  • Patent number: 8052028
Abstract: A device for use with a welding apparatus, such as a friction stir spot welding (FSSW) apparatus, that maintains work pieces in a generally flat or flush orientation during a welding operation. The device can be mounted to the operable end of an FSSW apparatus so that it exerts a stabilizing force against an upper work piece. The stabilizing force exerted by the device prevents the upper work piece from deflecting when the rotating tool of the FSSW apparatus passes through the upper work piece and penetrates into the lower work piece. In an exemplary embodiment, the device includes a housing component that slidably receives a movable component under the force of a biasing component.

  • Patent number: 8055308
Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for responding to digital vehicle requests. After a telematics unit receives a voice query and converts the voice query to a compressed digital signal, the signal is transmitted to a call center node. The signal is then parsed at the call center node to determine an inquiry. The call center node may then formulate at least one response to the inquiry and transmit the at least one formulated response in a digital format over the wireless network to the telematics unit. The at least one formulated response is then translated to an analog format at the telematics unit.

  • Patent number: 8051806
Abstract: An animal behavioral control apparatus includes a cartridge, a housing, a head, and an extension assembly. The cartridge contains pressurized gas. The housing surrounds a part or more of the cartridge. The head is connected to the housing and includes an actuator and a valve. The valve engages the cartridge when the actuator is actuated in order to release gas out of the cartridge. The extension assembly is connected to the head to receive gas from the head. Upon actuation of the head, gas flows through the extension assembly and the animal behavioral control apparatus ejects a blast of gas which can be directed at an animal.

  • Patent number: 8048078
Abstract: A tool (1) is constructed for single use for making drill-holes in bones or removing cylindrical drill-hole cores from bones of the human body with a tubular tool body (2) which can be inserted into a receiving bore (8) of a tool holder (4). At least one cutout (5) in the tool body (2) and at least one protrusion (10) of the tool holder are coupled to rotationally affix the tool (1) to the tool holder (4). In the process, a flexible tongue (15) on the tool body (2) latches into an opening (16) of the tool holder (4) to axially fix the tool body. After the tool (1) has been used, the tongue (15) can be pushed out of the opening from outside, with plastic deformation, so that the tool can no longer be connected to the tool holder (4).

  • Patent number: 8050419
Abstract: A vehicle audio system such as a vehicle radio is integrated with a vehicle speech system so that outputted speech by the vehicle speech system is played through the audio system. When a speech session begins, the audio system mutes any entertainment audio being played and outputs audio speech received from the vehicle speech system at an initial volume that is constrained to be between minimum and maximum initial volume settings. These initial volume settings are automatically adjusted by the audio system if it detects that the user has a tendency to repeatedly adjust the volume past one of these settings each time a speech session is carried out.

  • Patent number: 8050673
Abstract: A system and method for making vehicle originated calls to a telematics service provider or other call center. The method includes identifying a call type associated with a desired wireless communication of speech or data to the call center, and then carrying out one of a number of different call connection processes depending on the call type. For voice channel cellular connections, an in-band modem cellular connection is preferably established in most instances using a connection retry strategy that includes primary, secondary, and possibly tertiary connection attempts. The system and method can be carried out in connection with various cellular system technologies, but is especially suited for use with GSM systems.

  • Patent number: 8050811
Abstract: A method for controlling the wireless distribution of vehicle-related data that is collected from a vehicle and is distributed to one or more authorized recipients in a confidential manner. This method uses predetermined business rules, which can be maintained and/or applied at the vehicle, at the telematics service provider, or elsewhere, to control the distribution of vehicle-related data. These business rules can determine which pieces of vehicle-related data, if any, are to be sent to which authorized recipients and can do so in a confidential manner that prevents even the telematics service provider from having access to the vehicle-related data.

  • Patent number: 8047665
Abstract: An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a motor vehicle includes a housing defining an interior and including a mirror opening oriented rearward when the exterior rearview mirror assembly is secured to the motor vehicle. A backing plate is operatively connected to the housing in the interior. The backing plate is selectively moveable within the housing. A primary mirror is fixedly secured to a first portion of the backing plate. A secondary mirror is fixedly secured to a second portion of the backing plate. The secondary mirror is spaced apart from the primary mirror. An adhesive member extends between the backing plate and the primary and secondary mirrors such that the single adhesive member secures all of the primary and secondary mirrors to the backing plate. A demarcation divider separates the primary and secondary mirrors. The demarcation divider is secured to the backing plate.

  • Patent number: 8050928
Abstract: A method of speech to DTMF generation involving ASR-enabled and DTMF-controlled communications systems. The ASR-enabled system is used to recognize speech received from the DTMF-controlled telecommunications system using sampling rate independent speech recognition. It then identifies a speech segment contained in the speech received from the DTMF-controlled system that corresponds with at least one keyword associated with user-defined data. Then, the ASR-enabled system transmits at least one DTMF signal to the DTMF-controlled system in response to the identified speech segment. This allows a user of an ASR-enabled system such as a vehicle telematics unit to at least partially automate access to the DTMF-controlled system using the telematics unit, so that voice mailbox numbers, passwords, and the like normally entered via a telephone keypad can be automatically sent to the DTMF-controlled system from the telematics unit without having to be manually input each time by the user.

  • Patent number: 8049359
Abstract: A method is disclosed that defines a protocol for distributing power to high voltage components when two conditions exist: they being when the vehicle is being propelled or operated and when the power requested of the power supply is less than what the power supply can provide. The method determines which high voltage components can receive reduced or intermittent voltage and still allow the vehicle to operate in a proper manner. Calibrations of the usage and energy loss are based on parameters that dictate how important it is that a particular high voltage component receives as much of its requested power as possible. The critical function components will be weighted differently than those less critical components.
