  • Patent number: 5609585
Abstract: An adhesive wafer is disclosed having a thin barrier layer of soft, pliant adhesive material with particles of one or more hydrocolloids dispersed therein. A flexible and preferably stretchable cover layer extends along one side of the barrier layer and a removable release sheet protects the opposite side of the barrier layer. The wafer has a central zone and a relatively large outer zone surrounding that central zone, with the material of the barrier layer in the outer zone having generally uniform molecular orientations in radial directions over an arc of 360 degrees and being of relatively uniform tensile strength in all such radial directions. Also disclosed are injection/compression molding methods for making such wafers.

  • Patent number: 5607413
Abstract: An adhesive faceplate for detachable connection to an ostomy pouch is disclosed. The faceplate has an integrated convex pressure ring for promoting stomal protrusion and a so-called floating flange (i.e., coupling ring) for mechanical attachment to the mating coupling ring of an ostomy pouch. The convex pressure ring is provided with a deep annular recess behind the faceplate's coupling ring to accommodate a user's fingers during a coupling operation, thereby facilitating attachment of a pouch. The pressure ring also includes a thin, inwardly-extending connecting portion which is heat sealed to the backing layer of the faceplate's adhesive wafer and, when that backing layer is formed of a porous material, such heat seal effectively closes the pores of the backing layer in the area of the seal.

  • Patent number: 5593397
Abstract: The fecal collector that includes a bag of elastomeric heat-sealable film having an opening for receiving fecal discharge and a thin attachment patch having a central opening in register with the opening of the bag. The patch includes a skin barrier layer of rubbery pressure-sensitive adhesive having hydrocolloid particles dispersed therein and having a backing layer secured to one side of the skin barrier layer. The backing layer is formed of stretchable and contractable heat-sealable material and is joined to the bag along a narrow annular heat seal line immediately surrounding the openings of the bag and patch. Because of the elastic properties of the materials, the openings may readily expand and contract to accommodate anatomical changes commonly occuring during defecation, thereby preventing disruption of the adhesive attachment between the patch and the patient.

  • Patent number: 5579890
Abstract: An actuator member is disclosed in which the actuator member is capable of providing linear and selective rotary movement of the table top of the conveyor member. The actuator member includes a platform housing which can be fixedly attached to conventional conveyor links in a conveyor line, or linear slides. A follower wheel is rotably mounted in the platform housing and includes a table top. The follower wheel is provided with an actuation mechanism for engaging a stationary cam and selectively preventing rotation of the table top or rotating the table top a predetermined radial distance as the conveyor member progresses down the conveyor line. The stationary cam includes dwell portions and index portions which are selectively placed so that, when the actuation mechanism engages the dwell portions, the rotatable table top is not rotated and, when the actuation mechanism engages the index portions, the table top is rotated a predetermined radial distance such as 90.degree., 180.degree. or some other amount.

  • Patent number: 5578023
Abstract: A flush-interval indicator for soluble, toilet bowl discardable pouches is disclosed for indicating to a user, once the pouch is discarded in a toilet bowl, when a sufficient flush-interval has elapsed so that, when the toilet is then flushed, the pouch will quickly disintegrate without obstructing or impeding the flow of water and waste material through the discharge lines of the system. The flush-interval indicator comprises optically-distinguishable indicia printed or otherwise affixed to a display surface of a pouch and normally concealed by a water-soluble opaque layer. The opaque layer may take the form of an external panel secured to the pouch, or a water-soluble layer of the pouch itself which includes pigment to render it opaque and shield the indicator from view. In an alternate construction, a water-soluble external cover is secured to the pouch and fibers from the cover are heat sealed into the pouch's display surface to form a flush indicator that is relatively unreadable when the cover is dry.
