Abstract: A cover system for an automobile includes a flexible cover, preferably of nylon, having leading, trailing and side edge portions and of a suitable dimension to fit over the entire car body from the rear bumper to the front bumper and sides thereof. The flexible cover includes an elastic leader segment attached at a first end to the cover and spaced from the trailing edge thereof. A second end of the leader segment is attached to a rotatable spool housed in a containment tube. The spool is rotated for storing in the cover by a motor, by a spring-biased shaft arrangement or by a manually turnable crank, or combinations thereof. The containment tube may be pivotally mounted by straps within the interior of the trunk for storage therein and is adapted to be pivotally swung outwardly from the trunk to an operable position at the rear of the trunk lid. After the cover is applied to the automobile, the containment tube is swung back to the trunk compartment for safe storage.
Abstract: A method and device for injecting liquid substances such as brine or paste into a piece of meat. During injection, the piece of meat, which is conveyed over a row of spray nozzles, is held in contact with a row of the nozzles, preferably by means of a pressure roller. The rotational shaft of the roller is situated opposite the row of spray nozzles. This allows for deforming the meat to a slab of predetermined thickness and prevents the injection stream from being atomized prematurely, that is, outside the meat. This results in a homogeneous distribution of the brining liquid in the meat.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for drying lengths of carrier material which have been printed with ink comprising an evaporable solvent. To maintain the concentration of the solvents evaporating from the printing ink, this concentration has to be determined. As known apparatuses for measuring the concentration are expensive, prone to faults and need regular calibration, the present invention provides a method for calculating that concentration. According to said method the concentration of the evaporated solvents in the gas mixture is determined by measurement of the temperature and flow rate of a mixture to be supplied to the burner, and by measurement of the temperature of the gas mixture heated by the burner and by measurement of the flow rate of the fuel supplied to the burner.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a train positioner for moving one or more railroad cars of a unit train are disclosed. The positioner is engaged with the train while the positioner is stopped at an initial location. The positioner is moved and the train is accelerated to a constant speed. The energy expended by the positioner in accelerating the train to the constant speed is determined and apparent mass of the train is calculated from this energy. From the apparent mass of the train, a maximum force to which the positioner should be subjected, and a deceleration rate, a deceleration point adequate to stop the train by a predetermined, final location is calculated. The positioner is decelerated beginning at the deceleration point and at the deceleration rate until the train is stopped by a final location. In a preferred embodiment, the deceleration rate is also calculated from the apparent mass of the train and the maximum force to which the positioner should be subjected.
Abstract: A method of pretreating and hot-dip coating aluminum or aluminum alloys on a chromium-containing steel strip to provide an improved coating comprising annealing final gauge steel strip in an oxygen excess atmosphere to produce a chromium-rich oxide on the surface and thereafter electrolytically descaling the strip in an aqueous salt solution to remove the oxide and to expose a chromium depleted surface of the strip. The strip is then transported to a coating line where it is heated to a temperature at or above the temperature of a bath of aluminum or aluminum alloy. A substantially hydrogen atmosphere is maintained over the bath while the dew point is maintained below minus 35.degree. C. The strip is then drawn through the bath to coat the strip.
Abstract: A piston for a door closer comprises metal cups on opposite ends of a stem. A plastics ring is a snap-fit in one of the cups and protrudes from that cup to seal against the wall of a cylinder. A groove in the side wall of the cup for receiving a rib on the ring is formed by pressing a substantially flat blank before the blank is formed into the cup.

A releasing material such as sand is dispensed by a rotating roller which intermittently forms a dispensing slit so that the releasing material is only applied to the mould bottom.
Abstract: A hinge for use with a fire door has a blade in which there are formed a number of screw holes and a larger opening. The larger opening is filled with an intumescent material.
Abstract: An acoustical ceiling roof panel assembly including a plurality of roof deck panels assembled in side-by-side relationship and secured to roof supports with each panel including a plurality of parallel and spaced apart perforated flat sections. Each flat section is separated from its adjacent flat section by a rib section, and has a width at least three times and preferably five times greater than the width of the rib section as measured in the plane of the flat section. Lengths of insulation are positioned between adjacent ribs so as to substantially fill the space formed by the adjacent ribs and the flat section. A wire mesh spacer is positioned within the space between each perforated flat section and the insulation to maintain the insulation in spaced relationship to the flat section.
Abstract: A shrouded rabble includes a blade having an active face and a backface with a shroud extending from the backface along a lower edge of the blade. The rabble is suspended above a perforated hearth for urging charge materials on the hearth from one location to another in response to relative rotation between the hearth and the rabble. The action of the rabble on the charge materials causes breakdown of the charge materials and accumulation of fines on the perforated hearth. The shroud defines a shroud chamber behind the blade and screens charge materials from the shroud chamber to expose accumulated fines on the perforated hearth. The charge fines thus become fluidized in an upflowing heating gas and exit the shroud chamber through at least one opening in the shroud, facilitating the flow of heating gas through the perforated hearth and into the charge materials. The opening may simply comprise one end of the shroud being open, or it may include a plurality of holes in the shroud itself.
Abstract: The spacing between the probe tip of a scanning tunneling microscope and a sample is maintained constant. A bias voltage circuit produces a bias voltage that is swept across zero volts. Voltages corresponding to the resulting tunneling currents are detected in synchronism with the sweep of the bias voltage applied to the sample. A control unit takes in the output voltage from a curent-to-voltage converter circuit while the bias voltage is being swept. At this time, an error-correcting means accepts the voltage which is detected when the bias voltage is zero volts. This voltage is taken as an error voltage. After the completion of the collection of data, the error-correcting means subtracts the error voltage from all the collected data to correct the data. Where the bias voltage is swept not across zero volts, the voltage which would be detected when the bias voltage was zero volts is calculated by interpolation or extrapolation. The calculated voltage is taken as an error voltage.
Abstract: Directly compressible, wax-containing granules having improved flow properties are obtained when waxes are admixed in the melt with certain flow improving additives, followed by cooling and granulation of the admixture. In certain embodiments of the invention, only the wax itself melts in the melt combination of the wax(es) and additives(s), and in other cases both the wax(es) and the additives(s) will both melt. In either case, the melt combination of the wax(es) with the additive(s) yields, upon cooling and granulation, a wax-containing particulate drug diluent having improved and unexpected flow properties.

Abstract: A valve operating mechanism produces a rotating force for causing a valve body of the valve to shift relative to a valve seat thereof, so that the valve is opened and closed. A piston of the mechanism produces a rectilinear reciprocating force. A screw member is supported moveably along the rectilinear line and unrotatably in the housing and includes a pair of pawls helically projecting along the rectilinear line and a helical interval space defined between the helical pawls. A pivot is inserted into the helical interval space. A cylindrical rotating member is supported rotatably and unmoveably along the rectilinear line in the housing so as to surround the screw member. When the screw member receives the rectilinear reciprocating force to perform the reciprocating motion along the rectilinear line, the pivot is urged to rotate along the helical interval space in the rectilinearly unmoved state, and the cylindrical rotating member can rotate with the pivot.

Abstract: A rotary gas treating apparatus has a front-stage rotor and a rear-stage rotor each consisting essentially of an adsorbent material and allowing gas flow along a rotational axis. These rotors have, within respective rotational areas thereof, adsorbing areas for introducing a treatment-object gas and desorbing areas for introducing a recycling gas. The adsorbing area of the front-stage rotor and the adsorbing area of the rear-stage rotor are disposed in the mentioned order in a continuous treatment-object gas flow passage from an upstream side thereof. The desorbing area of the front-stage rotor and the desorbing area of the rear-stage rotor are disposed in recycling gas flow passages, respectively. With the invention, a revolving direction of the front-stage rotor and a revolving direction of the rear-stage rotor are reverse to each other. Further, the adsorbing material of the front-stage rotor has a greater average pore diameter than that forming the rear-stage rotor.
