  • Patent number: 6458277
Abstract: The invention uses the electro-kinetic principle for a method for the cleaning of materials contaminated with heavy metals, whereby use is made of an apparatus comprising two charge-selective ion-exchange membranes with different charges combined with an inner and an outer electrolyte solution chambers which are separated by the membranes which serve a blocking function. A surprisingly good degree of removal is achieved, particularly in relation to the current consumption, and at the same time the heavy metals can be precipitated in a separate vessel such that they can be reused.

  • Patent number: 6450227
Abstract: A station for checking labels, in particular auto-adhesive labels, in a labeling machine, cooperates with a control unit and has a working group for removing defective labels from a label carrier band. The working group has a knurled roller idling on a rotation axis and disposed inside a related windowed casing freely supported by an axle of the knurled roller. The windowed casing has a vertical plate with upstream and downstream edges. A tightening roller, also idling on a rotation axis, guides the band in cooperation with the adjacent working group, while a collecting group cooperates with the working group for collecting defective labels removed from the band. The windowed casing is operated, on command from the control unit, by an actuator and moves from a rest configuration, with the band completely guided by the knurled roller and tightening roller, to a working configuration, with the band engaged by the downstream edge of the plate.

  • Patent number: 6443406
Abstract: In order to make it easier to mount for instance playground equipment comprising a tube construction which is anchored to a base the subject invention offers a simplification by incorporating a means to facilitate the longitudinal adjustment of the grooves in relation to the base. This means comprises a tube piece (2) extending in the tube (1), which tube piece is anchored to the base and which is configured with longitudinal folds for the formation of outwardly open channels (4). In these channels (4) a wedge element (3) is inserted which by means of bolts (6) through the tube (1) can tighten the wedge and due to the cross sectional shape of the grooves cause the tube piece (2) to expand so that it squeezes against the inside of the tube (1). In this manner the tube (1) can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction in connection with both the mounting and the subsequent adjustment.

  • Patent number: 6429431
Abstract: A medical diagnostic apparatus includes a carrier body, a plurality of rigid substrates each bearing at least one solid-state gamma ray sensor, the substrates being attached to the carrier body, and a computer operatively connected to the sensors for receiving signals therefrom and deriving information about location and size of a source of radioactivity in the patient. The carrier body enables disposition of different gamma ray sensors on different sides of the patient so that the sensors at least partially surround the patient. In an associated medical diagnostic method, a chemical composition containing a radioactive isotope is administered to a patient. A plurality of solid-state sensors sensitive to gamma rays generated by radioactive decay of the isotope are subsequently disposed about the patient, and signals from the sensors are conducted to a computer, which is then operated to derive information about location and size of a source of radioactivity in the patient.

  • Patent number: 6425860
Abstract: A method for treating a patient comprises selecting a zone of a patient's iris to be treated, monitoring the patient's eye to determine a position of the selected zone, and, in accordance with the determined position of the zone, directing energy of a predetermined type and a predetermined magnitude toward the zone. The iris zone is selected in part by automatically scanning the patient's iris to generate a signal encoding patterns in the iris, and automatically comparing pattern data in the signal with previously stored pattern data to derive diagnostic information pertaining to the individual patient. The diagnosis and treatment selection are made by a computer programmed with statistical data correlating iris patterns of hue and light or darkness levels with physiological states of different organs and with possible treatments to counter undersirable conditions.
