  • Patent number: 4927672
Abstract: A process for the accelerated fixing of fixable chromate-containing wood preservatives in which wood freshly impregnated by any of the full-cell, modified full-cell, empty-cell, or modified empty-cell treating processes are subjected to fixing by contacting the wood with hot liquid medium, such as water, which liquid is either initially hot or is rapidly heated to sufficient temperature so that the entire bundle of wood is brought to a temperature sufficient for complete fixation to occur within an economic period of time either within or after removal from the liquid medium.

Abstract: A roller press for compacting fine-grained chemicals, especially salts, into sheets, having synchronously driven rollers with two axially spaced pressing surfaces on ring elements being provided with radial shoulders at both of their ends. Screw feeders for feeding the salt into the roll nip and wedge-shaped wall elements closing-off the roll nip in the axial direction on both ends of said ring elements and bearing against the shoulders, are also provided. Adjustment rods acting parallel to the roll axis are provided for the outer wall elements and vertical rods between the inner wall elements acting onto these wall elements via wedge-shaped surfaces arranged on said rods and the walls of said wall elements facing each other. The ring elements are integral with the roller bodies or separate cylindrical rings shrink-fit onto the roller bodies. Each ring element is associated with at least two screw feeders.

  • Patent number: 4900356
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for producing metallized iron or other metal by direct reduction of particulate metal oxide is disclosed. Spent reducing gas is recycled from a reduction furnace through a cooler-scrubber and a catalyst-containing stoichiometric gas reformer. In the cooler-scrubber, the spent reducing gas interacts with scrub water. Dust having an affinity for sulfur is recovered from the process and added to the scrub water causing sulfur in the spent reducing gas to form solids which precipitate and are removed as solid waste. Lowering the sulfur content of the spent reducing gas reduces the sulfur contamination of the catalyst and improves the efficiency of the process.

  • Patent number: 4893765
Abstract: A core holder for a winding apparatus for winding webs of material in the paper, printing, and textile industries, including a rotatable core-receiving spindle or mandrel, and a segmented friction core holder, expandable outwardly at selected points, by which the core is tightly gripped when the mandrel is turning, and which readily releases its grip on the mandrel upon a simple manual maneuver by the operator, and is readily removable with little force. The core holder assembly is round, but the mandrel-receiving hole has segmented arcs which are not concentric with the outer surface of the core holder, creating stops which limit the movement of the segments about the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4865015
Abstract: The hearth guard includes a plurality of flameproof cotton batting sheets. A rectangular flameproof cloth encases the plurality of flameproof cotton batting sheets. Elastic bands are encased within and affixed inside the cover, situated at and parallel to the top and bottom of the cover, within openings defined by at least one seam. The elastic bands allow for fitting the cover to the hearth. Drawstrings are inserted longitudinally through the top and bottom of the cover, within openings defined by at least one seam. The drawstrings allow for securing the cover to the hearth. The elastic bands and drawstrings may use the same opening or may have separate openings. If separate openings are used, the openings may share a common seam. At least one pair of tie strings is used to secure the cover to an upstanding side. For each pair of tie strings, one tie string is affixed to the edge of the cover, while the remaining tie string is affixed to the opposite edge of the cover.

  • Patent number: 4836847
Abstract: A method for the pyrometallurgical treatment of environmentally hazardous steelmill flue dust and sludges to separate and recover the volatile heavy metals from the flue dust material and to convert the remaining iron into recyclable directly reduced iron pellets, or disposable non-hazardous reoxidized iron pellets, or pig iron or shot and slag. The dust is mixed with solid carbonaceous reductant and a binder, pelletized, optionally dried, and reduced in an inclined rotary reduction smelter vessel. • Patent number: 4752329
Abstract: A method of producing a hot, carburized metallized iron product in a generally vertical shaft furnace having an upper reducing zone in which iron oxide reacts with a gaseous reductant, and a lower carbon control and product discharge zone, including: establishing a gravitationally descending iron oxide burden in the furnace; reacting hot gaseous gaseous reductant with the descending burden to form a metallized iron product and a reacted top gas; and injecting a hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting of hot reformed reducing gas and cool natural gas to the product discharge section of the shaft furnace; whereby the carbon content of the metallized iron pellet product is controlled by mixing the reformed gas and natural gas in the proper ratio to balance the endothermic and exothermic reactions within the discharge zone of the furnace.
