Patent number: 8073298Abstract: A process for fabricating a fiber composite underbody panel for a vehicle begins by laying-up a first fiber composite sheet on a suitable form or tool. Current carrying wiring that is normally carried by the floor is laid in place on the first sheet, with the ends of the wires extending beyond the edges of the sheet. The wires are shielded to prevent the radiation of fields therefrom into the interior of the vehicle. Fiber optic cable is used to carry signals. A second fiber composite sheet is then laid-up on the first sheet. The two sheets with the embedded wires are placed in a heated mold to form the sheets into the desired finished shape and configuration. The ends of the copper wires and the fiber optic cables are then terminated by connectors so that they may be later coupled to the circuitry of the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2008Date of Patent: December 6, 2011Assignee: Mag IAS, LLCInventor: Moshe I. Patent number: 8062763Abstract: A metal blank that includes a binder trim component having at least one cut edge with a non-linear section. The creation of the non-linear section simultaneously forms a corresponding section in a binder trim component of an adjacent metal blank so that binder material can be shared therebetween. This reduces the amount of scrap metal, as the binder trim component is subsequently cut off and discarded. Furthermore, the non-linear section can include one or more strategically placed formations, such as projections, recesses, flat sections, etc., that cause it to be non-uniform along its length and to be specifically tailored to the manufacturing requirements of the part being formed.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2008Date of Patent: November 22, 2011Assignee: Shiloh Industries, Inc.Inventors: John R. Patent number: 8057891Abstract: A thermo-reversible dry adhesive, having shape memory polymer characteristics, introduces one or more particles of micro- or nano-particles to at least one layer of the at least one layer of shape memory polymer. These particles may be remotely activated to induct heat sufficient to transform the dry adhesive material from its temporary shape to its permanent shape in the absence of load, which allows the dry adhesive to be reversibly coupled to one or more substrates, wherein the degree of adhesion is greater when the dry adhesive is in the temporary shape than in the permanent shape.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2009Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Yang T. Patent number: 8057133Abstract: Machining of aluminum workpieces with diamond or diamond-like carbon-surface coated tools may be conducted in an atmosphere containing hydrogen gas at a partial pressure effective for hydrogen to react with carbon atoms at the surface to form C—H bonds that resist adherence of aluminum to the tool surface. Suitably, hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas mixture is confined at the interface of tool and workpieces at the machining site. Hydrogen partial pressure may be determined for a tool-workpiece-machining temperature combination by calculation or experiment.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2008Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventor: Yue Qi

Patent number: 8056612Abstract: A discharge device discharges liquid steel into a roller crystallizer for the continuous casting of thin strip. The discharge device reduces turbulence at the meniscus to a minimum so as to eliminate the relative defects on the cast strip by passing the steel between two crystallizer rollers. A relative casting process provides expedients for improving the steel feeding from a tundish to the crystallizer. Advantageously, the feeding of guided steel jet streams inside the nozzle, or delivery nozzle, eliminates the disturbance at the meniscus caused by the air bubbles which can form when free-falling jet streams come into contact with the air.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2006Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: Danieli & C. Patent number: 8057767Abstract: Chemical species such as nitrogen oxide (NO), carbon monoxide, and low molecular weight hydrocarbons (e.g., C1-C5 and saturated or ethylenically unsaturated) in an oxygen-containing gas stream, such as the exhaust stream from a diesel engine, or other lean burn engine, may be oxidized using a mixture of MnOx with one or more other base metal oxides, with or without palladium. The oxidation is effective at temperatures above about 200° C. to convert about ninety percent or more of the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and to consume the hydrocarbons. The oxidation is also effective to convert much of the NO to NO2. In general, the mixed base metal oxides may be used as catalysts for the oxidation of nitrogen oxide in hot gas streams containing oxygen. They may optionally be used in a combination with palladium or platinum. But platinum, which is very expensive, does not have to be used in such oxidation reactions.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2010Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Gongshin Qi, Wei Li

Patent number: 8055308Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for responding to digital vehicle requests. After a telematics unit receives a voice query and converts the voice query to a compressed digital signal, the signal is transmitted to a call center node. The signal is then parsed at the call center node to determine an inquiry. The call center node may then formulate at least one response to the inquiry and transmit the at least one formulated response in a digital format over the wireless network to the telematics unit. The at least one formulated response is then translated to an analog format at the telematics unit.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2003Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: General Motors LLCInventor: William E.
