Abstract: The useful life of a catalyst being used in an engine exhaust system to lower the undesirable constituents in the exhaust gas of an engine being operated on gasoline containing a cyclopentadienyl manganese antiknock is greatly prolonged by providing an exhaust system having a plurality of baffles in the exhaust flow path upstream from the catalyst forming a tortuous flow path.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for extracting nickel, copper, cobalt and molybdenum from a complex ore containing copper, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, manganese and iron. The process features treatment of the ore with gaseous compound followed by leaching with an aqueous ammonia/ammonium salt solution into which is additionally introduced sulfite.
Abstract: Methylenebis(dicyclopentyl phenols) in which at least one cyclopentyl group is ortho to the phenolic hydroxy group are effective antioxidants in a broad range of organic materials including mineral and synthetic lubricating oil and polyolefins.

Abstract: High molecular weight N-hydrocarbyl-substituted quaternary ammonium salts in which the hydrocarbyl group has a molecular weight of from about 350-3000 such as a polybutene ammonium chloride are effective detergents and dispersants for gasoline and lubricating oils.
Abstract: Acetals can be transformed into useful products by reaction with carbon monoxide and hydrogen. For example, methylal can be converted to ethanol and .beta.-methoxyethanol. The reaction can be conducted in the presence of a catalyst system comprising cobalt, iodine and ruthenium.
Abstract: A dispersant-antiwear lubricating oil additive is made by reacting a high molecular weight hydrocarbon-substituted phenol with aldehyde and ammonia or amines having a reactive hydrogen atom to form a Mannich condensation product which is reacted with an alkylene oxide and P.sub.2 S.sub.5 to form the additive.
Abstract: Polystyrene and related polymers are rendered flame retardant by 2,3,5,6-tetrabromo-p-xylene-.alpha.,.alpha.'-diol. Tests of polystyrene containing the diol show a high degree of stability toward ultraviolet radiation.

Abstract: An improved internal combustion engine, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is described which features the use of a liquid-cooled heat-exchange device to cool the recirculated exhaust before it is fed into the intake system of said engine. A preferred system uses a condensate trap situated downstream of said heat-exchange device. Use of this system effects further reduction in nitrogen oxides (NO.sub.x) content of the exhaust.
Abstract: Gasoline compositions and additive mixtures of esters of 1,1,2-ethane tricarboxylic acid, in amount sufficient to alleviate the plugging of certain catalysts being used in an engine exhaust system to lower the amount of undesirable constituents in exhaust gas from an engine being operated on gasoline containing a cyclopentadienyl manganese antiknock.
Abstract: In the process for preparing a urethane, particularly an aromatic urethane, by the reaction of an organic nitro compound, particularly an aromatic nitro compound, carbon monoxide, and an organic hydroxy compound in the presence of a catalyst, the improvement which comprises employing as said catalyst rhodium oxide, particularly substantially amorphous rhodium oxide, and optionally conducting the reaction in a nitrilic solvent.
Abstract: In the process for preparing a diurethane, particularly an aromatic diurethane, by the reaction of an organic dinitro compound, particularly an aromatic dinitro compound, carbon monoxide, and an organic hydroxyl compound in the presence of a catalyst, the improvement which comprises employing as said catalyst rhodium oxide, particularly substantially amorphous rhodium oxide, and carrying out the reaction in two stages, the first stage being carried out at a first temperature and pressure and the second stage being carried out at a higher temperature and pressure, and optionally conducting the reaction in a nitrilic solvent.
Abstract: Bis-substituted phenols bridged through a carbon atom of an aliphatic carboxylic amide or ester are effective ashless dispersants for lubricating oil. Preferably, the phenols are substituted with a high molecular weight poly-alpha-olefin group.

Abstract: Alkylphenoxy alkanoic esters are made in high yield by reaction of a C.sub.50-200 alkylphenol with a halo-substituted alkanoic ester in the presence of a base. The reaction product contains little unreacted alkylphenol and is converted without separation to a reaction mixture containing mainly alkylphenoxy alkanoic amide by reaction with amines. The amide reaction mixture is an effective ashless dispersant for lubricating oil.

Abstract: Dialkylphosphites are made by adding PCl.sub.3 to a mixture of water and alkanol and distilling product from the resultant reaction mixture leaving a distillation residue. Alkanol is added to the residue and the mixture reacted at elevated temperature to yield additional dialkylphosphite.
Abstract: An ignition spark advance system for use with spark ignited internal combustion engines having an exhaust gas recycle system which includes EGR vacuum modulator means connected to and modulating an exhaust gas recycle valve. A conventional first vacuum actuated spark advance unit responsive to manifold vacuum signal cooperates with a second vacuum actuated spark advance unit responsive to EGR vacuum signal to advance the ignition spark. The second vacuum actuated spark advance unit provides additional spark advance during periods of lower intake manifold vacuum caused by exhaust gas recycle when the spark advance due to the first unit decreases.
Abstract: Compounds such as tetramethyl [(2,3,5-tetrabromo-p-phenylene)-dimethylene] diphosphonate are useful as flame retardants in polymers and resins such as unsaturated polyesters and polyester fibers, polystyrene, and the like.
Abstract: A corrosion inhibitor, particularly suitable for use in pipelines used for the transportation of hydrocarbon fluids such as crude petroleum or refined petroleum fractions, comprises a mixture of (a) from 1.8 to 25 parts by weight dimerised unsaturated fatty acid and (b) 1 part by weight of an alkoxylated alkyl phenol and provides a WSIM number (as defined) of at least 60.
