Patent number: 5536372Abstract: The invention relates to a twin-wire web former for a paper machine wherein a covering wire and a carrying wire form a twin-wire forming zone between them. A method for dewatering a web is also disclosed. In the invention, water is drained out of a web running through the twin-wire zone through both of the wires. After the twin-wire zone, the web is separated from the covering wire and is transferred on the carrying wire to a pick-up point. In hybrid formers, after an initial single-wire forming zone preceding the twin-wire zone, and in gap formers, after a curved forming zone placed directly after a forming gap, there is a forming shoe provided with a ribbed deck and arranged inside one of the wire loops. This forming shoe is followed by dewatering and web forming units which include forming ribs and are placed inside both of the wire loops. At least one of the dewatering and web forming units is loaded by means of a pressure-hose arrangement.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1994Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Michael Odell, Pekka Evasoja, Jyrki Jaakkola, Jouko Aula

Patent number: 5535527Abstract: A method for causing adherence of a web to a drying wire so as to prevent the effects of centrifugal forces and of other air-flow phenomena, which effects attempt to separate the web from the drying wire in dryer groups having a single-wire draw and arranged in a multi-cylinder dryer of a paper machine. The dryer groups include heated drying cylinders, a drying wire for pressing the web against outer cylinder faces of the drying cylinders, and guide cylinders or rolls on which the web runs on the outside face of the drying wire. The guide cylinders have perforations which pass through the cylinder mantle and open into an inside space in the interior of the guide cylinders which is subjected to a vacuum. The vacuum in the guide cylinders is transferred to the outside face through the perforations. The guide cylinders have shafts on which the guide cylinders are mounted revolving.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Raimo Virta, Seppo Rantanen

Patent number: 5534116Abstract: The invention relates to a closed press section in a paper machine and comprises a compact combination of press rolls. Several of the rolls define press nips with each other, between which nips the web has a closed draw supported by the face of a fabric. The press section has a center roll in connection with which a press nip or press nips are provided. A closed loop of a transfer band is passed around the center roll. The web is transferred on an outer face of the transfer band after the last press nip in the compact combination of rolls as a closed and constantly supported draw onto a drying wire in a drying section following after the press section. The transfer band loop is made of a transfer band fabric that substantially does not receive water and does not rewet the web.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Valmet Paper Machinery Inc.Inventors: Mikko Karvinen, Reima Kerttula, Jorma Laapotti, Juhani Pajula

Patent number: 5531396Abstract: A method and device for reeling a paper or board web in a drum reel-up or equivalent, in which, when a paper or board reel formed on a reel spool situated in a reeling position becomes complete, a new reel spool is brought by transfer members into a stand-by position and accelerated up to the web speed. The reel spool with the complete reel is transferred into an exchange position apart from the reel drum and the new, initially accelerated reel spool is transferred into the reeling position. When the reel spool with its reel is transferred into the exchange position apart from the reel drum, the belt guide roll is transferred into nip-defining relationship with the complete reel that is being formed onto the reel spool and is displaced along with the reel spool into the exchange position so that the web runs during the entire exchange on support of the belt and through a nip between the guide roll and the reel spool.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1994Date of Patent: July 2, 1996Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Jorma Kinnunen, Silvo Mikkonen

Patent number: 5524360Abstract: A method and apparatus for ventilating pocket spaces in a multi-cylinder dryer of a paper machine, in particular a high-speed paper machine whose running speed is higher than about 800 meters per minute, in the area of a so-called twin-wire draw. In the twin-wire draw, the drying cylinders in the drying group are arranged in two rows placed one above the other, in which rows the successive cylinders are placed in the upper row and in the lower row as interlocked. In each cylinder group, there are two drying wires, an upper wire and a lower wire for pressing the paper web against heated faces of the drying cylinder while being guided by guide rolls placed in gaps between the cylinders. The paper web runs as free draws between the rows of cylinders.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1994Date of Patent: June 11, 1996Assignee: Valmet Paper Machinery Inc.Inventors: Raimo Virta, Vesa Vuorinen

Patent number: 5522959Abstract: A press section of a paper machine, in particular for printing paper qualities whose grammage is in the range of about 40 g/m.sup.2 to about 80 g/m.sup.2 is disclosed. The press section comprises a pick-up roll having a suction zone on which a paper web is detached at a pick-up point from a forming wire and is passed on the pick-up felt into a first press nip in the press section. In the first press nip, the pick-up felt acts as a press fabric. The press section further includes an extended nip placed after the first press nip. Into this extended nip, the web is passed as a closed draw on support of a fabric face or roll face. The first nip in the press section is a roll nip with relatively low load and acts as a front nip. In the area of the first press nip, almost or approximately one half of the total amount of the water contained in the web entering into the front nip is removed from the web.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1994Date of Patent: June 4, 1996Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventor: Antti Ilmarinen
