  • Patent number: 4409015
Abstract: A two stage process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of a urea-formaldehyde condensation product comprising: in a first stage, reacting together formaldehyde and urea in a molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea in the ratio from about 2.5 to 1 to about 4.7 to 1 in the presence of a condensation catalyst until the methanol tolerance is in a range such that the condensate is clear and will remain clear, substantially free from precipitated reaction material, upon storage for one year at room temperature, to form an intermediate reaction product, then in a second stage, reacting said intermediate reaction product with an additional amount of urea such that the overall molar ratio of urea to formaldehyde is in the range from 0.8 to 1 to about 1.7 to 1, at an acid pH and at an elevated temperature not above about 70.degree.C., until the amount of water insoluble nitrogen present in the reaction mixture is in the range from about 15% to about 35% based on the total amount of nitrogen in the system.

  • Patent number: 4398721
Abstract: A board game is designed to convey nutritional education, by assigning to each space along a playing path on the board an association with a food. This association includes some nutritional characteristic such as its salt content per serving. The object of the game is for each player's piece to traverse the playing path while accumulating, by the piece landing on different spaces, a number of different food associations characterized by a total content of the particular ingredient in question. With substances such as salt, absorbable cholesterol, or saturated fat, the winner is the player having the smallest total amount of the ingredient.

  • Patent number: 4397335
Abstract: A rotary valve, especially designed for use in medical systems, has an arrangement of passageways in its rotary valve plug and ports in its housing that permit manual manipulation of the valve to switch the medical system from monitoring pulmonary artery pressure to measuring central venous pressure. The system can also be used for cardiac output measurement or for the withdrawal of a mixed venous blood sample. Patient trauma and contamination are avoided.

  • Patent number: 4397926
Abstract: A cheese analog and processes for making it. The casein content comprises a combination of rennet casein and acid casein. The process involves forming a paste of rennet casein with a melting salt solution, blending acid casein with the paste until the acid casein is completely dispersed, adding edible oil and other conventional ingredients to the blend and cooking and mixing until a homogeneous, smooth plastic mass is obtained, and then cooling the mass to form the product.

  • Patent number: 4384045
Abstract: An improved immobilized enzyme composite is prepared by subjecting a siliceous carrier to an initial treatment with alkali, then acid, then reacting the carrier with an organosilane. The organosilane may then be coupled through a covalent coupling agent with an enzyme. The alkali-acid treatment provides an exceptionally high number of hydroxyl groups per unit volume, so that the treated carrier is especially useful in the preparation of high performance immobilized enzyme compositions, particularly by multi-layering immobilization, providing a very high amount of enzyme activity per unit volume. Multi-layering is accomplished by successive steps of bonding a difunctional covalent coupling agent to a previously immobilized enzyme layer, then bonding an additional layer of enzyme to the coupling agent. This may be repeated to apply as many layers as desired.

  • Patent number: 4359733
Abstract: A system for determining the positions of a plurality of vehicles traveling on or above a defined sector of the earth's surface comprises a transponder carried by each vehicle for transmitting a uniquely coded beacon signal in response to a general interrogation signal, at least three repeater-carrying satellites at spaced orbital locations above the earth for receiving and retransmitting the beacon signals produced by the vehicles, and a ground station for periodically transmitting the general interrogation signal and for receiving and processing the beacon signals retransmitted by the three satellites in order to determine vehicle position. In order to avoid signal overlap and equipment saturation at the ground station, each vehicle transponder includes means responsive to the general interrogation signal for inhibiting the transmission of further beacon signals by the transponder for a predetermined time interval following the response of the transponder to the general interrogation signal.
