  • Patent number: 4169630
Abstract: A one-piece sheet metal nut particularly adapted to be clamped against a plastic workpiece to accommodate any cold flow of the plastic under the clamping force without appreciably reducing the tension in the joint thus created. The nut incorporates an inner internally threaded body integrally connected by an upper top wall to an outer body. The lower region of the outer body is frustoconical and adapted to engage a mating frustoconical surface in the plastic with the uppermost extremities of the nut incorporating an axially compressible spring means permitting portions of the sheet metal nut to move longitudinally relative to one another, which, in conjunction with the broad surface contact between frustoconical surfaces, overcomes any cold flow effect.

  • Patent number: 4169691
Abstract: A machine which may be used to either check or to machine the profile of an orbiting star gear for a gerotor type of fluid motor or pump is disclosed. The profile of a star gear is traced due to the interaction of a slide that carries a sensor, or a machining tool, in a back and forth direction toward and away from the star gear and in a second direction transverse to this back and forth direction with respect to a frame member. The slide is driven by an eccentric disc, at a rate which is determined in accordance with the number of teeth on the specific star gear in question. The combined motion of the star gear and the two slides causes the sensor, or the machining tool, to trace out the profile of the desired star gear for the purpose of either checking its profile, or of machining a new gear. A spring member is connected to the frame member to allow the frame member to move in a transverse direction but without rotation.

  • Patent number: 4166285
Abstract: An electrical capacitor is formed which relies on a thin dielectric layer which is metallized on both sides to provide electrode areas to provide the major part of the capacitance of the capacitor. An unmetallized margin area runs along one side of the dielectric layer along one longitudinal edge of the dielectric layer and an unmetallized margin area runs along the other side of the dielectric layer along the opposite longitudinal edge dimension of the dielectric layer. A pleated capacitor section is formed by pleating, or folding, the dielectric layer along its longitudinal dimension. This pleated capacitor segment is incorporated into an initial portion of the capacitor formed of two metal foil electrodes and a separating dielectric layer which are wound about the leads of the capacitor.

  • Patent number: 4156395
Abstract: A high-speed planting method and machine in which a plurality of plants are provided in a plurality of webs. The webs are flexible and each web carries a plurality of plants fixed in an array of a plurality of adjacent rows and substantially perpendicular ranks. In the method and machine, each web is bent in a curve about an axis parallel to the ranks of plants, and during the bending operation each leading rank of plants is ejected from the web as a group. Concurrently with that operation, each removed rank of plants is conveyed toward the ground, and each plant in each conveyed rank is successively set into the ground in spaced relation along a line.

  • Patent number: 4156223
Abstract: An improved positional transducer is disclosed which utilizes an elongated, hollow, cylindrical tube of a magnetically saturable material, a sense wire that runs through the tube parallel to its elongated axis and a pair of elongated, generally rectangular shaped magnets of opposite polarity which are closely positioned adjacent diametrically opposite exterior portions of the tube. As the magnets move over in the tube, they provide substantially complete saturation of the tube in the portion over which they extend while the remaining portion of the tube remains unsaturated thereby giving a linear indication of the position of the magnets with respect to the tube. In the improved version, shown herein, adjustments of the electrical slope (volts/inches of travel) are achieved by a slot cut through the wall of the tube in the direction of the tube's length.
