  • Patent number: 6363878
Abstract: A labeling system to ensure that blood products are compatible with a patient's blood type. A blood product housing, which is attached to a blood product, comprises a plurality of block-like projections and recesses corresponding to the antigens/antibody characteristics of a blood product. A patient housing, secured to the patient, comprises a plurality of mirror image three-dimensional block-like projections and recesses corresponding to the antigen/antibody characteristics of the patient's blood. If the blocks and recesses of the housings mate and seat to one another this confirms the blood product is compatible with the blood of the patient. If the blocks and recesses of the housings do not mate and seat to one another this confirms the blood product is not compatible with the blood of the patient.

  • Patent number: 6358283
Abstract: An implantable device for lengthening and correcting malpositions of skeletal bones, which device has an elongate shape comprising a first end, a second end, a length dimension and a cross-sectional dimension. The device further comprises a lengthening body for bringing the first and second ends into displacement from each other to a predetermined distance between each other after an activation. Thereby, the lengthening body comprises an absorbent body, which is arranged for bringing the first and second ends to the predetermined distance by means of a controlled swelling after the activation, while the length dimension increases more than the cross-sectional dimension. The implantable device can advantageously be implemented for lengthening and also for correcting rotational and angular malpositions of skeletal bones, for example in connection with stabilizing fractures, post-traumatic bone defects, bone shortenings, malpositions, congenital malformations, and bone defects after tumor surgery.

  • Patent number: 6346196
Abstract: A slowly rotating separation chamber with an oscillating axial magnetic field gradient created by an alternating current solenoid superimposed on a steady radial gradient in a horizontal chamber is used as part of a flow-through multiunit colloidal magnetic affinity separation device including magnets. The field-gradient induced microscale particle motion, as well as particle resuspension by chamber rotation, significantly enhances particle-target contact without generating damaging shear forces. Chamber rotation also minimizes sedimentation of non-neutrally buoyant magnetic particles. The alternating current solenoid are a series of coils arranged along the axial flow direction, a single chamber is utilized as a flow-through multistage separation device, leading to a major increase in volume and reduced “down” times as compared to batch equipment.

  • Patent number: 6346273
Abstract: A process for solubilizing in water and in aqueous vehicles sparingly water-soluble pharmaceutically active substances, comprising the following operations: 1) forming a complex of the pharmaceutically active substance with a pharmaceutically acceptable non-ionic polymer capable of forming complexes with the substance, and isolating the complex in solid form; 2) dissolving again the thus obtained complex in an aqueous medium by means of a pharmaceutically acceptable surfactant. The method allows to markedly increase the water-solubility of pharmaceutically active organic compounds which are intrinsically poorly or negligibly soluble in water, in order to obtain preparations that are stable in aqueous solution and contain therapeutically and commercially useful concentrations of active ingredient.

  • Patent number: 6347273
Abstract: The present invention refers to a method to control the speed of a vehicle by means of a cruise control device, essentially by arranging the cruise control device in at least one of: a cruise control state (13), in which the speed of the vehicle is controlled preferably with regard to a selected constant speed (Vdet), a retardation state (14), in which the speed of the vehicle (Vcurr) is controlled towards a determined constant speed (Vdet), an acceleration state (15), in which the speed alteration is achieved preferably manually, an inactive state (16), in which the system is temporary or permanently switched off, and a distance control state (17), in which substantially a distance of the vehicle to a vehicle ahead is controlled. The method further comprises the step of arranging the cruise control in a temporary state (18), in which a speed (Vcurr) at transition time to this state is maintained.

  • Patent number: 6347132
Abstract: An x-ray inspection system for automatically detecting nuclear weapons materials generates a high energy x-ray fan beam or a traveling x-ray pencil beam that traverses an object under inspection. An x-ray detector detects x-ray energy that passes through the object and provides a detected signal indicative thereof. The detected signal is processed to detect the presence of an area of very high x-ray attenuation within the object under inspection, which is indicative of nuclear weapons materials. Because of the high atomic number (Z) and high density of nuclear weapons materials Uranium and Plutonium, both of these materials attenuate (i.e., absorb) incident x-rays significantly more than ordinary materials. That is, very high Z materials such as nuclear weapons materials, produce no x-rays outside of their block of material because the x-rays are self absorbed within the very high Z materials.

  • Patent number: 6335656
Abstract: A direct conversion receiver having a homodyning section fed by a received radio frequency signal having a carrier frequency and reference signal having the carrier frequency; and a filter coupled to the monodyning section. The filter includes a plurality of serially coupled high pass filter stages. The high pass filter section acts as a DC offset correction loop that eliminates the serial effect of many amplifier sections on DC offsets arising within components, while maintaining a sufficiently low cutoff frequency to avoid adversely impacting information integrity at higher frequencies. The high pass filter sections also enable the integration of the needed capacitors, thus minimizing external components and connections. Each filter stage includes an amplifier and a low pass filter coupled in a negative feedback arrangement with the amplifier. Each low pass filter is adapted to have the cutoff frequency thereof switch from an initial high cutoff frequency to a subsequent lower cutoff frequency.

  • Patent number: 6331219
Abstract: A system for cooling a hot rolled steel product at a retarded cooling rate comprises a laying head for forming the product into a continuous series of rings. A conveyor receives the rings from the laying head at a receiving station and transports the rings in a non-concentric overlapping pattern through a cooling zone to a reforming station at which the rings are delivered from the conveyor and gathered into upstanding coils. The rings are covered with a granular insulation material while being transported through the cooling zone.

  • Patent number: 6330939
Abstract: There is a large difference in frequency dependent, complex electrical permittivity between genuine and counterfeit documents, including paper currency. Genuine bills have a substantially different complex permittivity which is distinct from the permittivity of counterfeit bills. The invention broadly measures the complex permittivity, &egr;, of the ‘paper’ bills to determine if the bill(s) is genuine or counterfeit. In one aspect, the present invention comprises a device and method for determining the genuineness of a document by measuring the complex permittivity based on the frequency dependent dielectric properties of the document. The complex electric permittivity of a dielectric material is typically read by measuring complex impedance using a capacitor to sense material properties. The document may include an enhanced region comprising an additive that establishes a known permittivity in the enhanced region.
