Abstract: Polyolefin substrates, for example polypropylene, polyethylene or thermoplastic olefin molded parts, are made scratch resistant by the incorporation therein of an additive combination of a maleated alpha-olefin functionalized with a long chain alcohol or long chain amine and a primary or secondary fatty acid amide. The present polyolefins exhibit good weatherability, scratch resistance, good processability, good mechanical strength, good gloss retention and are non-sticky. The functionalized maleated alpha-olefin is for example the ester or half ester of maleated C18-C26 alpha-olefin with tallow fatty alcohol. The fatty acid amide is for example oleyl palmitamide or stearyl erucamide.
Abstract: Sterically hindered N-hydrocarbyloxyamines are prepared from hindered amine N-oxyl compounds by a process which uses hydrogen peroxide or a hydrogen peroxide equivalent, a catalytic amount of a peroxide decomposing transition metal salt, metal oxide, or metal-ligand complex, a hydrocarbon solvent containing no activated hydrogen atoms, and a relatively inert cosolvent. Abstract: A method and an arrangement are provided for emptying a Big Bag or similar transport container which is filled with pourable, especially pulverized goods which are not to come into contact with their surroundings, wherein the Big Bag is inserted in a sluice means (2) which is closed off from the surroundings, with simultaneous sealing of the sluice means, which communicates with a processing container (3) for receiving the contents of the Big Bag, whereupon the Big Bag is cut open inside the sluice means by a cutting means (6) provided therein. Abstract: The instant invention pertains to polymeric alkoxyamines, which are prepared by atom transfer radical addition polymerization (ATRA). Further aspects of the invention are a process for their preparation and their use as light stabilizers, flame retardants and polymerization regulators/initiators in controlled radical polymerization processes. Yet another aspect of the invention are novel monomeric intermediate alkoxyamines, which are also useful as polymerization regulators/initiators.

Abstract: Disclosed are natural products composites protected against the deleterious effects of microorganisms comprising at least one natural product, at least one thermoplastic resin, and an effective amount of an antifungal agent. The composites are further advantageously protected against weathering and color formation by the incorporation therein of at least one light stabilizer and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the oxides, hydroxides or silicates of Ca, Mg, Al and Zn. The light stabilizers are selected from the group consisting of the ultraviolet light absorbers and the sterically hindered amines. The metal oxide is for example CaO. The natural products are for example wood flour, flax, hemp, jute, kenaf, or rice husk. The thermoplastic resin is for example polyethylene or polypropylene. The antifungal agent and potential coadditives are incorporated via melt processing such as extrusion, co-kneading, pultrusion and injection molding.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition and process for enhancing the controlled radical polymerization in the presence of nitroxyls and nitroxylethers by adding a chain transfer agent selected from the group consisting of mercaptanes, thioethers and disulfides to the polymerizable mixture. A further subject of the invention is the use of mercaptanes, thioethers and disulfides for increasing rate and yield of controlled radical polymerizations in the presence of a nitroxyl or a nitroxylether.
Abstract: Organic polymeric substrates, for example polyolefins such as polypropylene, can be made flame retardant by the incorporation of a synergistic mixture of (i) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the (a) sterically hindered nitroxyl stabilizers, (b) sterically hindered hydroxylamine stabilizers and (c) sterically hindered alkoxyamine stabilizers and (ii) at least one phosphazene flame retardant. Advantageously, a further flame retardant may be added, without the need of adding an antimony synergist. The compositions of the invention combine good flame retardant properties with light stability and good mechanical properties.
Abstract: The present invention is aimed at a method of providing wettability to polyester fibers or filaments, to woven or nonwoven fabrics made therefrom and to resultant articles of manufacture. The method comprises melt extruding a mixture comprising a polyester and one or more alkyl metal sulfonates where the metal is Na, Li or K and the alkyl is straight or branched chain alkyl of 12 to 15 carbon atoms, or is straight or branched chain alkenyl of 12 to 18 carbon atoms. The alkyl metal sulfonates are present from about 2% to about 5% by weight based on the weight of the polyester. A post treatment step such as an alkaline treatment step is not included. The melt extrusion mixtures do not include certain additives such as polyoxyalkylene compounds, alkylmonoethonolamide compounds, alkyldiethanolamine compounds and polyetheramide compounds.
