  • Patent number: 6296385
Abstract: A probe for measuring the viscosity and/or temperature of high temperature liquids, such as molten metals, glass and similar materials comprises a rod which is an acoustical waveguide through which a transducer emits an ultrasonic signal through one end of the probe, and which is reflected from (a) a notch or slit or an interface between two materials of the probe and (b) from the other end of the probe which is in contact with the hot liquid or hot melt, and is detected by the same transducer at the signal emission end. To avoid the harmful effects of introducing a thermally conductive heat sink into the melt, the probe is made of relatively thermally insulative (non-heat-conductive) refractory material. The time between signal emission and reflection, and the amplitude of reflections, are compared against calibration curves to obtain temperature and viscosity values.

  • Patent number: 6293439
Abstract: A high pressure rotary valve including a housing with inlet and outlet openings and a rotor and blade assembly within the housing for moving flowable solid material through the valve. The chamber containing the rotor assembly is defined between a pair of shrouds which move relative to a wall portion of the housing. The periphery of each shroud is ground and hard coated and this periphery is engaged by a first lip seal or multiple thereof supported by the housing. An end plate is located around the rotor shaft at each end of the housing and second lip seals engage ground and hard coated surfaces of the rotor shaft. Pockets defined between the shrouds and the end plates are adapted to be pressurized to create a back pressure resisting movement of material out of the housing chamber in the direction of the rotor shaft. Angular contact bearings support the rotating shaft with respect to the housing.

  • Patent number: 6294751
Abstract: A method of electrically welding a part such as a bolt around a bore of a composite sheet comprising an intermediate layer of a substantially insulating material disposed between two metal layers. Said sheet is pre-heated in the vicinity of said bore in order to remove said substantially insulating material therefrom, after which said part is welded onto said sheet by a conventional resistance spot welding method. Preferably, said pre-heating operation is conducted by passing an electric current between a counter-electrode applied to the sheet from the same side as said part to be welded, in the vicinity of said bore, and an electrode applied on said part to be welded.

  • Patent number: 6282976
Abstract: A rotatable handgrip twistshifter (10) mountable coaxially about a bicycle handlebar (20) that abruptly or discontinuously increases the mechanical advantage when shifting a front derailleur from a smaller to a larger chainring. A control cable (86) is slidably connected to the handgrip (12) such that during rotation of the handgrip (12) to effect gear shifts from the middle to larger chainrings of a triple chainring crankshaft (40, 41, 42), the cable (86) is abruptly dropped toward the handgrip axis of rotation thereby increasing the mechanical advantage or leverage of the shifter (10). Alternatively, the control cable (86) is slidably connected to the pivot arm (114) of a front derailleur such that during rotation of the handgrip (12) the cable (86) is deflected away from the derailleur pivot axis (207), likewise, increasing the mechanical advantage of the derailleur.
