  • Patent number: 4952498
Abstract: Gas-generating activity of microorganisms is detected by providing a vessel in which the microorganisms are incubated, the vessel having a cap with a membrane indicator therein. The membrane has a deformed region which is inflated to indicate the existence of an increase in pressure within the vessel as compared with ambient pressure. Visual or automatic monitoring of the inflated portion is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4946161
Abstract: The training apparatus is used for the planned strengthening of individual muscle groups. It preferably has two spring bodies, each having a terminal gripping element. The gripping elements of one spring body are terminally arranged on one bar-like spring element and the terminal gripping element of a second spring body on a bar-like spring element can be inserted in the gripping element of the first spring body. Thus, the apparatus can either be tensile stressed and/or compression stressed.

  • Patent number: 4941798
Abstract: The inventive manipulator for heavy loads, preferably printing products in loose scale formation and wound up to form rolls, only has a single pivot pin (35) or joint which, according to the invention, is arranged in such a way that the load (5) can be brought into three main positions orthogonal to one another using this single pivot pin or joint. The load is held by a holding device (33,38). The pivot pin (35) passes through the center of gravity of the load, or the center of gravity is located in the pivot point or fulcrum. This makes it possible to grip in frontal or lateral precise manner heavy loads and subsequently to deposit same on a loading device or in a store without great force expenditure using a drive and/or manually. The invention is also characterized by the combination of an industrial truck (10), a lifting device (11) arranged thereon and a mounted implement (31-38) located on the truck and preferably constituted by the inventive manipulator.

  • Patent number: 4941680
Abstract: For commercial and special vehicles, such as e.g. weapon transporters, mobile radar stations, mobile satellite control stations and mobile cranes, which must carry very considerable weight, very robust chassis are required. The inventive chassis (1) has a so-called box-frame construction. It comprises a lower and an upper carrier plate (2, 3), which are reinforced and joined by reinforcing elements (12) located between them. This construction leads to an enormous load bearing capacity and extremely high rigidity against twisting or torsion in the case of a reduced height of chassis (1). Unlike the case of conventional chassis constructions with an overall height of 30-40 cm, minimum heights of approximately 10 cm are possible here. Through covering the outer faces of the chassis with vertical cover plates, an additional reinforcement is obtained. These measures permit a configuration which, even when using large wheels, makes it possible to mount the chassis at a very low level.

  • Patent number: 4937966
Abstract: A bait-retaining fishhook includes a metal fishhook having an elongated, curved body with a line-retaining eye at one end and a point at the other end and a bait retaining member attached thereto. The bait retainer is an elongated piece of flexible thermoplastic material such as monofilament fishing line attached at one end to the body of the hook adjacent the point, the other end of the line extending away from said body portion. When bait is placed on the fishhook, and particularly when force is applied to pull the bait from the hook, the bait retaining member is separated from the body portion and inhibits removal of the bait from the hook. The assembly is made by heating the hook above the softening point of the line and touching an end of the line to the heated hook, thereby melting the end of the line onto the hook body, forming a secure connection.

  • Patent number: 4934616
Abstract: The breaking tongs with a tong body (7) for receiving two tong parts (1, 1'), each pivotable about its own rotation center (2, 2'), and spaced from the rotation center the tongs are subdivided into a tong lever (3, 3') for the force action and a cutting lever (4, 4') for exerting the breaking force. The tong protuberances (12, 61, 63) are detachably mounted on the cutting levers. In the vicinity of the tong cutting edge (4, 4') separating blades (6, 6') can be provided for cutting reinforcements. The detachable tong protuberances (61, 63) can be detachably fixed in a protuberance bed (60), which is detachably arranged or shaped on to the cutting lever (4, 4'). A plurality of tong protuberances can form a working profile, which differs as regards the breaking action from another working profile formed from the same or a different number of tong protuberances.

  • Patent number: 4921035
Abstract: A process for compacting powdery materials is initiated by a pressure surge in which a surge G.sub.1 acts at a time t.sub.1 on the surface of the powdery material and, at the same time, a surge G.sub.2 is applied at a time t.sub.2 to a region of the material at a distance from the surface in the direction of the pattern so that friction between the sides of the mold housing and the compacting material is reduced. The time relationship is such that the air introduced into the material by surge G.sub.2 has time to escape before the surge G.sub.1 reaches the pattern plate. For this purpose, openings 9 are provided in the pattern plate between the mold box wall 3 and pattern 2. These openings can be arranged around the marginal areas of the pattern plate and can vary in size and number depending upon the distance between the wall 3 and pattern 2 or on the shape of the pattern. The openings can be vented to the atmosphere or connected to a suction source.

  • Patent number: 4916437
Abstract: A gas monitoring system for a kitchen environment in a house and the like which is supplied with gas from a pressurized gas container or from a public gas supply to sense a possibly occurring gas leak. The system comprises a valve controlling the flow of gas from the container to a cooking range. Leaked gas is detected by a sensor which activates a visual and an audible alarm circuit and which operates a valve to terminate gas flow. The electronic alarm circuit is an integrated circuit, so that it can be located in a small hermetically sealed container, together with the power supply. The alarms stay on even after the gas leaked has been removed, until the system is reset by a manual switch. A manual override is provided to allow gas flow in the event of power failure or system failure in areas where service may be delayed.

  • Patent number: 4909041
Abstract: A residential HVAC system includes a heat pump having a compressor arranged to heat a domestic hot water vessel and to heat or cool a storage vessel which is connected to a heat exchanger within the residence. Temperature sensors are provided at critical locations throughout the system and current and voltage sensors are coupled to the power lines feeding the residence. A microprocessor controls the operation of the compressor and other components of the heat pump system in response to measured tempertures, in response to the level of energy supplied to the residence and in response to the existence of on- or off-peak time intervals to operate the compressor and/or resistive heating elements to condition the hot water and storage vessels for subsequent use and to control an interior fan to condition the space. Operation of the compressor is controlled during on-peak intervals as a function of the resident's life style as reflected in power usage and requested comfort level.

  • Patent number: 4901344
Abstract: 8 kHz ASK signals are produced by an electronic business set instrument to function as control or feature signals. To avoid the problems of transmitting the 8 kHz ASK over voiceband telephone lines over long distance, the least significant bit (LSB) of each 8 bit word representative of voice signals is caused to be at a predetermined level (e.g., low) when an ASK signal is present and at the other level (e.g., high) when there is no ASK. At the receiving end, the state of the bit is used to regenerate the 8 kHz. Detection of the ASK is performed by a high-pass filter.

  • Patent number: 4898357
Abstract: A support structure for an electrical box includes an elongated support member which is fastened into a hole in the rear wall of the box, the depth of insertion being determined by a stop flange. The length of the support member can be adjusted to approximately match the distance between the rear wall of the box and the inner surface of a sheet of wall material behind the rear wall by breaking off portions of the support member at one of a plurality of weakened regions formed by a uniform sequence of annular recesses. The support, thus installed, limits motion of the unmounted end of the box.
