  • Patent number: 5880058
Abstract: A process is provided which comprises using a catalyst comprises a rare earth element supported on an inorganic heat-resisting carrier, when a monoethanolamine is selectively prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide with ammonia in a liquid phase. This catalyst has excellent monoalkanolamine selectivity and heat resistance; and therefore, even when the ratio of ammonia to the alkylene oxide is lower compared with cases where other catalysts are used, an equal or more amount of the monoalkanolamine can be formed, and thus the recovery cost of the unreacted ammonia is reduced. Further, since the total amount of the feed raw materials is reduced, apparatuses for the reaction system and recovery system can be made smaller, and thus the cost of equipment is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5872288
Abstract: The present invention provides a process for producing (meth)acrylic acid by gas-phase catalytic oxidation, which comprises cooling and condensing a (meth)acrylic acid-containing reaction product gas to obtain a crude aqueous (meth)acrylic acid solution; cooling the aqueous solution to deposit the impurities contained in the aqueous solution, as solid matter; separating the solid matter; and then extracting and separating (meth)acrylic acid from the purified aqueous (meth)acrylic acid solution obtained. Unlike the conventional processes in which (meth)acrylic acid is extracted and separated from a crude aqueous (meth)acrylic acid solution, the present process can avoid various troubles caused by the impurities contained in the crude aqueous (meth)acrylic acid solution, for example, generation of scum and the like, and therefore can produce (meth)acrylic acid at a higher purity than in the conventional processes.

  • Patent number: 5864232
Abstract: An apparatus for analyzing anomalies such as cracks, corrosion and the like in a pipeline wall is provided. The apparatus is formed of one or more cylindrical body sections. A series of magnetizing units are mounted around the circumference of the body. Each magnetizing unit is formed by a backing bar, brushes which are capable of inducing a magnetic field, sensors which are capable of measuring magnetic flux leakage caused by anomalies in the wall and bearing wheels which reduce wear on the brushes and sensors. The backing bar is flexibly mounted on the body so that it can follow the contour of the pipeline wall as the apparatus moves through the pipeline. The backing bar has steel-containing brushes mounted on either end atop magnets of opposite polarities such that a magnetic field may be transmitted to the pipeline wall. The brushes are ideally formed by steel cables encased in polyurethane and mounted on a steel shell. The sensors are mounted in the central part of the backing bar, between the brushes.
