    Abstract: Copolymers of keto dicarboxylates are provided which have the following general formula ##STR1## WHERE Y is one or more comonomers; n averages at least 2; p is at least 1; and M is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal, ammonium, alkyl groups having 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, and alkanol amine groups having 1 to about 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. Such copolymers are useful as detergent builders to replace sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) in detergent formulations. The copolymers are stable under laundry use conditions, but depolymerize in acid media, making the fragments more readily biodegradable in waste streams.

    Abstract: Powdered detergent compositions containing a surfactant, fillers, builders and the like, can be prepared by removing water from the detergent composition to form the powder. Frequently, such powdered detergent compositions are hygroscopic and lose the free-flowing characteristics upon storage. According to the present invention, a detergent composition which comprises at least 5 percent by weight of a mixture of alkyl benzene sulfonates wherein greater than 55 mole percent of the alkyl benzene sulfonates have alkyl chains of greater than 11 carbon atoms, the alkyl chains having 12 or more carbon atoms have a 2-phenyl content greater than 60 percent of the total 2-phenyl content, along with other detergent ingredients are provided which provides a free-flowing dry composition that is less hygroscopic than prior art products.

    Abstract: The alkali metal salts of imidobis sulfuric acid, particularly the trisodium salt, is effective in heavy duty laundry detergent compositions by reducing the damaging effects of chlorine-containing bleaches on the fabric while minimizing the loss in effectiveness of the bleach in removing stains from the soiled fabric. Accordingly, a detergent composition is provided which comprises, based on the total weight of the composition, at least 5 percent by weight of a surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic, nonionic, zwitterionic, ampholytic and amphoteric surfactants, at least 5 percent by weight of a builder, and a bleach-damage mitigating amount of trisodium imidobis sulfate, tripotassium imidobis sulfate or mixtures thereof. A process for washing soiled fabrics is also provided comprising contacting the fabrics with a detergent, a chlorine-containing bleach, and a bleach-damage mitigating amount of the alkali metal imidobis sulfate.
