  • Patent number: 5319396
Abstract: An eye protective device having a frame member and a shield member attached to the frame member, the shield member having end portions which have tapered configurations. A pliant foam plastic member has a groove therein, the end portions of the groove having undercut tapered configurations which generally correspond to the tapered configurations of the end portions of the shield member. The tapered end portions of the groove engage the tapered end portions of the shield member so that the foam plastic member is held in place snugly against a wearer's face just above the eyes of the wearer during use so as to prevent perspiration or other debris from falling into the wearer's eyes.

  • Patent number: 5317497
Abstract: An inverter circuit for providing an AC driver voltage for a capacitive load from a DC input voltage. The circuit uses a pair of balanced transistors supplying a split primary winding of a transformer, a feedback winding thereof being coupled thereto to supply a feedback signal to the transistor inputs. Resistors are used to optimize inverter efficiency by adjusting transformer saturation and the DC bias of the drive transistors. A capacitor is connected across the two primaries to provide harmonic suppression an aid in starting the inverter. A second capacitor, connected from base to collector of the transistors opposite the transistor with DC bias being introduced, provides suppression of undesirable high frequencies which will occur if this capacitor is not present. The AC output is supplied from the secondary winding of the transformer.

  • Patent number: 5317555
Abstract: A magneto-optical disk has a recording layer whereon recorded bits are formed by the magnetic field modulation method and a readout layer whose axis of easy magnetization is parallel to the recording layer at room temperature, and varies to be perpendicular to the recording layer within a predetermined temperature range between room temperature and the Curie temperature. During reproduction of the recorded bits the first semiconductor laser emits a heating-use light beam to form the first light spot on the readout layer Thus, a ring-shaped region corresponding to the predetermined temperature range exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the recorded bits are copied from the recording layer onto the ring-shaped region. As the first light spot is shifted, the ring-shaped region as a readout window of recorded bits is also shifted.

  • Patent number: 5313830
Abstract: The specification discloses an apparatus for assessing the ingress of air into a steam system which includes a steam condenser having an exit, a vacuum pump arrangement for maintaining the exit under a partial vacuum, and pipework connecting the exit to the vacuum pump arrangement. A pitot probe is positioned at a first monitoring point in the pipework to sense the total dynamic and static pressure of the entire flow in that pipework. A second probe is positioned at a second monitoring point which is displaced from the first monitoring point and adjacent the exit from the condenser, to sense the static pressure and temperature at that second monitoring point. An indication of the amount of air flowing past said first monitoring point is derived from the total pressure, the static pressure and the temperature, which are measured at the first and second monitoring points.

  • Patent number: 5311490
Abstract: An optical disk drive which discriminates whether a light spot is incident on a groove or on an area therebetween by eliminating a pulse that appears in a binary envelope signal when the light spot passes a level section. The elimination is carried out based on an ODF section detecting signal, the ODF section detecting signal being a level section detecting signal which is produced by detecting a level section (ODF section) of the optical disk. The detection is carried out by differentiating an envelope signal, which is the envelope of an electric signal corresponding to the amount of light reflected from the optical disk. Accordingly, even if the optical disk in use has interrupted grooves, the optical head can be accurately moved to a desired track located on a land or on a groove.

  • Patent number: 5305326
Abstract: A method for handling data in a plurality of data storage disks having user data sectors and corresponding parity sectors, the method being used when the disks are being operated in a degraded mode wherein data in sectors of an inoperative user data disk are reconstructed from data in the corresponding sectors of the other user data disks and the corresponding parity entry. The reconstructed user data in a user data sector of the inoperative disk is written into the corresponding parity sector in place of the parity entry therein, before any new data is written into the corresponding sector of an operative disk. Information identifying the inoperative disk is written into a specified identification region of the parity disk to indicate that such operation has occurred. The new data is then written into the corresponding sector of the operative disk.

  • Patent number: 5303100
Abstract: A magnetic disk device having a floating-type magnetic head, for use with a disk-shaped recording medium having a sliding area for the floating-type magnetic head formed outside a recording area. The length in the disk radial direction of a suspension supporting the floating-type magnetic head is varied depending on individual magnetic disk devices. In another arrangement, a control means is provided for setting two reference values so that a radial position of the floating-type magnetic head detected by a detection section is compared with these reference values, and for alternating one of the preset reference values to the other reference value upon receiving a rotation stop signal. In still another arrangement, control means is provided, whereby a radial position for sliding of the floating-type magnetic head is randomly varied within the sliding area.

  • Patent number: 5301280
Abstract: A communication protocol available to any type module on the computer bus. Application programs are treated as clients or servers. A serveport is created in the server module. A client issues a connect request to the server identifying the serveport. The server assigns a N-slot TID capability to identify, describe and protect a storage location for receiving a start buffer from the client and sends the N-slot TID to the client to establish a connection. The start buffer includes a TID list which permits the client and server to reliably communicate back and forth. Once a connection has been established, data can be moved between the server and the client. High-level instructions and commands are sent as data through these connections. After the communication has been completed, the connection can be disconnected by the client or broken by the server.

  • Patent number: 5298988
Abstract: A technique for aligning features on opposite surfaces of a substrate by generating a fiducial image at an image plane and identifying the location of the image at a viewing device remote therefrom, e.g., a video display screen. The substrate is placed so that one surface thereof, on which a feature is to be placed in alignment with a corresponding feature already present on the other oppositely disposed surface, is at the image plane. The one surface has photoresist material thereon. With the fiducial image turned off, an image of the feature on the other oppositely disposed surface is presented at the viewing device and the substrate is moved in the image plane until the image of the feature at the viewing device is at the previously identified location of the fiducial image.
