Patent number: 5356190Abstract: A handguard for plastic bags and like carrying items having thin loop-type handles which includes a planar palm guard member connected by a U-shaped bridging member to a finger guard portion. In vertical elevation, the palm, bridge and finger guard form a J-shape assembly. The handguard further includes a planar keeper which is joined at its upper edge to an upper end region of the palm guard to form a rigid hinge which forces the planar keeper outwardly in a sprung-open position so that the lower edge of the keeper is retained by the upper edge of the finger guard portion. In use, the handguard is held generally vertically in the user's hand with the palm portion resting against the user's palm and the U-shaped bridging member supported by the user's fingers. The loops of the plastic grocery bags are then picked up so that they are received within the trough of the U-shaped bridge member.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Inventor: Daniel S. Patent number: 5320190Abstract: A motor vehicle battery cooling arrangement wherein the battery is enclosed by a housing which includes an air inlet port connected to an air guide disposed in front of the vehicle's radiator and cooling fan and an air outlet port connected to the outside. When the vehicle is moving, air impacting at the air guide enters the air inlet port and exits the air outlet port thus cooling the battery. When the vehicle is stationary or when it is very hot and the fan is turned on, the direction of air flow through the battery housing is reversed as the fan induced air flow at the air guide produces a partial vacuum which sucks hot air away from the battery housing through the air inlet port. Cooler fresh air is drawn into the battery housing through the air outlet port. In an alternate embodiment, the air inlet port is connected to the front portion of the engine compartment and the air outlet port is connected to the scoop or shroud housing for the cooling fan located behind the radiator.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1992Date of Patent: June 14, 1994Assignee: Audi AGInventors: Fritz Naumann, Hans-Gunther Haldenwanger

Patent number: 5269269Abstract: An improved adjusting device for gas changing valves for use in internal combustion engines comprising a spring system and two electrically-operated, opposed actuating solenoids which are alternately excited to move a reduced mass actuator assembly back and forth therebetween and which is held at two discreet mutually-opposite operating positions. The improved actuator assembly comprises a reduced mass anchor plate which includes integrally attached upper and lower stems, which stems are guided through a co-aligned bore through both electromagnets. The lower stem includes a flange member which engages a flanged stamp end portion of a gas exchange valve stem to move the valve to either an open or closed position in response to the attraction of the anchor plate to a pole surface of an excited electromagnet. Patent number: 5261779Abstract: An improved dual hydraulic, parallelogram arm wheel chair lift assembly for use in commercial vehicles, such as vans or buses. The lift assembly includes a platform connected at one end to a pair of parallelogram linkages, each of which is provided with a power-up, gravity-down hydraulic cylinder for pulling the parallelogram linkages and platform from a lowered loading position to an immediate transfer position, and thence to a folded, generally upright stored position. The pulling action of the hydraulic cylinders with hydraulic fluid working on the rod side reduces side loading on the piston head and wear on pivot pins of the parallelogram linkages. The hydraulic cylinders are self-bleeding of air during gravity down operation to reduce spongy and jerky operation. The lift assembly has an improved base member employing an additional base support plate to form a box structure to increase strength and reduce moment-induced bending of the mounting plate.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1992Date of Patent: November 16, 1993Assignee: The Braun CorporationInventor: Ronald W.
