  • Patent number: 5159181
Abstract: A reader of a code represented by a coded array mounted on a surface and sisting of a material differing in its electrical conductivity from its surroundings comprises a pair of electrodes supported in a body movable across the surface. The pair of electrodes can be capacitively coupled, without contact, with spaced coupling sites forming part of the array. The electrodes carried by the reader body form the free ends of an open electrical circuit which has a voltage source and a detector in series. The voltage source is a signal generator applying a steady-state AC to the electrodes. The reader is movable relative and parallel to the coded surface with at least one of its electrodes above the coupling sites, the AC frequency being so selected in relation to the rate of motion that for each capacitive coupling, the measurement takes place in steady-state.

  • Patent number: 5158277
Abstract: A conveying method permits conveying of printed products, particularly in the form of a scale flow, with a constant or variable speed over conveying distances of random length, which can also contain rising or falling portions in the conveying direction, as well as curves. The method is based on the fact that each individual printed product or small group of printed products is conveyed by a conveying a element over a step length (S) which is small compared with the entire conveying distance and is then taken over by the next conveying element, while the first conveying element is moved back to its starting point. This process is repeated in a time cycle with the cycle length (T). The corresponding apparatus comprises a fixed support and a plurality of conveying elements, which are driven in a timed manner. A conveying distance or section can comprise a plurality of conveying modules, no transfer units being required between the individual modules.

  • Patent number: 5154279
Abstract: In a scale flow, particularly in a dense scale flow (S4) of flat articles such as printed products, the thickness of each individual element between a deflectable measurement part and a reference part is measured. The reference part in a timed movement for each measurement engages below that part of the scale which forms the surface of the scale flow. The reference part is constructed as an impeller (22), which is positioned laterally of the scale flow (S4) in such a way that its vanes 22.1-22.4, if the impeller (22) is rotated about its spindle (23), are moved between the scale located on the surface and the remainder of the scale flow. The deflectable measurement part is constructed as a sensing roll (21), which is pressed into an adjustable neutral position by spring tension. The deflection of the sensing roll (21) is measured and interrogated in timing manner.

  • Patent number: 5110086
Abstract: An improved irrigation valve has a valve housing with a tubular passage and an inlet opening in one side. The valve housing can be attached to an opening in an irrigation pipe so that water from the pipe can flow into the housing and through the inlet opening. A tubular valve in the tubular passage has a flow opening in its wall and an open outlet end, the valve member being rotatable in the passage to align the flow opening with the inlet opening to different degrees to control the flow of water through the valve from the pipe to the outlet. A baffle extends along an inside wall of the valve member to interfere with circular flow of water within said valve member to thereby reduce a fan effect at the outlet which such circular flow causes, the fan being a cause of erosion of the irrigated soil. Annular and axial ribs between the valve member and tubular passage reduce the ingress of dirt to reduce maintenance of the valve.

  • Patent number: 5106068
Abstract: The further processing and conveying of printed products with a high capacity takes place in such a way that the printed products are organized into clusters (2, 2'). A printed product cluster is a group of at least two individual printed products, which are jointly processed in cluster flows at least over a partial segment or process. Such a cluster flow can be split up or reduced to a lower order cluster flow (decreasing number of printing products per cluster). It is also possible to mix or combine cluster flows. This makes it possible within an overall system to create an upwardly open processing capacity at the desired points or stations. The method simultaneously permits increased flexibility by specific buffering possibilities, redundancy, etc., with a relatively low material and cost expenditure.
