  • Patent number: 4680082
Abstract: A label applicator is disclosed for receiving pressure-sensitive labels which have been peeled from a backing strip and for applying the labels to a desired surface. The tendency of the labels to bunch or wrinkle as they are delivered to the applicator face is avoided by causing the labels to bow or curve outward slightly from the plane of the face plate, with the bowing or curvature occurring across the width of the label in a direction transverse to the feed direction. The bowing increases the longitudinal stiffness of the label in the feed direction, and allows the label to be pushed across the applicator face without bunching or wrinkling even when relatively long and narrow labels are employed.

  • Patent number: 4677076
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for determining water in samples containing water. This process is characterized in that a solvatochromic compound is added to a solution or dispersion of the sample in a solvent or directly to the liquid sample, the solvatochromism band .lambda..sub.max in the UV-vis-spectrum is determined, the E.sub.T -value (molar excitation energy) of the solvatochromic compound is calculated and the water concentration is determined in accordance with the following equation:c.sub.H.sbsb.2.sub.O =C*exp(E.sub.T /E.sub.D -E.sub.T.sup.o /E.sub.D)-c* (1)in whichE.sub.T is the molar excitation energy of the solvatochromic compound,E.sub.T.sup.o is the E.sub.T -value of the pure anhydrous solvent,c* and E.sub.D are empirical parameters which may be taken from Tables or empirically determined.

  • Patent number: 4671869
Abstract: A filter device suitable for use in cleaning dampening water used in an offset press. The filter device has a tank in which are defined three sections: a stirring tank section, a floating tank section and a discharging tank section. The floating tank section and the discharging tank section are communicated with each other through a passage at their lower regions. The passage is adapted to be selectively closed by a shut-off device which is operated periodically under the control of a timer. A floating contaminant removing opening es positioned above the water level in the floating tank section. The contaminated water is poured into the stirring tank section through a bubbling means so that contaminants are adsorbed by the bubbles. The bubbles adsorbing the contaminants are allowed to float in the upper region of water in the floating tank section.

  • Patent number: 4664052
Abstract: A control system for causing a vehicle, such as a ship, to follow a track comprising track segments TS1, TS2 whose position and heading are specified, in accordance with a weighted function of track error and heading error. On changing from following a track segment TS1 to the next segment TS2 at P1 the vehicle will overshoot, as shown by curve A. The invention provides for the weighting factor for the heading to be temporarily increased when the vehicle changes track segments, thus reducing the overshoot as shown by curve B. A further improvement, indicated by curve C, is obtained by fixing the changeover point at P2, in advance of the track segment intersection, the amount of the advance being a function of vehicle characteristics and speed.
