Abstract: A process for preparing trifluoromethylphenyl nitro phenylethers which comprises treating a trifluoromethylhalobenzene with a base in a cosolvent system to afford a trifluoromethyl phenolate which may be isolated as its free phenol or reacted with an appropriately substituted halobenzene to afford a diphenylether herbicide or a precursor thereto.
Abstract: A process for the direct oxidation of isobutane or propane to methacrylic acid or acrylic acid respectively is disclosed. The process encompasses contacting a feed gas containing isobutane or propane and oxygen with a specific catalyst which is composed of molybdenum, antimony and phosphorus combined with oxygen. The atomic ratio of molybdenum to antimony to phosphorous is from about 9 to about 24; about 0.25 to about 2; and about 0.75 to about 2 respectively. The catalytic oxidation to methacrylic or acrylic acid is accomplished at a temperature of from about 200.degree. C. to about 450.degree. C. The methacrylic or acrylic acid is removed from the feed gases exiting from the reaction zone and the remainder of the exited feed stream may be recycled to again contact the catalyst.

Abstract: 2-Imino substituted isothioureidobenzene products useful as anthelmintics and fungicides are disclosed. The products may be prepared by several different methods including treating a 2-iminothioureidobenzene with a base and either an organic halide, a diester of sulfuric acid or a diester of sulfurous acid or treating a 2-aminoisothioureidobenzene with an appropriately substituted aldehyde.
Abstract: An effective amount of a vinylbenzyltrialkylammonium salt, prepared from a vinylbenzyl halide and a tertiary amine, is polymerized with various other monomers to afford stable latex polymers which have the latex stabilizing surfactant incorporated into the polymer backbone. The use of a vinylbenzyltrialkylammonium salt lessens or avoids the usual problems associated with the conventional anionic, nonionic or cationic emulsifiers employed in aqueous polymerizations. The copolymers prepared with the quaternary ammonium compounds are useful as sizing agents, as extender/binders for cationic water repellents; in addition, the polymers are depositable on pulp without requiring any deposition aids or defoamers.

Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a dual stroke drive mechanism of any size for a reciprocating device, such as a piston of a pump. It is particularly concerned with such a driving mechanism having means for selecting a particular stroke-length. It is more specifically concerned with a drive mechanism capable of imparting either one of two set stroke-lengths and means for selecting one of the stroke lengths before, or at certain intervals during, operation of the mechanism. The drive mechanism converts rotary movement of an input member into reciprocating rectilinear movement of an output member which may be connected to a piston and reciprocates the latter. A preferred application is in the field of sampling pumps for distributing liquid samples of small sizes into vials for analysis.
