  • Patent number: 6433911
Abstract: A micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems (MOEMS) modulator based on the phenomenon of frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR). The modulator effects amplitude and phase modulation at the boundary of a waveguide. Wavelength-specific switching is achieved by spatially separating the wavelength channels by dispersing a broadband input signal into its wavelength components through a grating. In exemplary embodiments, an array of micro-fabricated actuators is used to switch or modulate wavelengths individually. Applications include wavelength and space-resolved phase and amplitude modulation of optical beams, and re-configurable add/drop switching of dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) optical communication signals.

  • Patent number: 6429637
Abstract: An electronic power meter for metering the consumption of electrical energy on power lines includes phase compensation on current transformers, whereby the acquisition of one of the two samples for the current signals is delayed and time shifted averaged, such that the average of the two signals provides a compensated signal. The amount of delay is determined from the phase lag the current transformers exhibit during the process of calibration for phase compensation. The amount of compensation that is applied varies with current, thus compensation for the non-linearity in the phase shift for the current transformers. The degree of non-linearity is computed which results in only two variables that define the phase lag at higher current and the degree of non-linearity. The technique helps in using inexpensive current transformers in the meter.

  • Patent number: 6415489
Abstract: A tool is disclosed for axially urging a bearing assembly into and out of a seated position on the neck of a roll in a rolling mill. The tool includes a piston surrounded by a cylinder. The piston is removably fixed to the roll neck and is configured to internally subdivide the cylinder into first and second chambers. Fluid conduits are arranged to alternatively pressurize the first and second chambers to alternatively shift the cylinder with respect to the thus fixed piston in opposite first and second directions. Movement of the cylinder in the first direction urges the bearing assembly into its seated position, and movement of the cylinder in the opposite second direction dislodges the bearing assembly from its seated position.

  • Patent number: 6414327
Abstract: A method and apparatus for ion beam generation in which acceleration of an ion beam in a first accelerating tube to a high voltage terminal, followed by transport of the beam through the terminal without significant charge changing, and deceleration of the beam substantially to ground potential in a second accelerating tube. Since the terminal is maintained at high voltage, the beam optical characteristics between the ion source and the terminal are identical to those of normal tandem operation. The optical elements of the injector and accelerator beamline can therefore be adjusted to produce an focused beam envelope in the high voltage terminal, allowing the beam to propagate efficiently through an empty stripper canal. Since the beam, does not undergo a charge change in the terminal, it is decelerated in the second tandem accelerating tube. Since the beam propagates through the accelerator at energies higher than the injection energy, expansion of the beam due to space charge and emittance is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6411752
Abstract: Optical resonators are vertically coupled on top of bus waveguides, and are separated from the waveguides by a buffer layer of arbitrary thickness. The vertical arrangement eliminates the need for etching fine gaps to separate the rings and guides, and reduces the alignment sensitivity between the desired position of the resonator and bus waveguides by a significant degree. The resonator and bus waveguides lie in different vertical layers, and each can therefore be optimized independently. A ring resonator can be optimized for higher index contrast in the plane, small size, and low bending loss, while the bus waveguides can be designed to have lower index contrast in the plane, low propagation losses, and dimensions that make them suitable for matching to optical fibers. The waveguides can also have any lateral placement underneath the ring resonators and are not restricted by the placement of the rings.

  • Patent number: 6411240
Abstract: An amplifier has a first amplifier stage with a first input terminal to which an input signal is applied and with an output terminal that is connected to an input terminal of a second amplifier stage located downstream. The second amplifier stage provides an output signal that is fed back to a second input terminal of the first amplifier stage through a feedback path, which preferably contains a passive network. The amplification of this combination of the first and second amplifier stages with feedback depends essentially on the parameters of the network in the feedback path. The amplifier according to the invention also has a noise source that is connected in parallel with the first amplifier stage, and is also connected to the input terminal of the second amplifier stage. The level of a signal component at the output of the second amplifier stage depends on the parameters of the network in the feedback branch and the amplification of the first amplifier stage.
