Abstract: A process for the preparation of derivatives of halo-but-2-enoic acids and esters high in 2-ene content, several of which are novel. The esters and their derivatives are useful as promoters for the polymerization of ethylene or the copolymerization of ethylene with &agr;-olefins and, optionally, nonconjugated polyenes. The promoters can also be combined with transition metal compounds, e.g., vanadium, to form combination promoter-catalyst compounds.

Abstract: A method for producing aromatic amines such as N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine is disclosed wherein an amine substituted aromatic such as aniline is oxidized with oxygen or hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a preferred alkali metal pentacyano ferrate(II) complex made using water soluble ferrous salts with a non-oxidizing anion, preferably, ferrous sulfate, and containing various water soluble ligands, such as ammonia, mono alkyl amine, dialkyl amines, and trialkyl amines. The complex is subsequently catalytically reduced by hydrogenation using certain heterogeneous metal catalysts to yield the desired aromatic amine.
Abstract: A liquid phase polymerization process is provided for producing a polyolefin elastomer, e.g., one derived from ethylene, another &agr;-olefin such as propylene and optionally, a diene, employing a metallocene catalyst. The process comprises contacting monomer under liquid phase polymerization conditions with a catalyst composition obtained by combining (a) a metallocene procatalyst, preferably one containing a bridging group possessing at least two bulky groups, and (b) a cocatalyst such as aluminoxane, preferably a cation-generating cocatalyst, in partial or total replacement of aluminoxane.
Abstract: A polyolefin elastomer possessing a unique combination of properties, i.e., high molecular weight (Mw), high Mooney viscosity (ML1+4 at 125° C.), low polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) and low glass transition temperature (Tg), is obtained by a polymerization process employing a particular type of a metallocene catalyst. The polyolefin elastomer is useful for manufacturing a variety of products including rubber articles such as hoses, belts and moldings, polymer blends containing one or more other hydrocarbon polymers and lubricating oils in which the elastomer functions as a viscosity modifier. Also disclosed is a cocatalyst for activating the metallocene procatalyst employing a specific molar ratio of the components of the cocatalyst to the transition metal of the procatalyst.

Abstract: An axially elongated extruder screw includes a screw body having an axially extending extruding portion defined by a feed section at an inlet end of the screw, a metering section at an outlet end of the screw and a barrier section between the feed and metering sections.
