  • Patent number: 6899245
Abstract: A container lid having a tamper evident and tamper resistant band formed of a plurality of equally spaced tabs having spurs that engage the rim of a container with latches formed on the spurs. In one embodiment the tamper evident band is unique because it hinges up instead of down and has a plurality of spurs with a stepped edge forming latches with the spurs engaging slots around the periphery of the lid. The reverse action makes the step edges on the spurs on the inside of tabs formed on the tamper resistant strip pull tighter when any attempt is made to pry or remove the lid from a container or cup. The lid also includes an annulus having interior surfaces that provide an excellent seal both inside and outside of the cup when the tamper resistant band is removed.

  • Patent number: 6865972
Abstract: An improved attenuator for damping vibrations and noise when disc brake rotors are being machined in a machining lathe. The improved attenuator has a handle comprised of a squared end with legs extending at angle of 100° to the squared end toward each other. Damping pads are mounted on the ends of the legs to press against the surfaces of the rotor being machined. The 100° angle of the legs toward each other improves the biasing force against the rotor surfaces. Additionally, the damping pads are provided with a notch that fits around and over the tips of cutting bits of the machining lathe to securely hold the pressure pads in place. Another improvement includes a fastening strap attached to the squared end of the handle that wraps around a biasing spring and the carriage on the machining lathe to securely hold and maintain the position of the attenuator.

  • Patent number: 6845382
Abstract: A system and method for identification and retrieval of lost pets such as dogs. The system includes methods to obtain accurate noseprints either by chemical transfer system or with closeup photography for entry into a database. The system assigns locations where noseprints are acquired with an account number which in turn automatically assign an identification number to a dog when registered. Data relating to and including the noseprint, a photograph, description, and information regarding the owner are transferred to a central database optionally from pet shops by E-Mail or by giving all photos and registration forms to a dog owner who then fills out forms and sends all materials to central office via mail. The system includes a program to automatically assign an account number to a pet shop or store and an identification number for the dog. The program includes photograph enhancing software as well as pattern recognition software to identify a lost dog via the noseprint.

  • Patent number: 6814569
Abstract: A safety mechanism in a utility lighter which includes a lever spring and cam mechanism having a fuel release lever and the safety button. When the cam mechanism is in the locked position, the lever spring blocks the stopper tab preventing depression of the trigger, and the fuel release lever closes the fuel release valve. As the safety button is depressed, the lever spring is moved out of alignment with the stopper tab to permit depression of the trigger, the hub rotates, and the fuel release lever is actuated to open the fuel-release valve. As the safety button is released, the lever spring urges the cam mechanism into the locked position.

  • Patent number: 6776042
Abstract: The present invention is a seismometer/velocimeter, and can be also made to function as an accelerometer. The invention comprises an in-plane suspension geometry combined with a transverse periodic-sensing-array position transducer. The invention can incorporate a feedback actuator of magnetic design, incorporating fixed magnets and planar coils on the surface of the proof mass allowing for much lower noise than an equivalent electrostatic actuator without requiring high voltages. The invention may also have a dual-axis configuration by using two sets of springs. The nested suspensions allow the proof mass to move in two orthogonal directions. A three-axis configuration is possible by combining the dual-axis version with sensing and actuation of the proof mass motion out of the plane. The position sensing for the out-of-plane motion can be made using schemes common in existing state-of-the-art sensors. Actuation for the sensors may be electrostatic or electromagnetic in each of the axis.

  • Patent number: 6771409
Abstract: An optical element capable of performing nonlinear frequency conversion and amplitude modulation simultaneously is disclosed. The optical element includes a monolithically integrated, electrode-coated dispersion nonlinear optical crystal section between two quasi-phase-matched (QPM) nonlinear optical crystal sections. By electrically controlling the relative phase among the mixing waves in the dispersion section, nonlinear frequency conversion and amplitude modulation can be performed simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 6737402
Abstract: The present invention provides for an improved method of preparing fetuin by using a chelating agent to remove inorganic ions, such as zinc, calcium, and barium, from fetuin. Then, reloading the “naked” fetuin with Zinc Acetate to form a product that is mainly Fetuin-Zinc. This improved method of preparing Fetuin-Zinc or supercharged zinc fetuin increases the effectiveness of inducing apoptosis in cancer cells by three to four times.

  • Patent number: 6720311
Abstract: This invention characterizes the specific peptide fragment derived from specially prepared zinc charged fetuin and a method of preparation thereof, wherein the fragment was found to contain an apoptosis-inducing activity. Specifically, the amino acid sequence of this peptide is H-T-F-S-G-V-A-S-V-E and correlates to amino acid no. 300-309 of fetuin, referred to herein as Fetuin Peptide Fragment (FPF 300-09). FPF 300-09 strongly induced apoptosis in LNCaP (prostate cancer) and HT-29 (colon cancer) cells without affecting CCD 18 Co (normal colon) cells. The in vitro tissue culture study demonstrated that the FPF 300-09 is more potent than the parent molecule (full-length zinc charged fetuin) in inducing apoptosis. FPF 300-09 has a LD50 of 0.3-0.4 &mgr;M, while the LD50 for zinc-charged fetuin is 3-10 &mgr;M.

  • Patent number: 6681026
Abstract: A structure of a rectangular transducer is provided. The structure includes a magnet assembly, a voice coil assembly and a positioning assembly. The magnet assembly has a pair of magnetic units with a gap therebetween for generating two magnetic fields having magnetic fluxes in opposite direction within the gap. The voice coil assembly includes a slab, a coil and a suspension unit, wherein the slab is used for being attached to a panel and the coil is immersed within the gap. The positioning assembly is used for supporting and positioning the magnet assembly and the voice coil assembly. When electric current flows through the coil, the voice coil assembly generates a motion in a direction vertical to the magnetic fluxes so as to excite the panel to generate flexural vibration and radiate sound.

  • Patent number: 6668460
Abstract: The present invention relates to a corrosion resistant lock blade knife with a blade made of titanium. The blade is mounted in the handle along with a locking arm made of a substance that is also corrosion resistant. During opening and closing the tang contact edge rubs against the locking arm head. At least one of these surfaces is composed of a corrosion-resistant non-metal or a corrosion-resistant soft metal substance to prevent the gripping and binding effects and excessive that would occur at the contact surface during opening and closing of the knife.

Abstract: A safety mechanism in a cigarette lighter that utilizes a multi-button system: a button and a button cover. The button has at least two elevations and is placed adjacent to the button cover. The button cover is coupled to one of the elevations of the button. A blocking element limits the downward movement of the button cover sufficiently to prevent activation of the piezo unit. To operate the lighter, the user must apply pressure to the button to operate release fuel and to operate the piezo unit to generate a spark.
