  • Patent number: 5997646
Abstract: An applicator for direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty coating medium onto a traveling material web includes a metering system with a metering slot configured as a nozzle and formed between an approach-side lip and a departure-side lip. The applicator also includes, disposed opposite the nozzle, a traveling countersurface on which the coating medium issuing out of the metering slot is to be applied. The exit of the metering slot is followed by a transfer blade for the coating medium, arranged on the approach-side lip. The transfer blade has its length, with respect to the countersurface, selected such that the transfer blade in its operating position contacts the countersurface. The transfer blade passes the coating medium along its departure-side surface from the exit of the metering slot onto the countersurface.

  • Patent number: 5983962
Abstract: A portable fuel dispensing system which eliminates the need for underground storage tanks that are subject to leaks resulting in contamination of the stored fuel, soil and ground water creating costly environmental hazards. A semi-tractor trailer supported fuel receptacle has a plurality of metered fuel dispensers along the sides thereof allowing several customers to park along side the trailer and fuel their vehicles. The trailer may be taken to a central location for filling and then transported to a convenient retail location for dispensing the fuel to customers' vehicles. When empty, the trailer is returned to the central location for refuelling. During this return trip, the tank may be connected to a fuel/air inlet of the tractor so fuel vapor remaining in the tank may be burned rather than escaping into the atmosphere. The system is a completely closed system with no venting of fumes into the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5979641
Abstract: A paper machine includes a guide connected to a roll for moving an end of the roll in transverse directions to a longitudinal axis of the roll. The guide includes a support frame and a roll mounting frame pivotally connected to the support frame at a pivot axis. The roll mounting frame is connected to and rotatably carries the roll. Two positioning devices are respectively disposed between and engage each of the support frame and the roll mounting frame on opposite sides of the pivot axis. The two positioning devices pivot the roll mounting frame about the pivot axis and thereby move the roll in one of the transverse directions. The two positioning devices coact to maintain the roll mounting frame in one of a plurality of positions relative to the support frame.

  • Patent number: 5975756
Abstract: A method of measuring the temperature of a wire which is surrounded by a layer of insulation includes the step of wrapping the layer of insulation with an electrically and thermally conductive ground shield having two opposing longitudinal ends, one of the ends being electrically grounded. A first relationship is determined between the temperature of the wire and a temperature of the shield. A second relationship is ascertained between an electrical resistance of the shield between the longitudinal ends and the temperature of the shield. The electrical resistance of the shield between the longitudinal ends is measured. The temperature of the wire is established by using the first relationship and the second relationship to correlate the measured electrical resistance of the shield to the temperature of the wire.
