  • Patent number: 8232926
Abstract: There is provided a mobile wireless device capable of preventing antenna characteristics from degrading by feeding electric power at a position hardly affected by a human body such as a hand or other body part. In the mobile wireless device, a first circuit board (101) is provided on a first chassis (110) and has a ground layer; a second circuit board (105) is provided on a second chassis (120) and has a ground layer. A ground terminal of a wireless portion (104) is connected to the ground layer of the first circuit board (101) at the same voltage level and is also electrically connected through the wireless portion (104) to a matching circuit (103). The ground layer of the second circuit board (105) is electrically connected to a hinge conducting portion (106) by electrostatic capacitance coupling. The hinge conducting portion (106) is connected through a third conduction portion (107) to a board connection portion (102) and feeds power to the wireless portion through the matching circuit (103).

  • Patent number: 8233441
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for configuring a context for a connection delivering a packet data service to a mobile terminal via a target wireless access network. The mobile terminal is initially connected to an originating wireless access network and the packet data service may be provided to the mobile terminal via the originating wireless network. Moreover, the invention provides an authentication server, a packet data gateway and a packet data service support node which participate in the context configuration method. To provide a method that allows establishing connection for packet service delivery to a mobile terminal from a wireless access network, as for example a UMTS, as fast as possible the invention suggests to preconfigure service provision of the packet data service via the target wireless access network by establishing a context prior to the mobile terminal connecting to the target wireless access network.

  • Patent number: 8234081
Abstract: A system measures the strain of an object. The system includes a laser source for generating an output radiation, a strainable optical fiber having first and second facets, and means for calculating a measure of a strain of the optical fiber. The first facet is coupled to the laser source to receive the output radiation and transmit a guided radiation over the optical fiber towards the second facet. The second facet is adapted to receive the guided radiation and to reflect a corresponding reflected radiation towards the first facet. The laser source is a self-mixing type adapted to receive at least part of the reflected radiation and to mix the output radiation with the received radiation. The calculating means calculate the measure of the strain of the optical fiber based on a self-mixing effect in the laser source that is caused by the linear displacement of the second section.

  • Patent number: 8230798
Abstract: The present invention concerns a Magnus rotor comprising a drive and a control means which controls the drive in such a way that the Magnus rotor attains a peripheral speed which is greater than the mean wind speed by a factor ?. In addition the present invention concerns a method of operating a Magnus rotor comprising a drive which causes the Magnus rotor to rotate, and a control means, as well as a ship. In order better to utilize the action of the Magnus rotor than occurs in the state of the art, ? is greater than 4. In that respect the present invention is based on the realization that the assumption that, above a high-speed factor of four, there would no longer be a significant increase in the lift coefficient, which above all is in relation to the drive power to be used, is based on a technical prejudice. It was possible to empirically ascertain that an increase in the high-speed factor leads to a significantly higher lift coefficient.

  • Patent number: 8228688
Abstract: A device is at least partially contained within a shielded enclosure formed by a first material that has a high thermal conductivity and plated with a second material that is superconductive below a critical temperature. An exterior of the shielded enclosure is at least partially wound by a compensation coil that is coupled to a current source. One or more measurement devices are responsive to magnetic fields in close proximity to the device, allowing compensation by controlling current to the compensation coil. Thus, magnetic shielding may be provided by compensation fields that may be trapped within the shielded enclosure when the system is cooled below the critical temperature of the second material. Radiation shielding may be provided by cooling the shielded enclosure to a temperature that is approximately equal to the temperature of the device.

  • Patent number: 8230050
Abstract: Techniques are described for providing users with access to computer networks, such as to enable users to interact with a remote configurable network service in order to create and configure computer networks that are provided by the configurable network service for use by the users. Computer networks provided by the configurable network service may be configured to be private computer networks that are accessible only by the users who create them, and may each be created and configured by a client of the configurable network service to be an extension to an existing computer network of the client, such as a private computer network extension to an existing private computer network of the client. If so, secure private access between an existing computer network and new computer network extension that is being provided may be enabled using one or more VPN connections or other private access mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 8228312
Abstract: A position detecting device includes a position indicator (2), a first detection section (13) (e.g., an electrostatic capacity type detection section) having a substantially flat shape, and a second detection section (14) (e.g., an electromagnetic induction type detection section). The position indicator (2) has a coil (27). The first detection section (13) has, on one surface thereof, detection electrodes (15) for detecting a capacitance between itself and a human body part. The second detection section (14) is provided with loop coils (24) for detecting a magnetic flux G. Further, each of the detection electrodes (15) has a substantially flat shape, and is provided with at least one slit (19) extending from the outer edge to the inside. With such a configuration, not only can degradation of detection accuracy of the first detection section be prevented or suppressed, but also degradation of detection accuracy of the second detection section can be prevented or suppressed.

  • Patent number: 8226348
Abstract: The invention refers to the field of wind power engineering, particularly to the vertical axis rotor-type wind turbines, which can be used for drive of electric generators or other using equipment of mechanical energy. The rotor-type wind turbine contains a central vertical shaft, mounted in a hollow elongated supporting column, and rotor structure, comprising two lattice-type blocks with power elements—the lattice-type stacks of aerodynamic blades. Each of the lattice-type blocks is carried by two corresponding lattice-type arms. When using the wind turbine two-block structure, the blocks are positioned by 180° to each other. The end parts of the aerodynamic lattice-type blades in blade blocks are fastened in relevant upper and lower shroud flanges.
