Abstract: A scavenging valve assembly is used in a carburetor. The valve assembly includes a throttle valve and a rotary air valve. The throttle valve opens and closes an air-fuel passage. The rotary air valve opens and closes an air passage and has one or more air bore(s). When the rotary air valve begins to rotate, airflow travels through the bore(s) and the size of an opening area that airflow travels through continuously increases in size.
Abstract: A swing arm for managing a power cord to an electric vehicle has a proximate arm member with a pivotable connection about a vertical axis for connection to the vehicle in proximity to a longitudinal center line of the vehicle. A distal arm member is pivotably connected about a pivot vertical axis to the proximate arm member and resiliently biased to extend straight out with respect to the proximate arm member. The swing arm is dimensioned to extend the distal arm member beyond a side of the vehicle when the swing arm extends laterally with respect to the vehicle. A spring member is connected to the distal arm member for resiliently biasing the distal arm member to extend straight out with respect to the proximate arm member against a side force below a predetermined amount and yieldable to bending of the distal arm member upon exertion of a side force above the predetermined amount.
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for communicating data over a voice channel of a wireless communication system. The method includes receiving a first periodic data signal and modulating the first periodic data signal to produce a second periodic data signal. Modulating the first periodic data signal includes inserting a predetermined silence period into the first periodic data signal at timed intervals to produce the second periodic data signal. The method further includes communicating the second periodic data signal over the voice channel of the wireless communication system. The method of modulating the first periodic data signal may include receiving a control signal that includes parameters for a length of the predetermined silence period and timing of the intervals, modulating the first periodic data signal responsive to the received control signal, and producing the second periodic data signal.

Abstract: Tin powder is heated in a flowing stream of an inert gas, such as argon, containing a small concentration of carbon-containing gas, at a temperature to produce metal vapor. The tin deposits as liquid on a substrate, and reacts with the carbon-containing gas to form carbon nanotubes in the liquid tin. Upon cooling and solidification, a composite of tin nanowires bearing coatings of carbon nanotubes is formed.

Abstract: A method for reducing or mitigating the effects of vibration in a vehicle brake system, particularly those that can lead to brake groan or other unwanted noise. According to an exemplary embodiment, when the vehicle brake system detects certain vibratory conditions, it makes slight braking adjustments (e.g., adjustments to fluid pressure, brake force, brake torque, etc.) that are aimed to address the brake groan. The vehicle brake system can then determine the effectiveness of the braking adjustments and, if need be, make additional braking adjustments. The method is particularly well suited for use with brake-by-wire systems, but can be used with a number of different vehicle braking systems.
Abstract: An automated method for remotely changing the mobile number (MDN or MIN) of a wireless communications device, such as a vehicle communications device capable of making hands-free calls. Generally, some wireless carriers do not allow multiple mobile numbers to be simultaneously activated to a single wireless communications device. Therefore, when a mobile number change request is made, the automated method determines what type of process is most appropriate for that change: an indirect change process that uses at least three mobile numbers (current, intermediate, and target numbers) and addresses the above-mentioned wireless carrier limitations, or a direct change process that uses only two mobile numbers (current and target numbers). In either case, a wireless data link is established between a call center and the vehicle communications device so that the remote number change can be performed.

Abstract: A method for use with a vehicle battery pack, where the method determines a voltage threshold that may prevent the vehicle battery pack from being overcharged. The voltage threshold may be a dynamic threshold that changes or adjusts over time in order to accommodate changing conditions in the vehicle battery pack, the vehicle and/or the surrounding environment. The method may consider one or more battery readings when determining the voltage threshold, including temperature, voltage and/or current readings. According to one embodiment, the method is designed to accommodate high-current, short-duration charging events, like regenerative breaking.

Abstract: A system and method for data communication over a cellular communications network that allows the transmission of digital data over a voice channel using a vocoder that operates in different modes depending upon characteristics of the inputted signal it receives. To prepare the digital data for transmission, one or more carrier signals are encoded with the digital data using one of a number of modulation schemes that utilize differential phase shift keying to give the modulated carrier signal certain periodicity and energy characteristics that allow it to be transmitted by the vocoder at full rate. The modulation schemes include DPSK using either a single or multiple frequency carriers, combined FSK-DPSK modulation, combined ASK-DPSK, PSK with a phase tracker in the demodulator, as well as continuous signal modulation (ASK or FSK) with inserted discontinuities that can be independent of the digital data.

Abstract: A shape memory polymer workpiece is attached to a second workpiece. A face of the SMP workpiece is placed against an attachment surface of the second workpiece. The second workpiece has an attachment hole(s). The SMP workpiece is activated (e.g., heated) to a softening temperature and a portion extruded into the attachment hole of the facing surface of the second workpiece. The SMP piece is held while still heated against the second workpiece, the material flowing as result of the shape memory effect to form an attachment. As the SMP material cools while still under load its modulus increases fixing the attachment geometry. Reheating the attached parts without pushing them together reverses the process.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a film of solid lubricant particles is applied to metal workpieces, which are then subjected to a controlled humid environment for predetermined times and temperatures. Following the exposure to humidity, the lubricated metal workpieces are heated for a hot forming operation. The humidification of the lubricated workpiece increases the adhesion of solid lubricant films to the metal workpieces, thereby improving the tribological performance of the workpieces during subsequent hot forming operations.
Abstract: The performance and durability of static and dynamic seals for hydrogen storage and supply systems has been improved by utilizing a spring-energized and plastic coated radial seal in combination with at least a mating surface that has been treated by one of a variety of procedures. These procedures include applying to the mating surface a low-friction, hard, and hydrogen impervious coating, chemically polishing the mating surface, and electrochemically polishing the mating surface. Each of these procedures significantly reduces, on a microscopic scale, the surface roughness of the mating surface. The seal can thus form a tighter and more gas-tight seal with the smoother mating surface so as to decrease the loss of hydrogen gas across the seal. The smoother mating surface can also improve seal life by reducing seal surface wear.

Abstract: A polishing disc for a tool for the fine machining of optically active surfaces, particularly on spectacle lenses as workpieces, comprises a main body which has a center axis and on which there is fixed an intermediate layer which is softer than the main body and on which a polishing agent carrier rests. The intermediate layer has, with respect to the center axis, a radial inner region of substantially constant axial thickness and an adjoining radial outer region. The latter is formed or is fixed to the main body in a particular way so as to prevent the edge of the polishing disc from being imprinted on the machined surface of the workpiece in the form of very fine, scratch-like microstructures. Also proposed is a simple method which can be used to produce such a polishing disc.
Abstract: A method, fuel system, and components for facilitating the delivery of liquid fuel from a fuel tank in fluid communication with a float bowl carburetor of an internal combustion engine, wherein evaporative emissions of the fuel from the fuel tank and float bowl carburetor are mitigated. During operation of the engine, fluid communication is permitted between the fuel tank and the carburetor, and fuel vapors at a predetermined threshold superatmospheric pressure are permitted to vent outwardly from the fuel tank. During inoperation of the engine, fluid communication is prevented between the fuel tank and the carburetor, and fuel vapors at a predetermined threshold superatmospheric pressure are permitted to vent outwardly from the fuel tank.
