Patent number: 5599263Abstract: An oil feed system for a variable-crown roll which includes a stationary roll axle, a roll mantle arranged revolvingly on the roll axle and hydraulic loading elements acting upon an inner face of the roll mantle in a radial direction and supporting the roll mantle on the roll axle. The loading elements function to regulate the axial profile of the roll mantle. In the roll axle, an axial through hole is formed which communicates with cylinder bores in which the hydraulic loading elements are arranged through substantially radial bores or equivalent ducts. In the axial through hole, at least through one of the roll ends, oil feed pipes are installed and through which pipes, a pressure fluid is fed to the hydraulic loading elements. Into the axial through hole in the roll axle, at the location of the loading elements, an intermediate flange is installed, which operates as a distributor piece and is connected with the loading element.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1995Date of Patent: February 4, 1997Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Risto Haiko, Ari Lehto, Pekka Kivioja

Patent number: 5599427Abstract: The invention is related to a twin-wire web former in a paper machine having a covering wire and a carrying wire which form a twin-wire forming zone with one another. A discharge opening of a headbox feeds a pulp suspension jet into the forming gap defined between said wires. The forming gap is immediately followed immediately by a forming shoe provided with a curved guide deck. A draining unit or units is/are provided after the forming shoe, before the first forming roll. The draining unit/units comprise(s) a press/support unit which guides the wire placed in contact with it as a straight run. The draining unit or units further comprise(s) a draining equipment provided with suction and foil equipment and placed opposite to the press/support unit, which draining equipment removes a substantial amount of water out of the web.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1992Date of Patent: February 4, 1997Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Mauri Koivuranta, Michael Odell

Patent number: 5596911Abstract: A drive gear for a group of cylinders and a method in the drive of cylinders in which the drive gear has a box frame including a front plate, a rear plate, and side plates, and to which box frame, rotational drive is introduced from outside the gearbox through a shaft. Rotation of the shaft causes rotation of a cogwheel and further, two other cogwheels are rotated which are in contact with this cogwheel, and the drive is transferred to both sides of the gearbox and further to the cylinders. The box frame of the gearbox is stationarily supported on a foundation which receives the weight of the gearbox shafts and cogwheels and the weight of the box frame. The load arising from the weight of the gearbox is transferred to the foundation through the box frame of the gearbox. Two cylinders and their shafts can be operated so that, between the shafts and the gearbox, there is a floating coupling which permits certain angular changes for the shafts of the driven cylinders.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1995Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Valmet Power Transmission Inc.Inventor: Vaino Panttila

Patent number: 5597449Abstract: A method and device for conditioning a ceramic or metal-ceramic coating of a paper machine roll at its operating site. The roll is ground periodically by a grinding member mounted on a doctor of the roll. The grain size of the grinding particles in the grinding member, i.e., the average diameter of the particles, is in the range of from about 15 to about 200 .mu.m. In the grinding situation, the roll is rotated in its site of operation, and the grinding member is pressed with a force into contact with the face to be ground, whereby, if the face to be ground is excessively rough, it is smoothed to the desired value of surface roughness and, in a corresponding manner, an excessively smooth face is roughened to the desired surface roughness value determined by the grinding member.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1994Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Juhani Vestola, Pekka Harinen
