Abstract: A crystal having good optical transmission between 260 nm and 280 nm and strongly absorbing at 285 nm and higher, which is nonhydroscopic and stable at temperatures to 250° C. An example of such a crystal is Cerium doped YLiF4. These properties make YLiF4 crystals doped with Ce3+ excellent materials for use as UV filters in the missile early warning spectral band. Optical devices including missile detection systems are also provided.
Abstract: A remotely testable Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag interrogation system is described. The system comprises a remotely activated test PIT tag fixed within the field of the system antenna By selectively activating the test PIT tag, and determining successful receipt of the test tag identification signal during such activation, remote confirmation of proper operation of the system is achieved. The system also contains components which permit the remote detection of the antenna field by analyzing signals present in the antenna during operation. Remote detection of the natural frequency to which the antenna is tuned is also achieved by analyzing signals present in the antenna during the collapse of the electromagnetic field in the antenna when the antenna drive signal is removed.
Abstract: A filter constructed of a plurality of micro-mechanical resonators that are weakly coupled together. Micro-machining techniques enable the fabrication of a plurality of resonators having nearly identical frequency performance characteristics, with the difference in resonant frequency between and among the plurality of resonators being no more than approximately 1%. Any number of resonators may be coupled in virtually any configuration (e.g., circular, square, triangular, straight, etc.) to form a filter in accordance with the present invention. One of the resonators of the filter is driven into motion by an electrical signal, and the resonating movement (i.e., physical response) is detectable using optical interference techniques and systems directed at a resonator other than the resonator driven into motion.

Abstract: A synthetic chew toy can be formed as a composite of two different materials. The toy can be formed with a rigid synthetic frame, supporting a softer chew portion. The chew portion can include a plurality of projections, preferably having a cylindrical shape with a hemispheric end, extending outward from a base of the chew portion. Thus, the rigidity of the frame provides structure, support and durability for the chew toy, and the relatively softer chew portion can provide beneficial effects to a pets teeth and gums, or provide greater chewing pleasure.
Abstract: Sounding apparatus for pressing a sounding rod into a piece of ground in order to determine the soil properties at various depths, comprising a sounding rod which is intended to be pressed into a piece of ground; first and second clamping members for alternately clamping the sounding rod in place; first drive means for moving the first clamping member up and down in the longitudinal direction of the sounding rod; in which apparatus the first and second clamping members can be separately actuated between an open position and a closed position; second drive means are provided for moving the second clamping member up and down in the longitudinal direction of the sounding rod; and control means are provided, which are connected to the clamping members and drive means for alternately clamping in place, releasing and moving the respective clamping members up and down.

Abstract: A rotor shaft for a high speed rotary machine has bearing parts which, after being fitted in the machine, are held in oil-lubricated sliding-contact bearings. The rotor shaft is provided, in the region of at least one bearing part, with an outer casing having a cylindrical outer surface which forms, in the region of the the bearing part, the outer surface of the rotor shaft. The outer casing comprises a separate, one-piece cylindrical sleeve arranged directly on the shaft part situated inside the sleeve and forming a structural unity therewith. The contact surface between the sleeve and the shaft part situated inside the sleeve has a cylindrical shape. The cylindrical sleeve forms a thermally insulating layer between the outer surface of the sleeve and the shaft situated inside the sleeve.
Abstract: A new device and method for providing strain relief to soft-jacketed cables includes a base with a mounting portion and a tubular extension having a plurality of deflectable arms, each of which are provided with a pad. Upon tightening of a nut having a tapered inner channel, the deflectable arms and pads radially converge about the cable. The pads evenly spread the gripping forces created by the convergence of the deflectable arms, thereby preventing damage to the wires within the soft-jacketed cable.
Abstract: A gaming machine, comprising a reel, of which a circumferential surface is divided into a number of fields, each suitable for bearing a symbol (which is also understood to include a blank), a microstep drive unit, which is suitable for positioning the reel within each field in a number of angle positions and maintaining it therein, a memory with a table whose locations contain enabled stop positions, and random generator means which generate a random number within the address range of the table, for addressing the table therewith, in order to read out the enabled stop position stored in the addressed memory location, and in order to rotate the reel to the read-out enabled stop position.

Abstract: A sipper tube cap assembly is provided having a cap with a flat surface and a curved wall. A circumferential flange is formed by the flat surface and further defines an opening in the cap. A stopper, having a hole formed therein, is positioned in said cap by said circumferential flange to retain the stopper within the cap. Finally, a sipper tube is provided which is positioned within the hole in the stopper, to extend through the opening.

The magnetic recording medium of the present invention is characterized in that both the running durability and electromagnetic characteristics are excellent.

Abstract: Gas discharge is caused in a predetermined discharging gas at atmospheric pressure or a pressure close to atmospheric pressure, and an organic material which is liquid at room temperature and which is previously contained in the discharging gas or applied to a surface of a treated member is dissociated or excited by a plasma caused by the gas discharge to generate activated species. By using these excited activated species, a polymerized film of organic material is formed on the surface of the treated member. By variously selecting the organic material or the kind of the discharging material and variously combining them, a water repellent film, a hydrophilic film or a film having a high hardness can easily be formed on the surface of the treated member according to use, or the polymerization speed of the organic material can be increased, or the polymerization can be limited.
Abstract: A rodent cage including a cage bottom having a plurality of integral side walls, a floor and an open top end. A peripheral lip extends continuously around the top end. A pair of recesses are disposed on the peripheral lip. A feeder assembly has a frame and at least one section descending therefrom. The frame has pair of flanges extending therefrom so that when the feeder assembly is disposed in the cage bottom the pair of flanges are mated with the pair of recesses, respectively. A bonnet is dimensioned in size for sealing the top end of the cage bottom. A lock is disposed on the bonnet for preventing rodents housed in the cage from displacing the bonnet from the cage bottom.
