  • Patent number: 6252140
Abstract: The invention is directed to novel promoters or mutants thereof from Chlorella virus DNA methyltransferase genes. A Chlorella virus gene promoter is operably linked to a first and/or second DNA sequence encoding a gene that is different from the Chlorella virus gene to form an expression cassette. An expression cassette can be introduced into prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic cells and can provide for a high level of expression of the gene encoded by the first and/or second DNA sequence. The invention also provides a method for screening other Chlorella virus genes for promoters that can function to express a heterologous gene in prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic hosts.

  • Patent number: 6188288
Abstract: A frequency synthesizer apparatus is disclosed which combines a digital multiplier in the count down and phase comparison section with an oscillator entirely contained on an integrated circuit. Inclusion of the digital multiplier allows simultaneous realization of high loop bandwidth and fast tuning speed. The large loop bandwidth facilitates use of a totally integrated oscillator, which was heretofore not useable because of inferior phase noise characteristics. An integrated filter further enhances loop bandwidth while maintaining stability. Synchronizing the modulus switching of a multi-modulus prescaler with the multiplier coefficient minimizes spurious responses in the synthesized output.

  • Patent number: 6189106
Abstract: A method for scheduling an operational setting of a computer-based information handling system or electronic device is described. An event is scheduled to occur at a predetermined time, and a determination is made from the scheduled event an optimal operational setting at which to set the computer-based information handling system or electronic device during the scheduled event. At the predetermined time, the computer-based information handling system or electronic device is operated at the optimal setting. A method and system for scheduling the power mode operation of a computer-based information handling system wherein the computer based-information handling system is capable of operating at a first power level for maximizing performance while receiving power from an external power source, and is capable of operating at a second power level for minimizing power consumption while receiving power from a battery is further described.

  • Patent number: 6185627
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively sending a first signal or a second signal to an output signal are described. An electrical characteristic of a device coupled to the output is determined, and, in the event the electrical characteristic is determined to be a predetermined value, the first signal to the output, otherwise, the second signal is sent. A detector coupled to the output of an information handling system detects a characteristic of a device coupled to the output. The characteristic is indicative of the type of signal sent to the output. A first type of signal is sent to the output when the characteristic has a predetermined value and a second type of signal is sent to the output when the characteristic does not have the predetermined value. Whether a speaker is an analog speaker or a digital speaker may be automatically determined, and an appropriate analog or digital signal is sent to the speaker depending upon its type.

  • Patent number: 6144976
Abstract: A portable data collection terminal has an elongate housing with a hand grip conforming rear surface. A front surface features a numerical keyboard adjacent a lower end of the housing and an LCD screen adjacent the keyboard toward an upper end of the housing. The display screen is of elongate rectangular shape, its length extending longitudinally of the housing of the data terminal. The active area of the display screen is covered by a touch sensitive overlay screen which is configured in one mode of operation of the data terminal into an alphabetical keyboard. The orientation of the display is switchable between orientations in which the line direction of the displayed data extends across or longitudinally of the data terminal. The keys of the numerical keyboard are identified by indicia disposed on a template. The orientation of the template may be sensed to switch the orientation of the displayed data and touch sensitive key identifiers to correspond to the orientation of the indicia on the template.
