  • Patent number: 4357634
Abstract: A method and apparatus for encoding and decoding digital information upon a recording medium using the time interval between adjacent pairs of pulses. A number "n" of unique time intervals between pulse pairs correspond to "n" unique symbols contained within a coding table. Assignment of the durations between pulses adapted to the frequency of occurrence of particular symbols within a data stream materially increases the efficiency of the method. Division of the data stream and numerical transformation of the data stream improve the efficiency of adaptive assignment of the durations between pulses on the basis of frequency of occurrence of particular symbols within a data stream. The method realizes a multiple-fold increase in data storage capacity of rotating magnetic disk memories over common MFM encoding, and the method similarly realizes a multiple-fold increase in data transfer rate for telecommunications applications.

  • Patent number: 4347689
Abstract: A method and apparatus for burnishing the coated recording surface of magnetic disks. The method consists in contacting the coated surface of a rotary disk with a longitudinally stationary length of an abrasive burnishing tape while oscillating that tape laterally back and forth across the surface. The length of the tape has a first segment which is urged into contact with the coated surface and a much longer second segment which is urged into contact only by its own weight. Prior to burnishing each surface, the tape is advanced longitudinally so that a section of the tape serves as the first segment for only a single coated surface and so that a section of the tape to serve as the first segment has already served as the second segment in burnishing prior coated surfaces. The apparatus employed to burnish the coated surface of disks has a rotating platen onto which a disk is placed and an arm around one terminal end of which the tape passes.

  • Patent number: 4344809
Abstract: A jet etch apparatus and method for decapsulation of molded devices having an etching block through which an etchant solution is drawn. The etchant solution which flows through the etching block forms a jet spray that impinges upon a device to be decapsulated. The etchant solution is drawn through the etching block by means of suction created by a jet pump. The decapsulation process is monitored by detecting current flow between an electrode in the etchant solution and the device. The imposed current also serves to limit excessive oxidation of aluminum pads within the device, thereby preventing attack of the aluminum by the etchant.

  • Patent number: 4340462
Abstract: A plasma processing chamber incorporating parallel plate electrodes whose separation may be mechanically adjusted from the outside thereof. The chamber includes a sealable assembly including an electrode housing and a reaction chamber body. The body includes an aperture to receive a planar surfaced terminal end of the housing. The aperture is constructed to permit the housing to be easily translated with respect to the body. One electrode surface of the chamber is established on the end of the housing thus received. The other electrode is provided by a corresponding surface within the body. Entry of atmospheric gases into the space between the electrode's surfaces is barred by a sliding, dual, differentially pumped seal between the housing's surface and the aperture's surface. Also incorporated into the processing chamber are four jackscrews aligned parallel to the axis of the housing.
