Abstract: A label applicator is disclosed for receiving pressure-sensitive labels which have been peeled from a backing strip and for applying the labels to a desired surface. The tendency of the labels to bunch or wrinkle as they are delivered to the applicator face is avoided by causing the labels to bow or curve outward slightly from the plane of the face plate, with the bowing or curvature occurring across the width of the label in a direction transverse to the feed direction. The bowing increases the longitudinal stiffness of the label in the feed direction, and allows the label to be pushed across the applicator face without bunching or wrinkling even when relatively long and narrow labels are employed.

This process is characterized in that a solvatochromic compound is added to a solution or dispersion of the sample in a solvent or directly to the liquid sample, the solvatochromism band .lambda..sub.max in the UV-vis-spectrum is determined, the E.sub.T -value (molar excitation energy) of the solvatochromic compound is calculated and the water concentration is determined in accordance with the following equation:c.sub.H.sbsb.2.sub.O =C*exp(E.sub.T /E.sub.D -E.sub.T.sup.o /E.sub.D)-c* (1)in whichE.sub.T is the molar excitation energy of the solvatochromic compound,E.sub.T.sup.o is the E.sub.T -value of the pure anhydrous solvent,c* and E.sub.D are empirical parameters which may be taken from Tables or empirically determined.
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for determining the composition of binary liquid mixtures. This process is characterized in that a solvatochromic compound is added to the sample to be analyzed, the solvatochromism band .lambda..sub.max is determined in the UV-spectrum, the E.sub.T -value (molar stimulation energy) of the solvatochromic substance is calculated and the concentration of the more polar component is determined in accordance with the following equationc.sub.P =c*exp(E.sub.T /E.sub.D -E.sub.T .degree./E.sub.D)-c* (1)in whichc.sub.P represents the concentration of the more polar component, the component having the greater E.sub.T 30-value being defined as the more polar component,E.sub.T represents the molar excitation energy of the solvatochromic compound,E.sub.T .degree. represents the E.sub.T -value of the pure, more apolar component,E.sub.T 30 is the E.sub.T -value using pyridinium phenol betaine andc* and E.sub.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the regeneration of sunflowers via organogenesis. The process comprises the steps of:(a) culturing tissue obtained from a sunflower plant on a first medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, amino acids, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure callus formation;(b) subculturing said callus on a second medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure shoot formation, and(c) subculturing said shoot on a third medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure root formation, whereby plants are obtained.
Abstract: A filter device suitable for use in cleaning dampening water used in an offset press. The filter device has a tank in which are defined three sections: a stirring tank section, a floating tank section and a discharging tank section. The floating tank section and the discharging tank section are communicated with each other through a passage at their lower regions. The passage is adapted to be selectively closed by a shut-off device which is operated periodically under the control of a timer. A floating contaminant removing opening es positioned above the water level in the floating tank section. The contaminated water is poured into the stirring tank section through a bubbling means so that contaminants are adsorbed by the bubbles. The bubbles adsorbing the contaminants are allowed to float in the upper region of water in the floating tank section.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the regeneration of sunflowers via embryogenesis. The process comprises the steps of:(a) culturing tissue obtained from a sunflower plant on a first medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, amino acids, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure embryogenic callus formation;(b) subculturing said callus on a second medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure embryo formation and germination of said embryo, and(c) subculturing said embryo or said germinated embryo on a third medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins and sucrose, whereby plants are obtained.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the regeneration of cereals including barley, corn, wheat, rice and sorghum. The process comprises the steps of:(a) culturing tissue obtained from a cereal plant on an induction medium comprising mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure callus formation,(b) culturing the callus on a series of media, said series comprising at least one medium and each medium comprises mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to insure differentiating to plantlets having shoots and roots at the completion of the series, and(c) culturing the plantlets on an establishment medium comprising mineral salts, vitamins and sucrose, whereby the plantlets are established so that they can be transplanted to soil.
Abstract: A control system for causing a vehicle, such as a ship, to follow a track comprising track segments TS1, TS2 whose position and heading are specified, in accordance with a weighted function of track error and heading error. On changing from following a track segment TS1 to the next segment TS2 at P1 the vehicle will overshoot, as shown by curve A. The invention provides for the weighting factor for the heading to be temporarily increased when the vehicle changes track segments, thus reducing the overshoot as shown by curve B. A further improvement, indicated by curve C, is obtained by fixing the changeover point at P2, in advance of the track segment intersection, the amount of the advance being a function of vehicle characteristics and speed.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the regeneration of corn. The process comprises the steps of:(a) culturing tissue obtained from a corn plant on a first medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure callus formation;(b) subculturing the calli on a second medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure callus maintenance;(c) subculturing the calli on a third medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficient to ensure shoot and root formation; and(d) optionally subculturing said shoots on a fourth medium which comprises mineral salts, vitamins, sucrose and a hormone in an amount sufficent to ensure plantlet maturation including additional root formation, whereby plants are obtained.
Abstract: Compositions and methods are used for reducing the permeability of high fluid permeability segments of underground strata, the compositions being injected into the high permeability segments in liquid form and there gelled to reduce the permeability of the segments. A first group of compositions has a pH of at least 4 and comprises a sulfited derivative of a tannin extract together with furfural, formaldehyde or a formaldehyde derivative. The second group of compositions comprises furfural and a gellable vegetable material which can be a tannin extract, a sulfited derivative of a tannin extract, a catechin, an alkaline extract of a coniferous bark or a lignin or sulfonated lignin derivative.

Abstract: A conveyor device has two endless conveyor belts extending in alignment and advancing in the same direction of (X--X), the adjacent ends of the belts being oriented diagonally with respect to the direction. During transfer between the two belts the products gradually abandon the first belt and pass gradually onto the second belt. This avoids any stumbling of the products, even when these are of narrow and elongate form.
