  • Patent number: 6189162
Abstract: A combination receptacle and fluid immobilizer is disclosed for collecting a fluid. The receptacle has a bottom and sidewalls joined to the bottom to form at least a partially enclosed void area. The receptacle has an opening through which a fluid can be collected and later removed. A flushable, fluid immobilizer is positioned within the receptacle and is absorbent. The fluid immobilizer is formed from a multitude of randomly oriented cellulosic fibers that are elastically stressed and bonded by only hydrogen bonds. The fluid immobilizer is capable of capturing and immobilizing fluid which is collected in the receptacle such that the fluid can be transported to a discharge location without having to worry about spillage.

  • Patent number: 6182418
Abstract: A method and apparatus for packaging tissue in a pop-up tissue dispenser is disclosed. The pop-up dispenser being a carton having a top wall, a bottom wall and four sidewalls which join the top wall to the bottom wall. The carton also has an opening formed in the top wall through which the tissues can be withdrawn. The method includes the steps of providing several tissues that are substantially identical to one another. The tissues are described as a first tissue and a plurality of other tissues. The several tissues are transported to a folding station and are interfolded to form an interfolded assemblage. Only the first tissue is colored or has a visual indicator printed or applied to it to form a visually distinctive tissue. The interfolded assemblage is then cut to form a plurality of clips of interfolded tissues. Each of the clips includes one of the visually distinctive tissues and a plurality of the other tissues.

  • Patent number: 6177608
Abstract: A tampon for feminine hygiene having an absorbent core and a cover disposed around the core which is permeable to body fluids, the cover being provided with flexible barrier strips which are spreadable from the tampon surface. The barrier strips serve to close the space between the tampon surface and the walls of the vaginal duct when the tampon is inserted, preventing leakage especially in the time just after insertion. The barrier strips may be of either hydrophilic or hydrophobic material. In the embodiment in which the barrier strips are hydrophilic, they serve as absorbent elements of the tampon in addition to the tampon core. In the embodiment in which the barrier strips are of a hydrophobic material, they direct menstrual fluids inwardly to the absorbent tampon core. In yet another embodiment, the barrier strips may be of a folded two-layer construction filled with an absorbent material.

  • Patent number: 6171682
Abstract: Apparatus for continuously producing a web (1) which is corrugated from a thin sheet material which is elastic at least in a transverse direction of the web. The apparatus includes a guide bed (2) which has grooves extending parallel or inclined to each other in the direction of movement of the material. The apparatus also has holding-down devices (5) arranged opposite the grooves of the guide bed (2) so as to urge the web passing between the surface of the guide bed (2) and the holding-down devices (5) into the grooves of the guide bed (2) to obtain corrugations in the web. Finally, at the outlet end (4) of the guide bed (2) is an apparatus or substance which substantially prevents the formed corrugations from springing back to the original condition. A process for producing a strip and an absorbent article containing corrugated strips are included.

  • Patent number: 6146568
Abstract: A method for making an absorbent member is disclosed. The method includes introducing fibers into an air stream to form an air-fiber mixture. This air-fiber mixture is then directed to a porous media having a first surface. The air-fiber mixture contacts the first surface and the fibers collect on the first surface and forms a fibrous mat. The air passes through the first surface and can be recovered and recycled, if desired. The air-fiber mixture is then terminated or diverted so that the fibrous mat can be removed from the first surface. The fibrous mat is wetted by water to obtain a desired moisture content. Finally, the wetted fibrous mat is compressed to a predetermined thickness to form an absorbent member, which has unique expansion properties.

  • Patent number: 6146500
Abstract: A suction breast roll former has a support surface with a plurality of apertures formed therein that are operatively connected to a vacuum source. A headbox has a flexible roof extending downstream from a slice opening and disposed adjacent to a support surface of the suction breast roll. The headbox permits the flexible roof to bend over a range of movement relative to the support surface to match the shape of a drainage curve suiting current operating conditions. A method of forming a paper web includes the steps of supplying an aqueous suspension of papermaking fibers to a forming zone created between the suction breast roll and the headbox. The headbox includes a slice body and an apron that define a slice opening therebetween and also has a flexible roof extending from the slice opening and spaced from the support surface to define a forming zone therebetween. • Patent number: 6077390
Abstract: High bulk tissue webs are processed sequentially through separate calendering and embossing units to optimize the balance between sheet caliper for winding tension and embossing element height for pattern definition, resulting in embossed, high-bulk tissue products with improved embossing pattern clarity. The multiple step converting process enables the use of male embossing elements having a height of about 0.04 inch or greater. The tissue webs have a Residual Waviness value of 12 micrometers or greater, which is attributable to average surface waviness values for the spot embossments being about 30 micrometers or greater.
