  • Patent number: 5187344
Abstract: A halogenated organic compound is introduced into a plasma. In the plasma state, substances are very reactive and chemical substances which are not readily decomposed such as halogenated organic compounds are decomposed in a short time. Specifically, in a high-temperature plasma exceeding 10,000.degree. C., almost all molecules are considered to dissociate into atoms. A reactive substance such as water is introduced into a plasma together with a halogenated organic compound. The decomposed halogenated organic compound is caused to react with the reactive substance, for preventing the decomposed organic compound from returning to its original state.

  • Patent number: 5184951
Abstract: An apparatus having an incineration chamber and at least one burner for oxidizing fumes is provided. First and second regenerators are in fluid communication with the incineration chamber, as is a bypass which introduces unburnt fumes to the incineration chamber without passing them through either of the regenerators. While the fumes are in the bypass, a purging device, including a purge fan and accompanying conduits and valves, introduces a purge gas to either one of the regenerators to force unburnt fumes therefrom. The purged fumes and the purge gas are mixed with the incoming fumes from the bypass in an annular plenum downstream of the purged regenerator before they are introduced to the incineration chamber for oxidation. The flow of incoming fumes to the system may be continuous, even during purging, and the purge fan may also be continuously operated.

  • Patent number: 5185530
Abstract: A condenser means for focusing an electron beam onto a specimen and a scanning means for scanning the beam in two dimensions on the specimen placed inside a specimen chamber are disposed inside an electron beam column. The top portion of the specimem chamber is connected with the column by an annular member of a high magnetic permeability which surrounds the column. Magnetic flux passed through the top wall of the chamber is made to penetrate the annular member of a high magnetic permeability. The flux is then caused to enter the portion of the upper wall remote from the column, after which the flux leaks out. Thus, leakage of the magnetic flux into the specimem chamber is prevented.

  • Patent number: 5182454
Abstract: A scanning electron microscope capable of producing an accurate topographical image of a specimen surface irrespective of the elements of the specimen or if the dosage of electron beam varies. The instrument has two detectors arranged in such a way as to detect electron beams reflected from the specimen in two directions which are arranged symmetrically with respect to the normal line to the specimen surface. A subtractor circuit produces the difference between the output signals from the detectors. An adder circuit produces the sum of the output signals from the detectors. A corrective circuit divides the output signal from the subtractor circuit by the output signal from the adder circuit. The output signal from the corrective circuit is integrated by an integrator.

  • Patent number: 5179974
Abstract: A valve open-close indicating apparatus comprises a cylindrical housing having two opposite ends in the axial direction thereof, a sleeve arranged in the housing for axial reciprocation between the opposite ends of the housing, and a cylindrical elastic member for urging the sleeve from both outer sides with respect to the axial direction so that the sleeve is normally situated in an intermediate position between the opposite ends. When a piston moves toward one end of the housing to open a valve, the sleeve is pressed toward the one end against the urging force of the cylindrical elastic member, and the indicating apparatus indicates "open." When the piston moves toward the other end to close the valve, the sleeve is pressed toward the other end against the urging force, and the indicating apparatus indicates "closed.

  • Patent number: 5180300
Abstract: A regenerative burner having heat storage units with combustion effluent/combustion air ducts therethrough, fuel intake means and a burner body, wherein the burner is designed to suppress NOx formation and to control flame shape and characteristic in the regenerative system during combustion. The regenerative burner may include a burner baffle, or may include a plurality of gas jets entrained in generally converging fashion for control of the flame characteristics and shape dispositive of NOx formation. The burner may provide for staged combustion, either by means of sequential fuel injection or sequential provision of combustion air, or the burner may depress NOx formation by vitiation of combustion air with products of combustion. • Patent number: 5178406
Abstract: A vehicle suspension system has an anti-roll portion bar arrangement comprising a torsion bar extending transversely of the vehicle, and first and second arms extending transversely from the torsion bar, one arm being connected to the torsion bar by a rotary actuator for moving the arm angularly about the torsion bar. The torsion bar is supported for angular movement about its torsional axis by a support member, for example, a tubular housing which is mounted to the vehicle structure by brackets which preferably extend lengthwise of the vehicle, forwardly or rearwardly, from the support member to be pivotally connected to the vehicle structure. As well as providing packaging benefits, the arrangement has the effect that the support member stores some energy in the system, lessening the demands on the properties of the torsion bar.
