  • Patent number: 4626191
Abstract: This invention relates to combustion control. It preferably uses a microphonic probe. Within a water circulation enclosure, a probe head defines a thin channel joining a cavity to a furnace, the cavity being closed by a diaphragm arranged as an acoustic transducer. The acoustic pressure which is detected is connected to the combustion characteristics. The invention is used in particular for turbulent premixture flames.

  • Patent number: 4624326
Abstract: A process is disclosed for cutting rock by means of discharging a medium under high pressure from a nozzle head at a fixed oscillating angle. A nozzle head on the end of the pressure hose is set in a freely pulsating movement through the discharge of a medium under high pressure. The movement of the nozzle head is controlled by a guide with stops. An apparatus for carrying out this process is also disclosed. The apparatus comprises a suitable nozzle head on a delivery line 1 for discharging a medium under high pressure and with a fixed oscillating angle and a guide 6 with stops 4. A flexible high-pressure hose is used as the delivery line 1.

  • Patent number: 4615266
Abstract: A pad transfer printing machine is disclosed in which the engraved printing plate is suspended face-down at an elevated position above the surface to be printed, and is horizontally movable between a retracted position and a pad contacting position. The plate is inked and scraped as it moves horizontally and, at the pad contacting position, presents an inked image to a deformable transfer pad. A movable printing member drives the transfer pad in alternating upward and downward strokes and inverts the pad during each upward and downward stroke, so that the transfer pad is alternately brought into contact with the printing plate at the top of its stroke and with the surface to be printed at the bottom of its stroke. The elevated position of the printing plate renders it easily accessable for removal and replacement. Excess ink is automatically removed from the printing plate by the scraping device as the plate is removed, and the excess ink is returned to the ink supply.

  • Patent number: 4604814
Abstract: The subject matter of the invention relates to apparatus for cooling or drying coarse-grained bulk material, comprising a plurality of trays mounted one above the other for rotation about a common axis, each tray being divided into a plurality of segments adapted to be tilted about a tilt axis extending in a radial direction of said common axis, means supporting said segments in the plane of the respective tray and permitting said segments to be tilted only within a determined angular range of rotation, and means for forcibly tilting each segment within said angular range. In prior art constructions, different means for forcibly tilting each segment in the said angular range have been required, depending on the time required by the feed material to pass through the cooling apparatus and on the number of trays employed in the cooling apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4605395
Abstract: To treat hydrocephaly, an intracranial catheter is implanted in the head. It is connected to a tube fitted with a non-return valve and serves to divert the flow of cephalo-rachidian liquid to the peritoneum or to the right auricle of the heart. In accordance with the invention a hydraulic filter of non-linear variable impedance is connected in the tube in series with the valve. The filter maintains an average flow rate of the cephalo-rachidian liquid close to the physiological flow rate, but prevents sudden rushes of fluid flow, thereby permitting the intracranial pressure to vary in the short term in the normal manner over a characteristic period of about one second, while preventing said pressure from rising slowly in the long term, e.g. over a characteristic period of about one minute. This is done by a bead (160) which is housed in a cavity (161) extending between a proximal orifice (111) and a distal orifice (136). The distal orifice constitutes a leaky valve seat for the bead.

  • Patent number: 4605135
Abstract: A bottle with a neck (1) has a child-resistant screw closure cap (13). In order to make the cap (13) child-resistant, the neck (1) is fitted with a collar (7) of U-shaped cross-section. The collar (7) is retained on the neck (1) by engagement of pawls (11) inside a portion (8) of the collar under a retaining ring (2) on the neck (1). The cap (13) is screwed onto the part (8) of the collar and to allow this to be done, the collar (7) is prevented from rotating on the neck (1) by engagement of the pawls (11) with ratchet teeth (4) on the outside of the neck (1). The pawls (11) and the ratchet teeth (4) are so shaped that if an attempt is made to unscrew the cap (13) merely by turning it in a counter-clockwise direction as seen from above, the pawls (11) ride over the ratchet teeth (4) so that the collar (7) is lifted on the neck (1) and is free to rotate.

  • Patent number: 4602901
Abstract: A milling-boring machine is described which allows various types of operations to be carried out on a workpiece of medium-large size so as to allow its complete working in a single location. The machine includes a pillar, a slide movable vertically along the pillar and a cylindrical head rotatably mounted in the slide, the head being rotatable and the slide being movable by digitally controlled drive means. The head carries two mandrels with their axes parallel to each other and parallel to the axis of the head, and at a predetermined distance therefrom, the mandrels being selectively rotatable at different speeds. Selected tools are mounted on the mandrels and on tool accessories attachable to the head. The machine further includes an accessory magazine for selectively supplying accessories to the head and a tool magazine for selectively supplying tools to the mandrels and to the tool accessories, with automatic devices for changing the accessories and the tools.

  • Patent number: 4595653
Abstract: The present invention describes the inactivation of target cells by treatment of said cells with psoralens and irradiation with long wave length ultraviolet light. The inactivated cells are shown to be antigenic and are shown to be non-infective. These cells are useful as target antigens for in vitro assays of cellular immunity. Diagnostic kits containing the inactivated, target cells are prepared for use in serologic assays. Since the inactivated cells are immunogenic and non-infective, they are also useful as vaccines.

  • Patent number: 4593855
Abstract: The invention provides a modular fire fighting apparatus which may be quickly and easily mounted onto an ordinary pickup truck, and conveniently operated by the vehicle driver from the cab of the vehicle. The module generally includes a pump coupled to an engine for pumping a fire-retardant liquid, a control means for regulating the amount of liquid pumped, and a reservoir tank fluidly connected to the pump. The frame of the apparatus both unitizes the pump, engine and tank, and positions the engine and pump controls within the reach of the operator when the operator is in the cab of the vehicle. The invention further includes a tank level indicator including a transparent conduit and an elongated float engaged onto a guide rod in the tank for providing a visual display of the tank level which is positioned so that it may be observed through the rear-view mirror of the truck.

  • Patent number: 4590105
Abstract: An artificial tree, simulating a Christmas tree, includes a vertical trunk and a plurality of limbs made of twisted wire extending from the trunk. A plurality of "wire brush" type filaments are arranged in parallel on a tape carrier. The tape carrier, with the filaments, is interleaved in the twisted wire of the limbs to provide the appearance of needles extending from the limb. This provides an inexpensive way of making a realistic looking artificial tree.
