  • Patent number: 5662778
Abstract: A press section in a paper machine through which a paper web has a closed and supported draw. The press section has at least two successive separate press nips and dewatering of the paper web is carried out at least in the first one of these press nips, preferably between two press fabrics that receive water. The last press nip in the press section is an equalizing press nip which is separate from the preceding nip and in which no substantial dewatering is performed. The paper web is passed through the equalizing press nip from the preceding dewatering press nip on a transfer belt substantially not receiving water, on its substantially straight run. This run is continued after the equalizing nip as a run of substantially the same direction, on which run, some of the elongation of the paper web in the machine direction is compensated for, which elongation takes place in the equalizing nip, by a difference in speed of the transfer belt.

  • Patent number: 5661911
Abstract: A method and device for contact drying a paper web, wherein the paper web is dried initially in a number of successive groups with single-wire draw by pressing the paper web via drying wires of each groups against the heated faces of the drying cylinders and by guiding the paper web on support of the same drying wire from one drying cylinder onto the next drying cylinder over the reversing suction cylinders or rolls in each group with single-wire draw. In the groups with single-wire draw, the paper web is dried to a first dry solids content, after which the paper web is dried directly further by a single group with twin-wire draw to a second dry solids content, after which the paper web is dried further to its final dry solids content by a single normal group with single-wire draw. The limits of the first and second dry solids contents are selected so that, in the middle or in the beginning of the range, the tear strength index and the breaking strength index of the web are at their maximum.

  • Patent number: 5653041
Abstract: A method and device for drying a paper web wherein the paper web is supported on a drying wire without long open draws of the web. The paper web is contact-dried by pressing it with the drying wire onto a face of a contact-drying cylinder whose diameter is greater than about 1.5 m on a sector b whose magnitude is greater than about 180.degree.. The web is evaporation-dried as blowing-on drying and/or as through-drying by means of high-velocity drying-gas jets applied to the web on the drying wire on the face of the following large-diameter cylinder whose diameter is greater than about 2 m on a sector a having a magnitude greater than about 180.degree. while the web is on the side of the outside curve. The web to be dried is passed over a sector c of the suction roll which is subjected to negative pressure while the web is supported on the drying wire at the side of the outside curve. The magnitude of the sector of the suction roll has a magnitude greater than about 160.degree.

  • Patent number: 5653583
Abstract: The invention provides an oil hydraulic pump wherein a suction connector can be attached readily to a body using a single bolt. Annular stepped portions direction reversely to each other are formed on a suction port of the body and a flange portion and an insertion projection of the suction connector, respectively, such that, when the insertion projection is inserted into the suction port, the annular stepped portions cooperate to form an annular seal groove. The annular seal groove has a pair of side faces opposing to each other in a direction perpendicular, and extending in parallel, to an axial line of the seal groove and serving as interference acting faces. The resilient force by the interference of the seal fitted in the seal groove acts only upon the interface acting faces.

  • Patent number: 5650049
Abstract: A press section for a paper machine employing at least two press nips placed one after the other. Of these nips, at least the first nip is an extended nip or an extended roll nip. The last nip in the press section is placed on a level higher than the preceding nip. The first nip and/or, when more than two nips are employed, the nip that immediately precedes the last nip is/are provided with two press fabrics that receive water. The paper web is transferred on the lower fabric of the two press fabrics onto an upper fabric of the last nip. On the lower face of the upper fabric, the web is transferred into the last nip. After the web transfer point, the upper fabric of the last nip has a relatively short upwardly inclined run. After this, the upper fabric is turned and guided by the lower roll of the last nip over a considerable sector thereof. The last nip is placed after, or at the vicinity of, the uppermost point of the lower roll that forms the last nip.

  • Patent number: 5649448
Abstract: A method for controlling transverse profiles of a web in a web-manufacturing machine, such as a board or paper machine, and/or being treated in a finishing machine. At least one of a transverse caliper, grammage and moisture profiles of the web is measured either directly or indirectly. Actuators acting upon these profiles are regulated by measurement signals. In order to optimize the quality of the web to be produced, the reel formation, and the runnability of the machine, the transverse tension profile of the web to be manufactured and/or treated is measured. Based on the measurement of the transverse tension profile, set profiles are formed which control the actuator(s) of the profile regulation.

  • Patent number: 5648252
Abstract: A supported polyionic hydrogel containing biologically active material is epared by impregnating into a porous support material a solution of anionic polysaccharide, a solution of cationic polysaccharide and a biologically active material. The anionic polysaccharide and the cationic polysaccharide react with each other to form a hydrogel containing the biologically active material. The hydrogel may be dried such as by lyophilization. The biologically active material can be in either polysaccharide solution or in another solution impregnated into the porous support material. A paper material or a textile material may be used as the porous support material. Preferably, the anionic polysaccharide is xanthan, dicarboxystarch or dicarboxycellulose and the cationic polysaccharide is chitosan. Especially preferred is a hydrogel formed from xanthan and chitosan.

  • Patent number: 5643548
Abstract: A process and plant for drying and then separating moist salts, such as magnesium sulfite, in which the moist magnesium sulfite is heated to a temperature greater than or equal to about 200.degree. C. in a dryer and the passed through a solid materials lock into a separating plant. The dryer is heated by a circulating stream of exhaust vapors which is heated in a heat exchanger by exhaust gas generated in the separating plant so that the water of crystallization of the magnesium sulfite as well as residual humidity is eliminated during the drying process. Vapor-free acid anhydride, usually sulphur dioxide, is prepared in the separating plant from the dehydrated salt and a metal oxide, e.g., MgO, is recovered or otherwise used. The acid anhydride may be liquified and has a large degree of purity.
