Abstract: An environmentally acceptable and economically appealing method of inhibiting corrosion in brine solution systems wherein an aqueous brine solution is treated with gluconate or sorbitol.
Abstract: A method for cleaning plastic objects, especially for recycling, whereby liquid surfactant and liquid caustic are added as separate feed streams to water to create a cleaning solution. The concentrations of surfactant and caustic in the cleaning solution are periodically monitored so that the feed rates can be adjusted as necessary to maintain the optimum concentrations of each component.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically measuring the acidity of overhead water in an oil refinery, and dispensing a neutralizing agent into the refinery system at a rate responsive to that measurement. A sample of overhead water is collected and passed through a filter and cation exchange resin. The acid concentration of the sample is then automatically measured and a signal generated based on the concentration. The signal goes to a controller which controls the dispensation rate of neutralizing agent into the refinery system, thus reducing the acidity of the overhead water and limiting the corrosive effects of such acidity.

Abstract: Leakage of water from a boiler water system wherein steam is generated in a boiler from feedwater fed to the boiler, and the concentration of impurities in the boiler water within the boiler is reduced by withdrawing fractions thereof as blowdown while admitting additional feedwater as boiler-water makeup, is determined. The boiler has a concentration cycle value, the concentration cycle value being the average value of the concentration of an inert component in the blowdown at steady state (C.sub.F) divided by the concentration of the inert component in the feedwater (C.sub.I). The concentration of the inert component in the boiler at steady state varies from a high concentration C.sub.H, having a value that is higher than C.sub.F, to a low concentration C.sub.L, having a value between the (C.sub.I) and the (C.sub.F), within a time period.

Abstract: Siliceous materials produced by thermally treating Bayer process liquors are obtained in modified form when produced in the presence of ammonium, aromatic amine, and amine compounds, or compounds bearing ammonium, aromatic amine or amine moieties, such as N-propylamine, pyridine and tetramethylammonium hydroxide. These modified siliceous materials possess morphologies which confer upon them a reduced tendency to deposit on surfaces throughout the process.
