profile. Further, oil-retention reservoirs are formed in the surface. As a result, the friction coefficient of the crankshaft surface is reduced while the roughness of the crankshaft surface is maintained, reduced, or increased.

  • Patent number: 7610889
Abstract: A camshaft assembly including a target wheel is manufactured using an assembly process in which the camshaft is formed from a hollow tube. After the cam rings and a target wheel ring have been correctly positioned on the hollow tube, the tube is pressurized to expand its diameter, locking the rings into position on the tube. Locating the target wheel along the axis of the camshaft and spaced from the camshaft end allows the sensor to be located along the axis of the camshaft, and precludes the need to increase the overall length of the head to accommodate the target wheel and the sensor. In a dual overhead engine, the target wheels may be mounted on the two camshafts so that they may be read by a dual element sensor that is mounted between the two wheels.
