    Abstract: The present invention relates to polymer compositions which are useful particularly as flow aids in coating resin formulations. In one embodiment, the polymer composition is prepared by reacting (A) at least one acrylic ester, vinyl monomer or mixtures thereof, provided the acrylic ester is not a hydroxyalkyl acrylate, (B) at least one monoester of an alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, and (C) at least one hydroxy-containing compound selected from hydroxyalkyl acrylates and compounds characterized by the formulaHOR*SH (IIIA)wherein R* is a hydrocarbylene group containing from 2 to about 10 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof.

    Abstract: A mar resistant, weldable zinc-coated metal substrate capable of sustaining the life of a copper-tipped electrode used in welding the substrate through a minimum of 2000 welds is achieved by applying a weldable primer coating composition to the metal, heating the primer composition to provide the desired dry coating, applying a protective coating composition over the primer coating in an amount sufficient to provide from about 50 to about 400 mg/ft.sup.2 of a dry film, and heating the protective coating composition to produce the dry film. Without the resin-based protective coating, the weldable primer is easily marred. The resin-based protective coating, which is from about 0.06 mil to about 0.13 mil thick, improves the mar resistance of the primer and enhances the corrosion resistance of the zinc-coated steel without interfering with the weldability of the primer. The primer contains from about 30 to about 60% of ferrophosphorus and from 0 to about 30% by weight zinc powder.

    Abstract: The use of aluminum sulfate to neutralize alkaline solutions yields a gelatinous precipitate. When neutralization of the solution causes other materials to precipitate along with the gel, filtration of the precipitated materials is very difficult because of the gel. The addition of water soluble magnesium, aluminum, and/or calcium salts as primary neutralizing agents for an alkaline stripper solution of a photoresin, followed by the acidification of the resulting slurry to a pH of from about 2 to about 3 gives a slurry of the precipitated resin which may be filtered quickly.

    Abstract: The combination of an ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer and a water soluble amine salt of a fatty acid is useful as a hydrophilic coating for the surfaces of fins in a heat exchanger. The exchanger is more efficient because the coating prevents the blockage of air flow by beads of condensed water which would otherwise build up in the narrow spaces between the fins.

    Abstract: Novolak resins are provided which are the condensation product of (a) a phenol, phenol derivative, or mixtures thereof, and (b) a mixture of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde precursor and (1) a monohydroxy aromatic aldehyde and wherein at least a portion of the hydroxyl groups thereof are esterified or (2) a mixture of at least one monohydroxy aromatic aldehyde and at least one non-hydroxylic aromatic aldehyde; the novolak resins having a hydroxyl number of from about 120 to about 180 grams of resin per equivalent of hydroxyl. The novolak resins are especially useful in positive photoresist formulations and have enhanced photospeed and film loss characteristics as well as improved thermal stability.

    Abstract: Low density mineral wool structural panels are manufactured by frothing a dilute aqueous dispersion of mineral wool, lightweight aggregate, binder and a small amount of amine-based cationic surfactant onto a non-woven scrim cover sheet, dewatering the mass and drying it. The froth is a mass of weakly resilient bubbles that rapidly dewater and burst to concentrate the solids in the mass. The bubbles are readily broken without loss of the voided structural configuration by a first application of brief pulses of high vacuum followed by further dewatering under vacuum and rapid drying by passing large volumes of air through the voided mass without collapse of the structure to result in lightweight structural mineral wool panels.

    Abstract: This invention comprises a suspended ceiling grid system having an adjustable compression strut installed between the grid members of the system and the building or construction superstructure which lies in a plane above the suspended ceiling. The adjustable compression strut stabilizes the ceiling system and prevents upward movement of the system such as might occur during a seismic shock or earthquake tremor. The compression strut comprises two co-axial, telescoping cylindrical strut members having a spring clip attached to the inner end of the inner strut member that allows the strut to be extended but not retracted. The compression strut is installed by simply holding it in position between the suspended ceiling grid and the superstructure and then extending the strut members until they are locked in place by the action of the spring clip.

    Abstract: An apparatus for texturing the surface of wet cast plastic acoustical composition during manufacture of acoustical tiles by use of spinning air rolls. In the apparatus, at least one hollow cylindrical roll that is perforated in a random manner is suspended over the surface of wet cast plastic acoustical composition, the roll being driven by a motor. The interior of the roll is preferably provided with a perforated air tube or pipeline, from which issues uniform air pressurization of the spinning roll vessel. By providing differential speed of the roll in contrast to the line speed of the wet plastic composition and different air pressurization of the roll, a wide variety of textures may be produced on the surface of the wet plastic acoustical composition.

    Abstract: This invention relates to the manufacture of hydroxylapatite in a through-solution process wherein monobasic calcium phosphate is reacted with a calcium hydroxide solution. In a preferred embodiment, an acidic premix is formed by reacting phosphoric acid and calcium hydroxide with high shear agitation in a first stage, and thereafter reacting the acidic premix with a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide also under high shear agitation in a second stage. The second stage reaction is carried out in an alkaline solution by carefully metering the acid premix into the calcium hydroxide solution whereby the pH of the solution is maintained above 11 until the reaction is near completion. It is particularly preferred to use a stoichiometric portion of calcium hydroxide in carrying out the reactions. After the hydroxylapatite precipitate is recovered, it may be sintered at a temperature between about 700.degree. C. and 1100.degree. C. for about 5 to 30 minutes to form a crystalline hydroxylapatite.

    Abstract: The twisting of studs within the ceiling and floor rails of a partition is prevented by a quickly installable stud clip which may be moved along the rail to its desired position before being fastened to the rail and stud.The channel form top rail in this system has a pair of longitudinal slots just below the web which are defined by inwardly extending longitudinal tracks which are parallel to the web. The stud clip has a base plate from whose central portion a stud-engaging standard depends at a right angle. On the lateral portions of the plate there are skid elements which fit into the slots and engage the tracks. Extending from one lateral portion of the plate beyond the plane of the standard is a relatively narrow locking tab which is in edgewise abutment with a track. The abutment of the locking tab with the track prevents rotation of the stud clip within the rail.

    Abstract: Apparatus and method for belt transfer printing of nonflat surfaces of porous articles wherein the printing of the article by a first region of the belt is carried out substantially simultaneously with the inking of a second region of the belt. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus comprises an endless belt with a screen printing device disposed along a first run of the belt and a vacuum workpiece support box disposed along a second run of the belt with an opposed sealing frame. A workpiece is loaded in the vacuum box, a vacuum is created through the workpiece to draw a pattern carrying region into printing contact with the workpiece surface while another pattern is being inked onto a second region of the belt. The workpiece is replaced with a second workpiece and the second region of the belt is advanced into registration with the second workpiece.

    Abstract: An oil well drilling fluid containing mineral fibers which have been coated individually with a dispersant is better able to plug voids and fractures in the rock being drilled than those of the prior art because the mineral fibers are thoroughly dispersed. The fluid is substantially free of nodulated fibers. A dispersant such as a polyethoxylated quaternary ammonium salt is added to a stream of air which attenuates streams of molten slag into fibers. The fibers are uniformly coated with the dispersant and nodules thereof uravel easily when placed in a drilling fluid.
